"London Boulevard" (directing debut from "The Departed" screenwriter)
This is a great great book. Seek it out if you can. I'm pretty pleased with the casting. But the main female character in the book is much much older thank Knightley. She's not a "young" recluse at all.

Casting news. Thumbs way up that Winstone has joined the cast. But thumbs way way down that this news confirms Knightly will play a character who is at least 60 years old in the book. Something Winstone's character only guessed her at. I'm guessing they won't put Knightly in make up to look 36 years older than her actual age. This really pisses me off. They are fucking up the dynamics of the character and why Winstone has a relationship with her.
Ray Winstone and Keira Knightley are set to play unlikely lovers in a new gangster movie.
The pair has signed to star alongside Colin Farrell and Anna Friel in London Boulevard, The Departed screenwriter William Monahan's directorial debut.
Winstone will play a criminal who is released from prison and becomes romantically involved with a reclusive actress, played by Knightley.
It's not the first time the British pair has shared the big screen - they were co-stars in 2004 film King Arthur.
The new movie will begin shooting in the British capital this summer.

FINALLY, a trailer. It opens in the U.K. in three weeks. Here in the U.S. in February. Which means, I'll be able to buy it on DVD from Amazon.co.uk by the time it comes out here

Well, this is depressing. The film is getting TERRIBLE reviews. I just read about a dozen, all negative. The highest rating I saw was 2 out of 5 stars. Two critics even called it a turkey. Damn it. I absolutely loved the book and have been looking forward to this for a year.

It's a mess all right. I didn't outright hate it and regret watching it, but I could in no way recommend this film.
There was a certain charm to it, but it's one big string of cliche's like many of the reviews stated. Even with solid(as usual)performances from Farrel and Winstone, and an excellent turn by David Thewlis, it couldn't be saved from the completely inept direction and script.
It had all the right ingredients to work in a general sense, but it's like a flawed film school project with major stars.

I don't know if I would call it inept, but it felt like Monahan wasn't able to capitalize on a lot of opportunities that the story presented him. I did like Farrell a lot, as well as Anna Friel. Monahan has a ways to go, though.

Bump. This will be available to watch in the U.S. on On Demand starting October 5th. And then it has a November 11th theatrical release date. Almost one year after it was released in the U.K cinemas. Again, not a bad film. Just nothing great. I still beg everyone to read the book!
