Brooklyn Rules (Prinze, Baldwin, 2007)

Brooklyn, 1985. With the mob world as a backdrop, three life-long friends struggle with questions of love, loss and loyalty.

Freddie Prinze Jr.
Alec Baldwin
Jerry Ferrara
Mina Suvari
Scott Caan

Anyone catch this flick at all? I had never even heard of it but stumbled upon it in Netflix and with the limited number of "Watch Instantly" I added it to my queue.

I have to admit I was fairly surprised. I was expecting some cringe worthy dialog and some cliche plot direction but it was quite the opposite.

Besides the accent, Freddy Prinze did a pretty good job with this. Jerry Ferrara was cast quite well. My only gripe might be the Mina Suvari charachter as, like with a lot of movies, it seemed like the love story was inserted so the movie had a love story.

Even is spots of the movie where you thought you were about to get the "ah, here comes the cheesy/cliche part" you didn't.

Spoiler:
the ending where Carmine and Michael flip a coin to decide on who will shoot the guy and Carmine ends up doing it anyway was done well. Maybe some of you saw that coming but I didn't.

Instead of being a mafia-type story, it was really a buddy/coming of age story that used the Brooklyn mafia to help tell it. I think maybe the fact that Freddie Prinze Jr. was in it didn't help.

I give it a B+ for coming out of no where to entertain me.
