Oscar winners that didn't deserve it?
using this to remember all the people and movies that i didn't think really deserved to win the Oscar that year.
1. my first, rather obvious choice is "Crash" in 2006 winning Best Pic. the much maligned, talked about choice didn't deserve to beat out the stellar "Brokeback Mountain" which was so different and of course not the safe choice, but to me had Best Pic written all over it.
2. of course, "Shakespeare in Love" i didn't think was close to Best Pic in 1999 and maybe should have gone to SPR, but i didn't see the other 3 to make an informed opinion, just know SiL is not Best Pic quality in the least.
3. also, didn't think "Gladiator" was Best Pic deserving, though i may be in the minority on that one.
4. and, Russell should have won for "A Beautiful Mind" over Denzel for at least his role in "Training Day" and not won for Best Actor in "Gladiator".
5. i thought Kate Hudson was magnificent in "Almost Famous" and after seeing Marcia Gay Harden in "Pollock" just don't understand how she beat out the sublime Hudson performance. this one still haunts me.
6. Eddie Murphy was amazing in "Dreamgirls" and thought he was robbed to the 10th degree when they gave it to the fossil of Alan Arkin.
i know many others will be unearthed...
so what are your thoughts on Oscar winners that really didn't deserve the nice, little gold statue?

Titanic...LA Confidential is a much better film. Titanic's production was amazing and deserved all those production/technical awards and what not..but LA Confidential was the much better film.
Julia Roberts over Ellyn Burstyn. Come fucking on! The only role I've ever liked Roberts was in Closer. Maybe it's also cuz Owens called her a ****...I don't think so but due to my distaste of her it eases my pain a bit.

Return of the King.
It's the Oscar equivalent of saying "Return of the Jedi" was the best of the three Star Wars films. They screwed up by not giving "Fellowship of the Ring" the Oscar, then shortly thereafter decided that they'd nominate all three, wait and reward the last movie (even though it was a mess) as a way of honoring the trilogy. Stupid, stupid decision - particularly in a year that brought us Mystic River, Lost In Translation and several other much better films.

American Beauty. Over hyped, overrated mediocre film. Certainly not "best picture" worthy by any stretch of the imagination.

but considering the other choices in 2000, i don't think it is far fetched. now that i understand and appreciate it more, i probably would have liked "The Insider", but no way Cider House Rules, Green Mile, or Sixth Sense was more deserving.

1998: Edward Norton should have gotten this over Roberto Benigni.
1999: Kevin Spacey over Russell Crowe. This should have been Crowe's oscar for the Insider

Happy Feet
While the competition for Best Animated that year wasn't particularly strong, the two other nominees (Cars, Monster House) were far more watchable than that abortion.
Return of the King was easily the best of the 3 Lord of the Rings flicks, so I had no issue with it winning, at all. (Though it was also the only one that required a photographic memory of the prior installment to know what was going on in a few short scenes.)
