Select Best Buys will have a 50% Sale on all Anime DVD's starting March 1 through March 21!

Here are the list of stores that will be having the sale

If you want to know which store is one of the select, go to the Best Buy website, and find a nearby store in your area, if one of the store numbers match the select store number, then that's the store that will be having the sale.

I went to the closest store on that list just to see what they had. Kind of bummed out there was no Ranma season sets to be found. I'm not a big Anime fan but I wouldn't mind getting those at 50% off.

Can anyone confirm this morning that this sale is on now?I can confirm that the sale is up and going at the Danbury, CT location. I just got back from Danbury with great success. Another great savings from DVDTalk ..

Milford, MA

Ergo Proxy (complete) - 24.99
Witchblade (complete) - 28.99
Burst Angel (Veridan collection) - 19.99
Raxhephon (Grand Canon collection) - 34.99

Total - 114.41 (with 5% tax)

All the sets that I was watching were NOT marked up for the sale.

There was one other guy there loading up a basket, but otherwise there was limited traffic for the anime. The store had a minimal collection compared with a few neighboring Best Buys, but the only one around with the sale. I was hoping to lock down some more Miyazaki films, but no such luck.

May return for the Robotech set (kicking myself since I left without it).

So Miyazaki films weren't on sale? Or not in stock? I was kicking myself for not checking, but I was so rushed, I just grabbed a few things to go (Haruhi complete, FMA season one, One Piece Second Voyage).

I was getting ready to jump in the car when I decided to check the economics. Nearest BB with sale: 35 miles or 48 minutes away. My SUV gets 15 mpg @ $2/Gal = $9.33 roundtrip gas + $6 tolls each way = $12. Over $20 just gas and tolls for a maybe savings. Gotta skip this one.

I've been spending too much money at Best Buy lately...

I'll head down to my local one tomorrow. Even if none of the Hawaii stores were listed, I read that the list was not finalized, leaving it practically up in the air whether or not a store is trying to clear their stock. If there's a sign, then I guess I'll know.

They should be. It might not ring up at half off, but a manager will manually adjust the price to reflect the discount. The only YMMV is with Blu-rays. Some of us were lucky enough to get a manager to take the 50% off on Blu-rays where others unfortunately struck out.

anyone in here from GA (besides Erdick) and had a chance to hit up any of the BB locations listed?

I went by my local store this morning and got 6 sets (one of those being a single disc) for $125

Trumbull, CT. pickings are kinda slim from what I saw with very few boxsets / complete series. The aisle consisted mostly of volumes of some the series mentioned above.

I had Trinity in my hand but put it back in favor of:

Samurai 7: Complete Series $39.99
Ultimate Hellsing: Vol. I Steelbook $14.99
Ultimate Hellsing: Volumes II - IV $8.99 each

I should've went to Danbury as planned.

I should've went to Danbury as planned. If you have a Blu-ray player, Danbury has a couple copies of Samurai 7 for $69.99. With the discount(assuming that they are still manually applying the discount on Blu-rays), the price would be $34.99. Not too often that you find something that's actually cheaper on Blu.

Got...

Cowboy Bebop: Remix - Complete - $19.99
Gunbuster vs. Diebuster (Blu-ray LE) - $34.99
The Girl Who Leapt Though Time (LE) - $17.99

The Blu-ray didn't scan as 50% off but without even asking the cashier said "hey, this should be 50% off" and changed it.

I believe the only Austin location on the final list (where I went) was the location near 51st Street and 35 (near Home Depot).

Ok for those of you guys having problems getting the discount on the blu-ray titles, it seems like the discount is automatically taken off Afro Samurai Season 1 Blu-ray which makes it 9.99. Take this title up with other blu-ray titles you want, and when they say the discount doesn't apply to blu-ray, you can clearly point out the discount on the Afro Samurai Season 1. It just worked for me when they refused to give me Samurai 7 BD boxset initially and when I went back the second time I included Afro and they conceded.

Thanks for the heads up on this sale. I picked up the complete collections of Cowboy Bebop and Ghost in the Shell: SAC for $20 each. Good deal.

