The premise doesn't really grab me but I will wait and see a trailer.

But then again it is a Scorsese picture so I'm sure it will be good.

Cool. I picture this one with art direction similar to Scorsese's Cape Fear remake. But it's always hard to say where Scorsese will go. Regardless, it's always a necessity to see his movies in the theater.

The news of reshoots for Shutter Island doesn't bode well & Lehane's novels have so far had an extraordinary success rate on the big screen with one great adaptation (Mystic River) & one very good one (Gone Baby Gone). So it wouldn't be entirely surprising if this was the film that broke the spell. Still, I'll cross my fingers & hope that if nothing else Shutter Island at least proves a notch above the awful rubbish Scorsese has been torturing audiences with over the last decade.

It's Scorsese...I can't really say that the man has made a bad film yet. So I still believe in it. Plus it's under WB no? Doesn't seem like WB would fuck him over...

Wow, if that's what passes for awful rubbish these days the movie industry must actually be doing something right for once.

Reshoots are common and your bias is obvious. Stop being silly.

Reshoots happen for a reason, Donna. If the movie worked as originally intended there wouldn't be any need for reshoots. And my 'bias' - such as it is - is against mediocre movies. Since 'Marty' has made a run of those one naturally hopes that this won't be another.

Some things work on the page and don't work in a film, or work by themselves and don't work as part of the whole. Filmmaking is complex, Sid. Reshoots are a part of that, for the best and worst filmmakers out there.

re: Shutter Island (Scorsese, 2010): DiCaprio, Ruffalo, Kingsley, Von Sydow

Sure, his best work is well behind him, but that's not to say the man can't still make a really good (even great) film. His recent films are all very solid; they're not as good as Taxi Driver/Raging Bull/Goodfellas, but really, what is? He's far beyond any of the American filmmakers of his generation; how often do we get excited about a new Coppola film? Ridley Scott and Steven Spielberg are some of the only ones who still have a steady output of, and I'd say they're more hit and miss than Scorsese.

Also, movies are about as far form a "working as originally intended" medium as you can get. Everything from script re-writes, changing actors/roles, different edits, multiple takes, different audio mixes, different score use, et al, is pretty common with a lot of Hollywood production. Stanley Kubrick doing 50+ takes of a simple scene didn't make him a hack now, did it?

Sure, reshoots can mean a movie is damaged to the point where it's necessary to add something in order to make it "watchable," but it can also be the equivalent of touching up a few takes in order to make a scene better, albeit while in post-production rather than on-set.

Of course reshoots happen for a reason. That doesn't mean it's a bad reason, though. Reshoots are done to better a picture. What works on a page doesn't always work on set, and what works on set doesn't always work on film. That's what reshoots are for, to make the final film the best it can be.

Not single film has ever been made that ended up exactly as the filmmakers initially envisioned. Films aren't formed until the final cut (and lately, even after).

Scorsese has been churning out anonymous, albeit well-crafted, studio product for almost two decades now. Of course it's better than most other mainstream commercial fare, but it certainly can't hold a candle to his deeply personal, risk-taking work of the 1970's. Silence looks like more of a return to that kind of material than Shutter Island, but I'm sure this will still end up being one of the better Hollywood films of the year.

Sid, whenever DOne starts acting like this, go search for his/her posts in the Rock Band thread. Pure gold.

re: Shutter Island (Scorsese, 2010): DiCaprio, Ruffalo, Kingsley, Von Sydow

I may sum up what others have said but....Scorsese is probably the best American director we have. I can see where others may not like Aviator, Gangs of New York, The Departed and other recent fare of his but they're still damn good (Gangs could've been amazing but was still good). Taxi Driver and Raging Bull are without a doubt cinematic greatness it's hard to be that DAMN GOOD. I mean..Coppola hasn't been hot since Apocalypse Now, Spielberg is a great guy but he's become spotty. Sometimes a director wants to tell a good story with no reason to make it a personal one of sorts. There's nothing wrong with that. I'm totally happy for any new Scorsese film cuz he's always good. The man very rarely churns out something we'd call shit.

Out of everyone in the almost flawless cast, I am most looking forward to watching Max von Sydow.

I'm confused. Did I say something bad about Rock Band? I honestly don't recall, can you link?

DiCaprio always has movies come out around my birthday (Oct. 14th). This one is about 2 weeks early, so I think the date will be pushed back a bit.

Anyway, I don't want to get my hopes up. The casting agent has already done their job to secure my money, hopefully Marty doesn't screw it up.

The book was great, but the ending was a disappointment, IMO.

You're defending someone who called Scorsese's work of the last decade "awful rubbish"?

Dude...

The book was quite good until the ending came along. I'm sure the movie will be the same way; great build-up, horrible climax. I even returned the book to Barnes & Noble afterward because I hated the ending so much.
