WEEKEND BOX OFFICE (1/9/08-1/11/09)"Get off my lawn.(And to a theater!)" edition

Looks like Gran torino made #10 million on Friday for a probable #30 million opening weekend in wide release for a $41 million+ total so far. This would mark the best opening in Eastwood's history.
The garbage known as Bride wars made over $7 million Friday and will do around $21 million for the weekend.
The Unborn (whatever the hell that even is) made over $7 million on Friday as well and should get to around $18 million for the weekend:

Go Gran Torino! Great movie, glad to see people are choosing it over Bride Wars... and especially over The Unborn. Goyer can't direct for shit. Fool me once, shame on me (Blade Trinity). Fool me twice (The Invisible)...can't get fooled again.

And yet it still made (an estimated) $18m for the weekend, lol. I was hoping it would open like The Invisible...

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/daily/c...9-01-09&p=.htm
Box office mojo has Gran Torino at $9.6 million for Friday and surprisingly The Unborn at no. 2 with $8.15 million and Bride Wars at No. 3 with 8.1 million.
Hopefully this isn't the only time this weekend WB comes out on top over Fox (cough-Watchmen-cough) . Still those are pretty damn good openings for the top 3 films it seems like for this weekend in January.
Next weekend things look like they'll start to get really crowded again though. I can't freakin believe Sony plans on putting that Paul Blart shit in over 3,000 screens. Wonder if it'll break any records (probably Delgo's) for lowest PTA's.

I really liked Gran Torino.

That's a great film and I'm glad it's doing well.

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend...wknd=02&p=.htm
Gran Torino no. 1 with $29 million
Bride Wars no. 2 with $21.5 million
The Unborn no. 3 with $21 million

Gran TOrino only cost like $25 million (plus probably another $25 million at least to market) so looks like this is going to be quite a nice little hit for WB.

Yep, there were also fairly large snow storms up here in the Northeast which probably affected the numbers down a little as well.

Looks like Valkyrie is going to turn a nice profit (with international box office and DVD/Blu Ray totals added in).

And I really want to see Gran Torino, but may wait for the Blu Ray (since I would probably buy it anyway, and the Blu Ray will be cheaper than 2 tickets & gas).

Why is Slumdog Millionaire still only playing in 600 theaters?

That one will actually probably only break even... they spent a lot to market it I read. (so, actual cost at least 125 mill...) I'd imagine it'll gross 200mill or so worldwide, so... not a disaster like many predicted, just not a big hit.

I think if the total cost of a motion picture is $125 million and it makes $200 million worldwide before hitting DVD I wouldn't be calling that breaking even. I'd call that a hit.

Yeah, I don't think any studio would be dissapointed about making a $75 million profit after the budget/advertising is made back, especially when they probably spent the last year wondering if anybody would actually show up to see this Tom Cruise war movie. It turns out that people did and I'm sure they're happy.

I'm sure Slumdog will expand once Oscar nominations are announced.

Went out on a 2nd date to see "The Unborn". The girl that I was with said it was Ok.
My Review:
Wow this has got to be the funniest movie that I have seen in a long time. It was just non-stop slapstick comedy. Whats that you Say? Its a Horror Movie???? Well in that case then has got to be the worst movie that I have seen in a long time(and I found Gigli to be enjoyable).

The general rule of thumb is a film has to make back 300% of it's total cost before it becomes profitable. Valkyrie would need to make $375 million theatrically to break even. It'll definitely be profitable, but it will take it's home video release.

I doubt it cost even that much. The film is little more than a drama played out in a few rooms. Letters from Iwo Jima reportedly cost $12-15 million. I have a hard time believing Gran Torino cost any more. I suspect the budget has been inflated given its Oscar campaign (the same thing happened with Million Dollar Baby). At any rate none of this is meant to detract from the accomplishment of Eastwood or his film. Having seen Gran Torino it instantly finds a spot amongst Eastwood's top three movies. It's a stunner of a film & I'm delighted at its box office success.

Eastwood's career is without parallel. Who else has maintained leading man status at nearly 80 years of age? Who else could convincingly kick the crap out of a gangbanger as Eastwood does here & not have audiences falling about with laughter at the sight? Who else had what looks to be his biggest ever box office hit at an age when most people have long since retired? It's as if the usual rules don't seem to apply to Clint!

By that rule Benjamin Button would need to make like $700 million before it become profitable.

I believe the three times rule is just for the production budget, therefore covering marketing costs. So, low to mid 200's for Valkyrie. I guess they spent 60 on marketing...so the cost was 135. Cruise must've taken a back-end deal, I can't imagine he got 20-25 million out of a 75 million budget.

if that 3x rule were the norm, we wouldn't see any movies that cost more than 40 million dollars... like ever.

$102,314,283 (USA) Actually the biggest Eastwood movie is In The Line of Fire, which came out after Unforgiven.

To be honest, it depends on the film, but the rule is usually double the production budget.

So, say for example, we have a film like Gran Torino.

Production Budget: $25 million.
Prints: $10 million.
Advertising: I'm lowballing $5-10 million as Warner hasn't done much.

At this point, Warner has spent $40-45 million getting Gran Torino from an idea to audiences.

Theaters get a big percentage from a film's opening weekend. The name of the game is to get the movie to last long in theaters as the percentage the theater gets to keep will drop as time progresses. When it comes to a smaller release like Gran Torino, the percentages are a little bit skewed as the film just expanded wide after being in limited for almost two months.

Warner will be in the black for Gran Torino by next weekend.

That sounds about right, if you count only its budget. Half of the gross (very roughly) is taken before the studio get its. And P&A is usually about the cost of the budget (very, very rough rule of thumb).

So if a movie cost $20MM, it also cost $20MM to advertise. If it makes $80MM theatrically, $40MM goes to the studio and it breaks even.

I believe that's fitprod's logic.
