Criterion vs. Other releases

I am not sure if this exists or not but I figured I would ask. I am wondering which movies are worth getting on Criterion and which ones are worth getting on a more standard release. For instance I believe that the standard This is Spinal Tap and the recent Hard Boiled are suppose to be better then the original Criterion releases. If you disagree with this that is fine, I am just trying to make a point. I always thought that a website that compared the content and quality of different releases or reissues of dvd's would be of great use. Anyways if anyone knows of a site or has some tips, would be much appreciated.

Re: Criterion vs. Other releases

I'd suggest going with any Criterion edition that is still in print. Some of the earlier releases such as Spinal Tap, Notorious, Hard Boiled, Robocop, etc are OOP and you'd pay an insane amount of money trying to get them, when all have had re-releases surpassing the original Criterion edition. For me though, I can honestly say I've never been let down by a Criterion purchase.

Check out www.dvdbeaver.com for comparisons and screenshots. As far as Criterion goes, there are several releases that have superior R2 editions. I'm sure there's a thread on the subject somewhere around here.
