Only roughly 5M on Friday? This film was predicted to make nearly 40M for the weekend. Can it possibly make 35M the rest of the weekend?

Oh well maybe this'll let Danny Boyle make anything he wants. ANd hopefully this time it'll be alot better than SLumdog.

Great to see Madea drop almost 70% on Friday. That's expected though. Perry's films usually have an enormous drop during weekend 2. However, his films are cheap to make and his audience is apparently very easy to entertain.

I actually saw a guy in his late 20s/early 30s buy a ticket to Jonas Brothers and there was no girl with him. And he'd be in line for about five minutes.

The Hannah Montana concert succeeded for two reasons:
1) Released during Super Bowl weekend with no competition at all.
2) It was touted as a ONE WEEK ONLY event.
Granted that Jonas Brothers 3D has no competition, but it didn't have the stigma that it was going to be a one week only event (or unless you're a twelve-year-old girl who loves IMAX 3D).
There's a chance that it could still have an opening weekend gross of $17-18 million, but Disney is probably disappointed as Hannah Montana did double on half the screens.
EDIT: So my rough estimate is based upon the fact that Hannah Montana had a 50% jump on Saturday followed by a 28% decrease on Sunday.

On the radio this morning they were talking about the Jonahs Brothers movie and the critics that gave it poor reviews. He made a good point that these kind of movies aren't geared towards the critics and they should review it from the perspective of the target demographic. All of the callers were kids ranging in ages of 7-16. They all enjoyed it. So to them it was a good movie. Based on their reviews it's a well done movie. Roger Ebert has reviewed movies in the past that weren't his cup of tea but saw past that and gave it a good rating saying it's a movie he knew the audience that it was made for would like it.

Jonas is going to bomb BIG TIME. I was in the mall yesterday & checked. They didn't sell a single ticket for the 9am 11am or 1pm showing (it's showing every 2 hours). I went to it at 11 am today (Don't flame me as I merely went to pick up ticket stubs for the Disney Movie Rewards program & extras to ebay).
The little tweeners weren't in school today yet once again 9am no tickets sold, 11am I went to had 6 people & (I stayed grinding my teeth the whole time) for the 1pm showing only 15. Usually I can get 40-50 ticket stubs from people on their way out. I only got 9 stubs (& I need 12 for the 3 DMR accounts). I kept the 3D glasses though (even though they asked everybody for them on the way out). I went out just before they came in to grab them. At least the ticket was a free pass (good even for No pass events). What a horrible experience having to sit through it twice & not even to get enough stubs for my Disney Rewards.

20 is about right. I don't know anyone who realistically thought it would do 40. Considering it cost nothing to make, it'll be a huge success when said and done. I've seen Jonas mania up close and it's rivaled only by Twilight fans so I wouldn't be surprised if this has legs with repeat viewings.

Not that I want to see Jonas Bros, but why so much hate towards it? It isn't made for adults. It is made for teen girls. Why is it so bad for them to get a movie aimed at them? Like you never saw and enjoyed movies at their age that were aimed at your age. "Sorry Billy, no Goonies for you, you'd better enjoy Ghandi." Just ignore it & wait a week so you can see Watchmen.

Most people were expecting it do 40 based off the fact that Hannah Montana was able to pull close to that on half the screens on a weekend when movie going is usually down.
Looking at http://boxoffice.com/numbers/
JB played in 1,271 loctations with average $16,522.

I'm more shocked this movie has done so well than the Jonas boys underperforming.
If anything, I was surprised Paul Blart didn't do even better. The first time I saw the trailer I thought that it was gonna do very well based on the lead in the movie and the type of comedy it was. The opening weekend I heard many people (mostly women for some reason) state they wanted to see that. People like crap I guess.

In a New York Times article today, "Americans Flock to the Movies, Seeking a Silver Screen Lining," it says that on Friday, "'Jonas Brothers' sold out more than 800 theaters, according to MovieTickets.com, and was expected to sell a powerful $25 million or more in tickets." It doesn't say whether the expected "$25 million" was for Friday or the whole weekend.
The point of the article is that movie attendance is going way up during this period of economic downturn and the beneficiaries are movies intended to entertain an audience rather than get them to think. The ones cited, in addition to the Jonas Bros. concert movie, are PAUL BLART MALL COP, TAKEN, MADEA GOES TO JAIL, and MARLEY AND ME. The article also expresses high B.O. hopes for WATCHMEN and MONSTERS VS. ALIENS.

Jonas Bros. opened on virtually every Digital 3D screen in the country. This is why Coraline can now only be found at one or two theaters, possibly only in Southern California. This is a massive bomb for Disney. Hopefully they pull the plug on the trio after this. It's sad to see the thing that beat it was a Tyler Perry movie, though. The film is not a massive bomb. It cost nothing to produce. It just severely underperformed. This film was tagged to do anywhere from $25 to $40 million during this opening weekend and could barely scrape up $12 million. It also doesn't help that it was #2 to a film that dropped 60% since it's opening weekend.
I'm more shocked that Street Fighter was able to pull in $4 million. Hell, I'm surprised it made it into seven digit territory.

Here's where I think Disney dropped the ball on the Jonas movie. When the Hannah Montana movie came out, her concerts were selling out everywhere. Her concert movie was positioned as a 'special event' for people who couldn't get tickets to her concert. It was supposed to be for one week only, etc. So Disney got away with their 'premium pricing' strategy. Of course, after that week Disney extended it from one week, and it was soon put out on tv and DVD... just like any other movie. I think it was a mistake to try the 'event' strategy again, because the parents know better now and know this movie will be on Disney Channel in just four months or whatever like HM one was. They probably would've sold a lot more tickets at the normal 3D movie rate.

Luckily they made the budget back in one day, but with a final gross that will probably be less than 50% of the opening weekend is pretty bad. I'm sure the sequel will open well if they can stick to the Friday August 13th, 2010 date.

[QUOTE=Suprmallet;9299494]Jonas Bros. opened on virtually every Digital 3D screen in the country. This is why Coraline can now only be found at one or two theaters, possibly only in Southern California.
CORALINE is still playing in 3-D at several venues in Las Vegas, but then we have more digital 3-D capable screens than most markets.
I'm sure the economy didn't help the Jonas movie, with the ticket prices being so much higher than even the normal 3-D rate.
Maybe they should put CORALINE back in a few of those theaters around the country this weekend; they have until the end of the month before the next big 3-D movie is released (MONSTERS VS. ALIENS)...
As for FRIDAY; $76 million worldwide so far is a huge gross for a slasher film, I'm sure a few sequels will be made.
What's with these Tyler Perry movies? It seems like he does one every three months. It's like a license to print money for this guy.