Those were the same Miyazaki films at the two local stores that I visited. I was hoping to pick up Princess Mononoke.

That is what I found too. However I didn't check the "Family" section so they might be hiding out there. Will have to check tomorrow.

I would not depend on in store locater as it's wrong about half the time especially with a lot of limited product such as anime. In store locator will only show in stock if there are more than 3 items in stock. Imagine my surprise when I went to the store this morning and finding a lot more than I expected due to the inaccuracy of the in store locator.

I went yesterday morning to the Hadley, MA store and got Gundam Wing Complete Volume 1 for $19.99. Went back today after work around 3 to pick up Cowboy Bebop but all three they had yesterday are already gone. I may go back some time to get the Guyver complete collection, but I'm not sure if I want to bother. They had 6 copies so I'm not in a huge rush and I'd be totally ok with not getting it.
Is it possible the percent off will go up if things don't sell or will they just ship everything out to nearby stores that will still be carrying anime?

My understanding from the manager I spoke to yesterday about the anime is it's not going away. This is a sale to get rid of the excess anime. They are reducing the space and will only be carrying top selling items. He informed me they have not gotten any shipment for awhile now. The shelves looked very slim. He told me the sale just started and the shelves have alway looked like they don't have much. Now, the other stores have alot of product.

Samurai 7: Complete Series $39.99

You got ripped on that Samurai Seven, I got the Blu-Ray set for $34.99.

Made my 1st stop today, my BB actually had quite a large selection left, I wish I knew more about anime b/c there were a lot of complete sets I was tempted to get.

I just picked up a few things that I wouldn't have gotten if not for the sale.

Naruto: Uncut Box Set 12 Limited Edition (the only LE I've gotten of the series, sorry, I am a Naruto dork though, I've been buying all the regular uncut sets, but I totally just got this one for the awesome Rock Lee figurine. I LOVE IT!

Naruto: Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow 3-Disc Steelbook

Samurai 7: The Complete Series (Blu-Ray) - Never seen it, but for $35 I couldn't pass this up, got the clerk to just override the price.

And some pics of my haul. . .

Uh actually no he didn't. He got the Samurai Seven Collector's Set that has the guidebooks for each volume. It sells for 89.99 on Amazon and is currently out of stock. I would have easily picked it up for 39.99 to go along with my Blu-ray version of this.

Someone mentioned that Afro Samurai Season 1 Blu-ray is automatically ringing up at half off($9.99). You can try and take up Freedom, Gunbuster and Afro Samurai to the register. You can then point out that the sale does apply to Blu-rays or Afro Samurai wouldn't ring up at half off. You'll have a good chance that they will manually apply the discount to the two Blu-rays that you want and all that you would have to do is return Afro Samurai. Worth a shot.

So yesterday I went into a local BB and they had signs all over the section stating All Anime 50% off. I was able to pick up Robotech and Raxhephon. I made a small list of things I might want which I would check against other sale prices online including the Death Note LEs with Figures. Today when I went in the store, the signs were still up, but there was an orange sticker on the word all and a sign up that said "Select Anime 50% off" Each anime that was supposed to be 50% off appeared to have an orange sticker on it. Unfortunately a few of the Death Notes didn't have the stickers and rang up full at the register. The supervisor would not discount them either. So much for trying to get Akira...

The Westwood, CA would not allow me to take the discount off of the blu-ray Samurai 7 set. However, I did notice something that might be of interest. After being shutdown for the Blu-Ray set I went back to the Anime section and picked up the dvd set that comes complete with a set of "guidebooks" that feature art and some interviews. The dvds are also housed in a digipack. The sticker price on this set is $79.99 yet it rang up as $19.99. My only guess is that Best Buy's system doesn't differentiate between this more expensive set and the cheaper Viridian Collection set.

Just something to keep in mind if you come across this set.

I'm surprised they'd be selling the Miyazakis at 50% off. Seems like they'd be top sellers and appealing more to the family crowd than the typical anime crowd. Cool if you can get them, though.

I agree with davidh777 that the Miyazakis should be best sellers up there with Disney. But the fact of the matter is that most people in the US have no idea what his films are like and have never seen one.

