View Full Version : Any deals on the Strip?

The wife and kids are taking me to Vegas this summer for my 50th. It's just going to be a quickie for a couple days in July. The kids have never been there so I'd like to stay on the strip centrally located for easy walking. I've heard the casinos are hurting and have gotten a few emails from Mirage and Bellagio. Any other deals out there?

It's a little early for July deals to show up but I did find these :

NYNY, 30% off through Aug 2009, rooms $72 most of July -
https://reservations.mgmmirage.com/bookingengine.aspx?pid=010&host=promo&code=brgeb5&show=rates

Luxor, July most nights $68, $30.00 Food Dining Credit for Tender our Steakhouse Restaurant*, 2 for 1 Lunch Buffet at MORE*, 2 for 1 Admission to The SPA at Luxor*
Offer based on double occupancy. This special offer is available for online reservations only and may not be reserved by telephone.
https://reservations.mgmmirage.com/bookingengine.aspx?host=promo&pid=lux&code=UGETD

You'll probably find much better deals by waiting until April or May.

The best deals I've found for hotel rooms was in this forum:
http://www.vegasmessageboard.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=13

But as NC-36 said, it's still a bit early for July deals. Start looking periodically starting April or so.

The best way to do this is to catch an offer then book it.

Then keep looking, trying to improve on that offer. If you can find something better, cancel the first one, book the new one.

You think waiting will get me better rates?

Any hotels have a modest 2 bedroom suite? I'm not looking for anything with square footage, we're only there 2 nights. But if a small 2 bedroom suite is the same as 2 adjoining rooms I'd go that way.

Anything resembling what you want will cost 3-5 times the single room rate. You're better off getting 2 rooms.

And yeah, wait until spring and you will be waist deep in better offers.

Thanks guys, I would have guessed the earlier the better but if you think they'll get better I'll wait.

I'll get 2 rooms adjoining rooms. I thought some of them had those 2 bedroom suites for about the same as 2 rooms but with a living room and kitchen. Mirage has some but theyare bigger than my first apartment and cost more than the months rent at the time.

When you find a room deal, don't book it through the website that has it. Print the deal, save the url and call the hotel's 1-800 reservation number directly.

Most discount sites require full payment for the stay upfront, and if you need to cancel you probably will not get all (or any) of your money back. The hotel will almost (99%) always match whatever price you find somewhere else provided you can prove it. Scorcho's Expedia deal in the other thread is the exception - nobody is gonna match $11 for a 3-night stay. The hotel also only requires the first night to be paid in advance. If you have to cancel, the hotel needs just 48 hours notice and you get a full refund for your one prepaid night.

Yup...I always prefer to book directly thru the hotel. And take a look at their cancel policy. Usually you can cancel with 24 or 48 hours notice. So I find a deal, book early and if another deal comes along, rebook.

Another advantage of booking directly thru the hotel is you can try the $20 trick on check in. I might work if you book directly. It will not work if you book thru a discount site. Well it shouldn't work, I'm not saying it never has.

As a regular Vegas goer, the deals above are very good. Only time I have seen better then these recent deals was right after 9/11.

I probably end up there every couple years on average however most of my trips have been for business so I have to take the flights and stay at the place that best suits the conference I'm attending.

I already booked my flights because I was using Frequent Flier miles and wanted to make sure I could use the points.

I've stayed at the Mirage, Flamingo, Riviera, Paris and a few more I don't remeber right now. The gambling isn't that important. We're going with the kids who are adults but under 21. Rusty is 20 and Audrey is 18, oh wait. I meant my son is 20 and daughter is 18 so it's mostly just to let them see what they've been seeing the movies, hang out by the pool, take a ride to Hoover Dam that kind of stuff. I'll do a little gambling late at night or early in the morning. Like when they're at breakfast I'll quick run to the roulette table and drop $100 on one spin. :D

Since it's mostly sightseeing I don't mind spending a little more to get an nice room. Plus when we go to Vegas I actually get some sex from my wife hence the 2 room requirement.

I just got one for Bill's - good through May. $87/weekend night, $39/weekday night

I agree - it's probably too early for summer deals. You can always book something though right now and then cancel and rebook or book elsewhere if something better comes up (book through the hotel as suggested).

Check out NYNY. It is one of my favorite places to stay. The South end offers a TON to do within an easy walk. Even if hot when you go, you can walk between Excalibur to Luxor to Mandalay bay all without stepping outside. Also MGM is right across the street. This area offers lots of places to eat, good shows, and stuff for your kids.

