DVD Talk review of 'Brokeback Mountain' (Blu-ray)

I read Stuart Galbraith IV's DVD review of Brokeback Mountain at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=36636 and...

Stuart, I must say your 2.5/5.0 picture quality rating surprised me. I thought the image was extremely sharp and clear. One of the best in fact.

I was very surprised, too. Individual shots exhibit fine detail (the texture of jackets, the convincing CGI sheep) but overall it seemed awfully soft compared with, as I state in the review, similar titles I've looked at recently such as LONESOME DOVE and BROKEN TRAIL. The review of the HD DVD was similarly positive.

Based on your comments I'll take another look at 5 or 10 minutes of the film just to reconfirm that opinion.

Wow! See, I didn't even know any CGI was involved in the film. But the landscape shots were like 3D postcards. Really amazing.

My understanding they supplemented live sheep with CGI additions, CGI'd the skies on some shots, and finally the hailstorm and lighting.

I hope the image is good, because it's those great landscapes and skies that are luring me to get this Blu-ray version.

Now I'm on the fence about it.

Nick, rent it first from Blockbuster or Netflix. But I highly recommend the purchase. Take a look:

I'll most definitely do that. I really enjoyed this film and its look just demands to be seen in high definition.

Nick, I'm a stubborn SOB when it comes to BD PQ. But I found this one to be absolutely stunning. Especially the scenery shots. The sound was 10 x better on BD too.

If the price is right, I'll buy it right now as I'm on my way to the store.

Picked it up last night, and I'll watch it tomorrow. It's not really the kind of film to watch after an episode of "Dollhouse".

Well, whenever you watch it, have something more "up" to watch afterwards. It's just as depressing the second time around.

Re: DVD Talk review of 'Brokeback Mountain' (Blu-ray)

Last night at almost 3AM I started sampling it, and indeed, those gorgeous images of the mountains, the sheep herd, Ennis leading the herd on horseback...I couldn't help but smile. I didn't watch any one scene because it was, well, almost 3 in the morning and I would have regretted turning it off part way through to sleep if I started it from the beginning. Some of what I saw looked a bit on the soft side, but I doubt I'll have any complaints about it.

I did watch all the extras, which I thought were supposed to be partially HD but instead they were SD 16:9. I'll watch it entirely tonight.

I've only seen it twice before, and I had to psych myself up for it both times. It was so subtly powerful, and yes, depressing.

Thanks for the review link