Which is good news for us deal hunters. I picked up Spirited Away and Howls Moving Castle for 12 bucks a pop and will use these as birthday gifts for the inevitable parties my little girl will be attending. I can pretty much be assured that my daughters friends have never seen these films, and equally assured that their parents as well as the kids will fall in love with them.

Bottom Line: The Miyazakis are 50% off and we should be celebrating and snatching them up to gift our friends.

I thought this over last night and decided to call the corporate number to complain (yeah, I'm an ass!). If he still refused to give it to me for half off (and I still decided to buy it), they would send me a gift card refunding the difference ($15).

Makes sense now. Before buying it today, the manager made one of the employees go into a back room and find out what the film was classified under. The employee came back and said "action."

Had the day off from work so I decided to hit up two different local stores for some deals.

Marin City, CA had a great selection and their Anime section still looked very well stocked.

Looked like the word hadn't gotten out yet about that particular store. I wasn't able to get Samurai 7 (Blu-Ray) to get adjusted at 50%, even though I bought Afro Samurai (Blu-Ray) at 50% and the Standard/Collectors Versions of Samurai 7 were ringing up at 50%. It was just annoying why the associates I talked to and the manager would not clearly explain to me why they couldn't adjust the price.

San Rafael, CA had a small but decent selection left. This store is a "foothole" store compared to the previous one, so they don't get as much merchandise as bigger Best Buy stores. An employee who I was talking to mentioned to me that lots of people were frequenting this store and buying up all the Anime since the sale hit.

So all in all, Samurai 7 (Blu-Ray) frustration aside, I picked up:

Samurai 7: The Complete Series (Standard Edition)---$18.99
Afro Samurai: Season 1 Director's Cut (Blu-Ray)---$9.99
Burst Angel: The Complete Series---$19.99
Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-Chan---$8.49
Full Metal Alchemist: The Complete First Season---$24.99
Full Metal Alchemist: Season Two Part One---$19.99
Full Metal Alchemist: Season Two Part Two---$19.99

I might go back and get Lova Hina: The Complete Series, but I am not sure yet. Also as much as I wanted to pick up those Bleach Series Sets, I don't think I could keep up buying them as the series went on.

Has anyone found Miyazaki movies in the family or kids sections? I snatched up Howl's Moving Castle and that was all my best buy had, but I didn't think to check other sections... anyone have any luck?

The only Miyazaki films at the Best Buy's I went to were Howl's and Spirited Away, both were in the Anime sections.

Thanks for the tip! I also got Samurai 7: The Complete Series (with guidebooks) for $19.99, even though the sticker shows $79.99. The Viridian was sitting right next to it and I would have gotten the Viridian if not for your tip. Now I have 140 pages of interviews and production art to flip through.

No luck on getting Akira or Samurai 7 blu-rays at the 50% discount.

I picked up

Cowboy Bebop Remix - Complete Series $20
Samurai 7: The Complete Series (Viridian Collection) $18.99
Full Metal Alchemist: The Complete First Season $25

There were a couple of others I was considering, so I may go back. There were none of the Samurai 7 sets with the guidebooks, unfortunately.

Canyon Springs, CA Best Buy would not take 50% off Samurai 7, Akira, or Gunbuster vs Diemaster. The stupid thing is, it took 50% off Afro Samurai.

The manager's reason for this was even stupider...he said that the 50% off only applied to titles on the table. i told him that the sign said all Anime and then he said yeah, all the ones on the table and the DVDs. When I pointed out Afro's price, he ignored it.

So I just got the Samurai 7 DVD with artbooks for $20.00 plus an XBox live card with the Watchman movie pack. The clerk asked if I wanted Afro since it was on sale, and I told him no, I added that they could have gotten more than $100 out of me but they chose to just get $40.

I just found out that 5 Centimeter's Per Second is actually out of print, so if you're interested in making some cash you could pick it up for $10.99 and resell it for a good amount of money on ebay or elsewhere, I've seen it going from 45-60 bucks. I'm glad I picked up my copy when I did, my store is all sold out of the six copies they did have.

I was able to get the Samurai 7 and Vexille BDs for 50% off, although they had to do a manual override. A friend scored the Freedom and Gunbuster sets (I didn't need those).