Plus, I have gotten really good rates at NYNY. Highly recommended.

I'm surprised how low rates are Super Bowl weekend. I think I have to go to San Diego the week before so I might pop through Vegas for that Friday night before returning back east.

Yes, the economy is hurting bad in Vegas so the deals are aplenty right now. The thing is, though, is that Vegas usually looks no further than about 3 months ahead as far as giving deals out (much like the airline industry) since things can change so much so quickly. They don't to give out dirt cheap rooms in say, July, when there's still a decent chance the economy could uptick by then and thus, they could have made a lot more on their rooms.

And someone made a good point I forgot to mention -- booking through discount sites like expedia, orbitz, etc. takes away any and all flexibility you have with $20 tip tricks, room upgrades, extending/shortening stays, etc. There used to be a time when going through these sites was much more advantageous than hotel direct -- those times are mostly gone.

Continue to peruse the vegasmessageboard link I posted above -- that's where I start with all my room offers.

I've been through NYNY numerous times but never stayed there. The rooms don't have to be great but I do want modern. I know most of the hotels have been modernizing their rooms. Last year Paris' rooms were gorgeous plus a nice LCD TV. I'll make sure I check out NYNY.

The reason I asked now is because I know the hotels are hurting so I figured they're trying to get some people in the door. Later in the year they may not be so desperate. I'm trying to be optimistic that the economy wil turn around quickly.

Just booked a room at Flamingo for $60+tax Friday the 30th. Hard to believe that's the price for a Friday night SB weekend. I originally had $84+tax at Luxor but cancelled that.

Do your wife, your kids, and yourself a favor and see The Mac King Comedy Magic Show at Harrah's, the best matinee in town. Casino greeters are handing out 2-4-1 with the purchase of drink tickets so you can bring the price down quite a bit. The show is hilarious, the magic is top-notch and Mac King is well-respected in the magicians' community, and who knows - your kids may end up onstage to help with one of the tricks. I've seen him three times and have never been disappointed.

My wife and I were brought up onstage during our honeymoon last summer because I raised my hand when he asked if there were any the newlyweds in the house. We got to help him with one of his most iconic tricks, the Invisible Cloak. :)

After this next trip I'll have enough to cross into Platinum level and then I can talk down to you. ;)

FWIW, I'm even showing comp days at Harrah's, Flamingo, and the Rio too, but primarily during the week.

They're really hurting there -- handing out free rooms like they're candy just to get people to gamble/dine/see shows/shop. Which is what should be done all along since Vegas needs to realize that often times the difference between me going to Vegas and not going is the room price.

If I look it up and I see rooms for $0-50, I'm 500% more prone on booking a trip compared to when they're $100-150.

Harrah's Total Rewards members of all tiers can book some awesome deals online through the end of 2009 btw. After 4 hours of play at Flamingo Friday, a lot of weekday (and a few weekend) comp days for Rio, Flamingo, Harrah's and Bally's showed up for me too through the Spring. I'll probably be doing 3-4 days in late May/early June.

The thing that sucks about Harrah's properties now is the 6-5 blackjack (unless you play 25+ tables). I didn't play any blackjack at Flamingo or Bill's Friday, which is a first for me. I went over to Bellagio to play since they had $10 tables at 3-2.

El Scorcho
02-03-09, 02:11 PM
I don't particularly care about the 6/5 blackjack games since, well, I never get blackjacks. :)

pedagogue
02-03-09, 04:35 PM
6/5 definitely stinks, but what can ya do?

El Scorcho
02-03-09, 05:25 PM
Meh, 6/5 blackjack pay shifts the house edge from 0.6% to 2.0%.

At a $10 table getting 60 hands per hour (and sticking to min bets only), it's only going to cost you $12 to play instead of $3.60 -- less than 1 bet in that entire hour.

It's definitely not preferred nor irrelevant, but being on the good side of variance for that 1 hour will be much more important to your bankroll than the < 1 bet difference the 6/5 rule makes.

Red Dog
02-03-09, 05:30 PM
I know it doesn't make all that much difference, even with a progressive betting approach which is what I do. It's more the principle of it. Besides, why play 6-5 when 3-2 is next door or across the street. Now if everywhere goes to 6-5, then it won't make a difference.

El Scorcho
02-03-09, 05:40 PM
