I believe I have decided on a new tv. I am going to go with the 46" Panasonic TH-46PZ850U. That is, unless anyone would recommend a better 46" plasma.

Well, I am having a custom piece of furniture built for the tv, so I might want to consider going to 50", if that is a more common size, as I expect the furniture to outlive the tv.
I chose the 46" because of space limitations, but if I am going to shoot myself in the foot if/when I buy a future tv maybe I should go 50". Thoughts?

I have a 50" and, for me, it's the perfect size. Med/small room. I was originally considering getting a 42" back in the day (they didn't offer 46" yet). I'm glad I went with the 50". There is a noticeable difference. I don't know how noticeable between a 46" and 50" would be, though.

Plasma's in Panny's 2009 line are now hitting stores -- some improvements over their 2008 line -- something to consider.

The seating is between 8 and 10 feet depending which seat you're in.
Is any store selling the 2009 Panny models yet? Anyone have the model numbers for those or a guide to what model/lines are the best?

Well....normally I would without hesitation recommend the 50" Panny.
However, you have an interesting situation. You are not asking about image quality. Your asking about fitting in a piece of furniture.
But lets go thru this; IMO the ONLY plasma that is better then Panasonic is the Pioneer. If you want plasma, it doesn't really get better then the Pioneer. More money then the Panny, and Pioneer just announced they would no longer make them. But if ultimate image quality was what you were shooting for, then I wouldn't hesitate to get the Pioneer.
If you want a save a few $$ then the Panny is very close. And and excellent deal. Still besides the Pioneer I think the Panny offers the best picture regardless of price.
However, if you are worried about fitting in a piece of furniture, and that was more important then pic quality, then I might think about a 52" LCD. But then again, you might take some measurements physically. Not all 50" screen size sets are physically the same size. Some put the speakers on the bottom which make the units taller. Others put the speakers on the side which make them wider. Yet same image size.
Just how close are you making this? Is there a way to make the opening bigger then needed now, and use spacers or fillers in case you want to change displays?

I work at Sears and we are selling the new models, just go to their site and put in Panasonic plasma and all the new models will pop up. I think the 46" is normally 1499.99 but i believe is on sale right now.
I just picked up the the 42" 1080P model and love mine.
