Books set in Italy/Slovenia/Austria
My wife and I are taking a trip to Europe this summer and hitting up the following areas:
- Ljubljana, Bled, and Bohinj in Slovenia
- Salzburg, Kehlsteinhaus (The Eagles Nest), Berchtesgaden in Austria/Germany
- Lake Como (Bellagio), Sorrento/Amalfi Coast/Capri, Tuscany, and Cinque Terre Italy
I recently read Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon and I loved it, really had me wanting to go back to Barcelona (and almost did for this trip). I also read Pillars of the Earth and World Without End by Ken Follett and really liked them, and they give a cool picture of Mideavil Europe in general, if not the specific areas we'll be going to.
I would love some good recommendations on anything similar that maybe takes place in any of the areas we are going to, as I think it is fun to read novels (or movies too) that are based in an area you are going as they give you a fun perspective when you go there and sometimes a different feel or even good suggestions for things to do/places to go that you don't get from guidebooks and travel research on the area.

I'm reading "Man on Fire" by A.J. Quinnell. It's the novel the Denzel Washington movie was based on. It is set in Italy and is about a cold hearted bodyguard that learns to feel again when he is hired to protect a young girl. She gets kidnapped and he becomes a man on fire to find her and bring justice to bear. Good stuff. I don't know if it would have what you are looking for as far as the locations and the descriptions, as I;m only 100 pages in so far, but its a suggestion. Have you a good trip!

My favorite Italian-flavored book:
Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose. Not so much for good places to visit in Italy, but just to give a good idea of a very infamous time in its history.

The White War by Mark Thompson. Its about WWI between Italy and the Austro-Hungarian empire. Its all about the Austrians, Italians, Slovenes, Croats, Germans and how the modern day area resulted from that war. It also gives a real insight into the performance of the Italian soldier in WWII. Very good book about an area of WWI that is almost unknown in the west.
