Denzel Washington, I think, flourished in the 1990’s with films like Malcolm X, Philadelphia, Crimson Tide, and the Oscar-nominated The Hurricane. These high-profile films helped establish his career as an A-List actor, even if the films themselves weren’t his best.
For my money, I’d list the following films as my Top-5 favorite. Not only does his acting have to count, but the other ingredients of what makes a good movie into a great one have to apply here as well. And it doesn’t matter if A) it bombed at the box office; B) he wasn’t nominated for an Oscar – a movie in my Top 5 transcends all of that. At the same time, just because Denzel was up for an award doesn’t make it great, either. An example of this, IMHO, would be The Hurricane. Yes, he was nominated for an Oscar. Yes, it was based on a real-life person. Yes, he was very good in this film. But, for my tastes, it was overly sentimental (and not entirely factual, which I found out later).
My Top 5 Denzel films:
01: Glory (1989)
02: Philadelphia (1993)
03: Crimson Tide (1995)
04: Training Day (2001)
05: American Gangster (2007)

To be honest, other than Man on Fire, I really can't think of any Denzel movies I care about. I've enjoyed him in many movies but I just don't care about many of them.
I do love, love, love him in Man on Fire though so I think that counts for something.

I disagree, he has been in a lot of good films. Has he been in a lot of blockbusters? No but good quality films, Definitely. And the memorable films, he's got those too. The ones you named in your top 5 at least 3 of them are what I would term memorable. I guess it is a matter of how you classify memorable. If it is an actor that you remember a classic line from a movie or an actor where you go 'yeah I remember him in that movie he was very good'

There's no disputing that many of the titles mentioned above are fine films, including the five I prefer; none (with the exception of, perhaps, Philadelphia) are what I would term "great films". There are many that are successful in one regard or another, but I couldn't call any of his films a classic. Denzel has always reminded me of Clark Gable - movie star looks, lots of talent and a broad spectrum of work. I just don't think Denzel has made his Gone With the Wind or It Happened One Night yet. Time will tell.

Really? Cuz I think Washington is a much better actor than Gable...while I don't think Washington has made a film that is as big as Gone..he does have Malcolm X...which alone trumps Gable in acting ability. Gone was overrated to much as well....too much.
