I have the chance to buy a pioneer dvl-909 for 150 dollars, should I do it? I've heard that it won't play some DVD's the right way (ie- Evil Dead 2) Also, does it have a dolby digital decoder in it? It looks like it does, but Im not really sure.

That's a good deal. But if you are asking if the player decodes dolby digital internally and outputs it via six RCA jacks, the answer is no.
It has both optical and coaxial outputs for DVD and RF out for laserdisc (which you would need an RF decoder for if you cared about dolby digital laserdisc playback)

I heard somewhere that early versions of the LD/DVD combi-players were able to allow recording onto VHS. I also heard there was a high defect rate on these players.
All of which is heresay because I have not known anyone that actually has one.
Still a great deal for $150. I think they originally retailed for $999 or $1099.

I actually passed it up, but if I want it, its not really going anywhere, its for sale at a store I work in, so I can keep my eye on it The only reason I really wanted it was to see star wars, honestly. But the price of the laserdisc seems a little high for nothing really special...I did hear something strange, someone told me they don't have any coding protection (?) basically saying they could play any region coding.

A little high for Star Wars on laserdisc? You can pick up the original trilogy (not the boxed set, but all three films) for under $30 brand new. THX certified, widescreen. That's a hell of a deal, considering we wont be seeing the trilogy on DVD until 2006 (or whenever Sir George decides it's time)

I saw this model in Sears yesterday, and it was $999.99 (!) I thought it was the 919, until I looked closer.
