Favorite Dirty Harry movie
1.Magnum Force-same gritty 70s feel like the original. Great supporting cast Matheson, Soul, Urich. Interesting foe being even more extreme vigilantism. Good action lethality.
2. Dirty Harry-slick soundtrack.
3.The Enforcer
4.Sudden Impact
Have not seen Dead Pool.

Re: Favorite Dirty Harry movie
i remember liking "The Enforcer" a lot bc of the bazooka scene, but i have to see all these again and plan to do so sometime in the near future to make a better opinion.

You can't beat the original. So much going on in that movie that flies way over the head of the average filmgoer. I've actually studied it in film class.

Magnum Force is my favorite over the original by about a hair.
Recently saw The Enforcer for the first time when I picked up the new box set. It was better than I thought it would be--Aside from the (Quite listless) action climax.

DIRTY HARRY (1971) is a masterpiece, one of the greatest urban crime thrillers ever produced by Hollywood, and one of the best works by one of Hollywood's most gifted action filmmakers, Don Siegel (INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS).
MAGNUM FORCE (1973) is a competent police thriller, more interesting for its ideas about the law and its boundaries--or lack thereof--by virtue of an excellent script co-written by John Milius, than for its rather anonymous direction (Ted Post). Good cast, too.
THE ENFORCER (1976) is basically a glorified B-film, entertaining, full of action, but trashy and contrived. (Not as bad as THE GAUNTLET, though.)
SUDDEN IMPACT (1984) is not really a Dirty Harry movie but a Sondra Locke movie, typical of that period when Eastwood's movies with her--and there were so many of them--were barely watchable (see--or better yet, don't!--THE GAUNTLET). Nobody but Eastwood ever thought Locke was star material. Kind of like Herbert Yates who kept saddling John Wayne with his Czech ice-skating "discovery," Vera Hruba Ralston (look them up) or, a generation later, Peter Bogdanovich and Cybill Shepherd. (Cybill later proved she was star material--at least on TV--but Bogdanovich never recovered.) Best thing Eastwood ever did for his career was to dump Locke.
THE DEAD POOL (1988) - an idiotic movie from start to finish. Cop films were expanding into new directions at this time (LETHAL WEAPON, DIE HARD, ROBOCOP), so why did Eastwood take two steps backward? Easy payday?

1) Dirty Harry
2) The Enforcer - 2 & 3 may change places depending on my mood.
3) Magnum Force
4) Sudden Impact
5) The Dead Pool - Not even close to the other 4.
As for the catchphrases:
1) "Go ahead, make my day."
2) "A man's got to know his limitations."
3) "You've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?"
4) "You're shit outa luck."
5) "Marvelous." - They didn't even try with this one.

Dirty Harry, but I'll give some love to the Dead Pool as a close second. I remember as a teen going to see Dead Pool 5 times at the theater!

Re: Favorite Dirty Harry movie
I think Dirty Harry is the best no questions asked.
Like others, I kind of flip flop between 2 and 3. Magnum Force definitely has ambition, but something about it doesn't work for me. I haven't watched it in a while, but I remember feeling like they were trying too hard to justify Harry's character in light of the criticism the first movie received, but in the end they make him seem even more unsympathetic and fascist. In the first movie Harry lives by the "code" that doing what's right is more important than following the rules, but in the second, that "code" gets ammended to say that doing what's right is more important than following the rules, but only if you stay within MY rules.
The Enforcer, on the other hand, really has no ambition other than to be an entertaining movie. It's almost cartoonish at times, but I love it. The scene in the oral exam room in the beginning is funnier to me than most comedies. It may not be art, but it's fun.
I haven't watched Sudden Impact in years, but it's just a little too dark and has a little too much Sondra Locke. It's a shame that this was the only one Eastwood directed and that it came during "the Locke years".
The Dead Pool is terrible. I've only seen it once, and the most entertaing thing about it was spotting the GN'R cameo.

I always liked Sudden Impact more than the other, and I can't explain why. It was just a fun, shoot-em-up cop story.

Dirty Harry, easily. Andy Robinson is awesome and it's a great film.
Magnum Force is a close second. Very tight film.
The Enforcer is pretty good, but has it's weak spots.
Sudden Impact is ok.
Dead Pool is bad.

Dirty Harry, it's not an action movie, it's a character study.
Magnum Force, very good and a sequel that actually does something different than the original.
Sudden Impact, personally, I liked the fact that even Harry's sense of right and wrong were pushed to the limit here.
The Enforcer, a buddy-cop movie before they were big in the 80s. Too inconsistent, but entertaining.
Dead Pool, a horrible conclusion to the series. Worth watching once, if just for the opening robbery.

1. Dirty Harry (A+)- Still a classic.
2. Magnum Force (B+)- Very good sequel.
3. The Enforcer (C)- OK sequel, but nothing special.
4. Sudden Impact (F) - Awful, the movie just slogs along. Atleast it had the classic line 'Go ahead, make my day!'
5. Dead Pool (D) - Better then Sudden Impact, but a typical 80's action movie as Dirty Harry had jumped the shark at this point.