The location I went to still had a lot in stock as of Wednesday night. I was able to pick up Le Chevalier d'Eon, Ergo Proxy, Death Note set 1, RahXephon: Grand Canon Collection and the two Red Garden collections for half price. I spent more than I had planned to, but at least it was a great deal. This was at the Gainesville, VA store.

Edit: I should mention that they are probably OOS on Samurai 7 now.

West Simsbury, CT: I went there yesterday morning. The shelves were packed and there were no signs indicating 50% off. I picked up The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (LE). The only two Miyazaki films available were Howl's and Spirited Away. There was a Full Metal Panic/Full Metal Panic Fumoffu box set but when I picked it up, I could hear the DVDs rolling around inside along with what sounded like broken plastic bits. :( Sadly, I'm not as familiar with anime series as I would like to be, so I couldn't go as nuts as you guys :)

One boxset did catch my eye, it was called Mushi-shi. Anyone ever see this one?

I can vouch for the quality of Mushi-shi. I bought all the individual volumes when they came out after renting the first disc and I don't regret it one bit. It's a very unique series. If you like supernatural/fantasy/sci-fi type shows, it'll be right up your alley. I don't know how to describe it. It's kind of an elegant, quiet show. I really liked the music in it too.

Was able to score Samurai 7 Blu-Ray tonight, much thanks tonymontana 313. It was the Afro Samurai trick that did it. The cashier called the media guy over when it didn't ring up 50% off and he tried to c-block me claiming that it was only for DVD's and there was a Blu-Ray section and a DVD section and since I got it from the Blu-Ray section that is why it wasn't on sale. Even after I stumped him with "then why did Afro Samurai Blu-Ray ring up 50% off" he still wouldn't budge and told her to call the manager. Well the manager could have given a fuck, he just said "ok what's the problem, you know how to do this" and had her manually take the 50% off.
Also picked up Coyote Ragtime Show thinpack and Witchblade complete series. And of course I will be returning Afro Samurai since I already have it on dvd and the show sucks anyways.

And on a totally unrelated note, I also got The Orange Box for $10 bucks with the sweet ass RZ gamers club $20 off coupon.

I made use of the same trick to get Akira for $17.49. I've already returned Afro Samurai for a refund. I would also like to thank tonymontana.

That's the best 10 bucks that you could spend. I just started playing Orange Box last week and am still on the first game. A few dropped frames here and there, but an overall great game and there's still 4 more games to go.

Lame. I say either pull Afro, Miyazaki, etc. from the shelves during this sale, or restrict your sale to certain eligible titles (non-best-sellers, non-new-releases). But don't claim that the reason you don't want to discount specific things is because they aren't anime.

I agree with that one. Especially the Afro Blu-ray since the Canyon Springs, CA store seems to be run by non-customer service centric people.

I can go to the Riverside store and get so much better customer service. They don't argue, they don't fight, they know how to treat their customers. So why can't this store be on the list.

Also agree. Working retail for the past 4+ years in positions ranging from Associate to Supervisor, I would expect a little consistency from stores. I am aware that Retail Stores do have to be "inconsistent" for things such as returns, as it varies from customer to customer, but you really can't argue with a customer about misleading signage.

If there is an issue where in one day you are answering the 50% off Blu-Ray question for even more than 2 customers, it is your responsibility as an Inventory, Merchandise or Store Manager to do something about it. Either make sure all employees know they can manually change the Blu-Ray's or do what other posters have mentioned happening at their stores....add additional signage stating they are not part of the sale.

It's completely frustrating to see some posters spend up to nearly $300-400 in one go, only to be refused on some Anime Blu-Ray they wanted. Also working retail I've heard every bullshit excuse to not granted signing errors, but some of the inconsistencies are flat out lame.

Interesting note: in-store kiosk ordering seems to work. My sadness at the absence of the fancy Samurai 7 set led me to give it a shot. It cost me yknow, $2.50 more for shipping, but what the hell.

Not all titles seem to be marked as 50% off, just ones that are (and maybe "could be") carried in that branch.

