Re: Robert DeNiro Underrated Movies

A Bronx Tale. Criminally undervalued directorial effort, how he didn't make another movie for 13 years after this puzzles me. The scene with the bikers is amazing.

Agreed on Angel Heart, Cape Fear, and especially Midnight Run. Brazil really isn't that underrated.

Re: Robert DeNiro Underrated Movies

Underrated in performance or underrated movies?

De Niro is usually good when given good material (which he hasn't had in a decade it seems).

It's been a long time since I've seen Brazil. I know it's widely praised around here but I honestly can't remember anything other than a few select scenes.

I thought he was great in Cape Fear, although the movie wasn't anything special.

Sleepers is one of my all time favorite movies that no one talks about. He's great in it and it's a great movie.

Re: Robert DeNiro Underrated Movies

Say what you want about the movie, but Deniro scared the shit out of me in The Fan. I don't think anyone plays psycho better than him.

I also loved his rapport with Bill Murray in Mad Dog and Glory.

De Niro is my all time favorite actor & I own almost all his films....
I hate this movie with a passion, it was horrible....
And I'm a fan of some of cast like PSH & I think Schumacher is a good director.
I can't believe he wasted his time with this piece of crap....
I'm curious,Why did you like it so much?
I tried giving it a second chance & I ended up hating it more....

Re: Robert DeNiro Underrated Movies

Robert De Niro is the best actor of all time to me....
I've been a fan of him for a long time,I own pretty much all his films on DVD....

His most under-rated stuff was:

Bang the Drum Slowly,Amazing performance that no one seems to talk about.
The King of Comedy, not under-rated to his fans but others very much so....
Falling in Love, Not a huge fan of romantic/love films but this is really good....
Midnight Run, One of his first comedy films & he proves he can do anything....
Jacknife, No one seems to talk about this one but it's top notch....
Mad Dog and Glory,De Niro & Murray in reversed roles, very interesting....
The Fan, Snipes still in his prime with De Niro playing the perfect psycho.
Men of Honor, Cuba proves he's oscar worthy & De Niro is great as always....
The Good Shepherd,Flopped in theaters but it was one of my favs that year.

His over-looked stuff that most don't recognize:

Angel Heart, Bobby is great in it,not a real big part but it makes a big impact.
Guilty by Suspicion,Great cast & a good movie no one talks about....
Cop Land,One of those films no one seems to know about with a great cast.
A Bronx Tale,His director's debut & one of the best films ever based in NY.

Re: Robert DeNiro Underrated Movies

i'm not so sure that his performance in 'Brazil' was underrated... but more just... awesome. he probably only totaled in like 5 minutes of screen time.

'1900', on the other hand.. now that was an uncanny film. Gerard Depardieu stole the show, but De Niro was still marvelous.

definitely not underrated, but for the sake of mentioning De Niro's many great performances, his role in The Deer Hunter (though understandably overshadowed by Walken) was quite a gem.

Is "Cape Fear" underrated though on any level? The reviews were great, as was for his performance. And he got an Oscar nomination.

I've always enjoyed Midnight Run. Might have to track down the DVD for it. Haven't seen it in years.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly. He played Pupkin like a sitcom distillation of Jake LaMotta and Bickle, and it terrified me. That movie in general is one of the most underrated around (even though RT has it at 92% I believe). People like it but keep it at arm's length, when I'd put it easily in Scorsese's top 5.
