Big Release Comparisons

No tables this week due to time constraints.




These weekly threads are for price comparisons of all the big new releases, and the posting and discussion of that particular week's store exclusives and freebies.

These lists will likely be incomplete until Wednesday or so, since DVDs are released on Tuesday and one of us needs to visit all the stores to confirm things.

Volunteers needed: I regularly go to Best Buy, Circuit City, Target, and Walmart; but don't visit the other stores every week. If you work at or regularly go to the FYE/TWEC chains, Costco, Borders, K-mart/Sears, Barnes and Noble, Blockbuster, Hot Topic, or any other store that has DVD exclusives; we'd appreciate any updates you could give us.

Costco -
14 or so award winning Universal films have been re-packaged in "Focus Features" gold slipcovers, and contain $7.50 moviecash for either Milk or Frost/Nixon, good until 3/31/09 - these are "on sale" in that if you buy one from each set of 6-8 films, they knock $7 off, bringing the total down to about $7.50 each, or free if you factor in the moviecash

Beat me to it, Trevor! Logged in just now to report on the Target exclusive "What Just Happened." BTW, what is Dragon Hunters and what kind of comic book does it come with?

I don't know if this would count as an exclusive since its only to rent(but people can rent it and not return it). The DVD will be available to own everywhere on 04/28/09.

Blockbuster has several of these every week, titles that can only be rented at Blockbuster, but may be available for sale everywhere.

What is more rare, and happens perhaps twice a month, is one of these titles having exclusive content on the DVDs. There have been perhaps as many as 35 of these over the last year or two, including the three I listed here this week.

It is an animated feature length film, looks like it is based on a TV series, as Amazon has several volumes of it. But they don't have the movie, so this film appears to be a Walmart exclusive.

It stars (the voice of) Forest Whitaker, is rated PG, 80 minutes long, and (surprisingly for Walmart) widescreen.

Oh, the comic book is a 48 page one by Laurent Turner and Matthieu Venant, titled Dragon Hunters: A Dragon Like No Other.

When I find an exclusive for the first time, I post it in the current week's thread, so that everyone who tracks these will see it.

Saving an extra 50 cents if they do the pricematch with the extra 10%.

They didn't give me the extra 10%, but I'm not going to quibble over $1.35 total, especially since I used a gift card (I initially paid $13.49 each since I used the 10% off President's Day coupon). I'm just happy to save 11 bucks.

I actually didn't know about it, so I'm glad you posted it in this week's thread. Does anyone know what the exclusive bonus content is? I assume the bonus content is on the SD only, and not the BD. I plan on buying the BD, so it may not be worth it for me to rent it, depending on what it is. Of course, if the content is on their BD, maybe I'll just buy it there...

I've never seen exclusive content on blu-rays at BBV, but I don't go very often or search super carefully. Usually, the exclusive content is just one short featurette or some outtakes. I didn't stop long enough to write down what it was for each of the newer titles. But I just found this via google from viewaskew:

The quibble would have only been over 35 cents actually, as the extra 10% is 10% of the difference, not the total. And yes, not worth quibbling over. I've found that if I ask for the extra 10% off when I start the pricematch, I have a better chance of getting it. And technically, I think the 110% now only applies to other store matches, not their own sales, but I still sometimes get it on BB pricematches. It's all YMMV, and not worth the hassle, but if I'm there anyway I at least ask for it.

I try to go back and put older stuff I find in that release week's thread, but think it is more helpful to also put it in the current week's thread. I'd have to bump old threads to get anyone to notice a change, and that would get tiresome for everyone.

I could be wrong, but I'm with you in that it is best to just be able to follow one weekly thread for all the exclusive updates.

I'm pretty sure they only do the 110% match for a competitor's price, not their own. I think when it's their own price that is lower, they just do a straight up pricematch.

Yeah, I clarified that a few posts back. But it's YMMV, I've had them give me the extra 10% difference on their own sales.

Thanks for the DVD and show info, Trevor. I'd never heard of this series but it looks rather interesting. Picked up the DVD/comic book combo yesterday, looking forward to checking it out. Thanks for the tip!