May amount to nothing, too, in the end, but we'll see...!

Send BB an email via their online contact form and request a refund for the shipping. BB is supposed to be running a promotion where you receive free shipping if you place the order at the store. You're supposed to have an employee place the order from a different computer than the one at the kiosk. Any idea if Totoro or Kiki's Delivery Service can be gotten this way?

I know I glanced at totoro enough to see both editions were still on there, but I can't for the life of me recall whether the 2 disc was on sale (I know the original single release was still 14.99, because that was what reminded me it was the old edition).

I saw Kiki in the Hayao Miyazaki search results I did, but I can't recall whether it was on sale either (sorry :\)

Castle of Cagliostro might not be part of the sale because it's a Manga(Anchor Bay) release. The titles that are on sale were all released by Disney.

You might be right, good catch. I've only just snagged some ghibli stuff from closing CCs, never actually seen any (it's sitting in my wall-crushing "to be watched" piles--or, actually, shelves and shelves), so I know pretty much nothing about who released what.
However, I do know that plenty of Bandai titles ARE in the sale (I was planning on finally snagging Gundam Wing to fill one of the remaining R1 gaps in my Gundam collecton, for instance), but not all of them. It appears, say, Wing v2 is not in many (if any) stores, and so did not show up on sale at the kiosk, despite the fact that it was the same store I bought v1 from. The Big O, on the other hand, I need v1....it was on sale, inexplicably, despite not being present. Didn't understand the logic on those at all.
Also, Wing v1 was no longer listed as onsale there, despite the fact that I'd actually bought it on sale there. OK, well, pricematched after buying it the day before the sale started, so perhaps it never was. Hmm.

Also, good note, it does have to be a store running the sale, I should've mentioned that, as I knew that myself.

I'm just kiddin', mate! I too fell victim, but the deals were far too good to be dismissed ..even with the economy falling all around us. My biggest disappointment was that I couldn't find (among 3 Best Buy stores) any Miyazaki films that I didn't already own. I only came across Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away. Disappointing.

Final Tally

Witchblade: Complete (popped this series in first and almost done. excellent so far!)
Ergo Proxy: Complete
Burst Angel: Complete
Rahxephon: Complete
Basilisk: Complete
Robotech: Protoculture Collection
Neon Genisis Evangelion: Complete

$205 spent (not including 5% tax) - $205 saved.

Others that I was close to blind purchasing, but passed on: Deathnote complete season 1, Coyote Ragtime Show complete, Trinity Blood and Mushishi complete.

The only preorder I might be interested in returning for is the March release of Beserk complete, but I'm not entirely worried about it. I easily have enough material for the next 6 months or so ..........

It's possible, but I think it's more likely that it's the usual price variances from store to store. I found a number of things were 50% off at one kiosk I went to but not the other. Neither of my kiosks had some of the items on sale that other people have been reporting like the Miyazaki films, Chrono Crusade and Princess Tutu

I read on a Berserk forum that the Berserk DVD sets shipped several weeks ago because the original release date was around New Year's Day. I'm hoping that BB stores have been holding back Berserk sets, and Berserk will appear on shelves tomorrow.

Damn Thinpak cases.

Out of the Negima!, Burst Angel, Lova Hina and Samurai 7 sets I got from this sale, half of them came with shattered Thin Pak spindles.

Does anyone have a link for 5 Centimeters Per Second on the BB site so that I can check inventory? I can't seem to find it.

they discontinued it so it's not in their online inventory. They will only have some random copies that the individual stores haven't sold out of yet.

You'd think they would still list it on the site until the stores no longer have it in stock. Although I can't think of any names right now, I'm sure I've seen OOP titles listed on their site before.

Save your money and exchange them. Out of all the recent sets I picked up the center holder on one of the DVD hubs was broken and the disc was floating around (didn't hear it before I bought it). Witchblade custom case. The CS agent let me swap it out for a new one without any question.

I went to one of the store with 50% off on anime, and find out that I can order the second set of Full metal alchemist for the half price. Just go to the Kiosk, and order it. You can have it delivered to your address or do store pick up from other stores. Not sure whether it is YMMV, but I paid total 26. something for the Second set of Full metal alchemist, which was released today.

