Batman Star Pat Hingle Dies
Batman actor Pat Hingle has died following a battle with leukaemia. He was 84.
Hingle, who is most famous for his role as Commissioner Gordon in Batman and the franchise's three sequels, passed away at his home in Carolina Beach, North Carolina on Saturday.
The veteran actor kicked off his career in 1948, and was ready to hit the Hollywood big time after landing the title role in 1960 movie Elmer Gantry.
But Hingle's acting dreams were sidelined after he fell down an elevator shaft and was forced to give up the part in order to recover from his horrific injuries. Actor Burt Lancaster was subsequently given the role.
He restarted his career playing Warren Beatty's father in 1961 film Splendor in the Grass.
Hingle many film credits include Brewster's Millions, Baby Boom and The Quick and the Dead, before playing Gotham's police chief in Tim Burton's 1989 adaptation of the caped crusader comic strip.
He is the only actor alongside Michael Gough - who plays Bruce Wayne's butler Alfred - to star in all four of the original Batman movies.

Before, during and after his BATMAN appearances, he had an incredible career on stage, and was in the original Broadway cast of CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF, among others. I am sure he would want to be remembered for his theater work at least as much as for his pop TV and movie appearances, so here goes - thank you for all these Broadway performances, Pat Hingle:

Even though Gary Oldman owns the role, I always liked him as Commissioner Gordon in the first 3 Batmans(let's pretend the 4th never happened).

After Commissioner Gordon, I always think of him as Gus from his guest appearance on Cheers. I still enjoy the bit where Norm sits down and orders a beer, they say hi to each other and it takes a moment before Norm realizes, "Hey! Gus is back!"

A recurring minor role in Batman movies are the least of his accomplishments. I'll always remember his chilling musings on the less orthodox uses for oranges in The Grifters, and his fiery turn as Warren Beatty's dad in Splendor in the Grass.

The first movie I think about when I think about Pat Hingle is Hang 'Em High. Man, what a performance! He had the ability to be comedic and dramatic at the same time.
The other Pat Hingle performance that I think of is when he made a guest appearance on M*A*S*H. He played Colonel Daniel Webster Tucker in the episode April Fools, and was absolutely BRILLIANT. That may be my favorite performance that I've seen him give.
I loved Pat Hingle. Still do. He will be missed. (I'll bet Clint shed a tear or three when he heard the news.)