Love Hina was the last copy at both stores I went to :(

Burst Angel, I could probably try to exchange for another if either BB has them left.

Also I just found out my custom case of "My-Hime" has a shattered spindle as well. Hopefully I'll be able to exchange that as well, seeing as only one of the BB's I went to had them in stock.

My Best Buy had Season 8 of Dragon Ball Z that wasn't there when the sale first started, so now i'm caught up. I'm pretty happy being able to grab the last 3 seasons for half off.

Went back this past weekend and got...

In store:

- Spirited Away - $11.99

From the Kiosk:

- Princess Mononoke - $11.99
- Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind - $11.99
- My Neighbor Totoro - $11.99
+ shipping

A few things to note...
Kiki's Delivery Service was full price...
Most other Ghibli titles were reduced however...
These include The Cat Returns, Whisper of the Heart, My Neighbors the Yamadas, Pom Poko & Porco Russo. All were $11.99... the only thing that sucks is having to pay for shipping which seems rather high.

Also, Spirited Away that I picked up in store was NOT there last week or the week before, I asked the media "specialist" if they had been restocking anime and he told me that only select titles have been coming in and that Spirited Away was one of them... YMMV but if you're looking for something specific check your store again, they might have gotten something in.

And a note for people trying to use the kiosk... your best bet is probably to just ask where a kiosk is when you come in the store and not have anyone help you with it... My mistake was I asked an employee in the media section and he told me I couldn't get the deal through the Kiosk... which made me bitter and pissed and I walked off and found one myself. After I placed my order I then walked back to the DVDs and showed him my printed out receipt and he looked at me confused. Also all of the 50% off sign-age was taken down in my store (Kingston, NY)

I'm a Silver Rewards Zone Bestbuy member, got a free shipment on the Animes I ordered from a Bestbuy store kiosk that carry the 50% off sale.

First time I did this and I was suprised how poorly they packaged the DVDs.

Thank goodness the Cowboy Bebop Remix was packaged in a thick Amaray case.

so be forwarned if you intend to order your 50% Animes and have it shipped!

I definitely prefer boxes, but the Disney Movie Club shipped all of my introductory-offer DVDs in a package like the one above, and surprisingly everything arrived in immaculate condition.

Lame. I say either pull Afro, Miyazaki, etc. from the shelves during this sale, or restrict your sale to certain eligible titles (non-best-sellers, non-new-releases). But don't claim that the reason you don't want to discount specific things is because they aren't anime.

Got the NO from (feeling Hero associate or a full of pride Manager) at a Bestbuy store about it?

Your lucky. my best Buys had a stripped down shitty collection to begin with. I would have loved to get those Kiba sets.:duel:

I made the 20 mile trek out to the suburbs on the last day to see what they had and finally scored an Akira blu-ray at half-off. They also had a 60% off end cap of non-anime stuff and got a Big Lebowski bowling ball set for $10!

Damn, not even 50% made a dent... oh boy.

I wish they would have had a store with the sale around me :(

First off, no store near me had the sale so obviously I'm a little mad =). Here's my thought based on Xage's pictures. BB put anime 50% off in areas that were not selling well. But if the areas already had no market for anime, would they really create a market for it just on a sale?

Say, for example, that horror movies don't sell well in my area. That's because the people don't like horror movies right? So, even if you put horror movies 50% off, I'm still not going to buy any because I don't like horror, and consider it a waste of money.

In essence, BB is trying to create something out of nothing. Instead of that, why not put the 50% off sale in stores that sell anime really well? Anime DVD's would fly off the shelf, and they make a profit and customers are happy.

So how about redoing this sale in the whole country? So I could get my paws on some deals he he he.

Not me personally. Just responding to certain situations reported in this thread.

If anyone picked up a 5 Centimeters Per Second dvd that they would like to sell, I'd be glad to buy it. Stores near me have the hard to find Exploitation Cinema Collection sets and the WB Sci-Fi Double Feature Moon Zero/When Dinosaurs Ruled the World (with Victoria Vetri nudity) that I would be glad to pick up and sell to you at store price in return for the favor.
