Anyone seen this yet? It's already playing in HK and has gotten positive reviews.

I have a screener of it that I haven't had a chance to watch yet. It's got Donnie Yen, so I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

I do know that a sequel has been greenlit (already) and Bruce Lee will have a major part. Or, wait, not Bruce Lee but somebody playing Bruce Lee. Just figured i'd clear that up as to not get any hopes up.

This looks very enjoyable...it kinda reminds me of Jet Li's "Fearless".

This looks awesome! Can't wait! Does Bruce Lee (the character) make a cameo in it?

When did he die?

Since the 70's I've always thought it was Yip. He died a year before Bruce Lee.

You take that back! The only thing better than SPL was Flashpoint and that wasn't even as good as SPL (despite having insanely intense fights and a solid car chase).

SPL what that all about?

Anyone know when this is going to get a release in the states and if it'll be theatrical or DTV?

It's actually events that happen after Flashpoint. Their not related except that Donnie plays the same character. It's known as Kill Zone in the States.

SPL what that all about?

SPL is an action crime drama about a group of cops who break the law in order to take down a notorious crime lord portrayed by Sammo Hung. It should be a mindless action movie but the characters are fairly well fleshed out and the film is governed by a central theme of karma. The dramatic parts are help by a solid cast lead by Simon Yam. It also features some very intense action sequences that are choreographed and directed by Donnie Yen himself. Although his greatly publisized final fight with Sammo Hung is well... great... to me the standout fight is the fight in the alley between Donnie Yen and Jing Wu.

That's not true. People mistakenly believe that Flashpoint is a prequel to SPL but the films are unrelated. Donnie Yen was meant to be gunned down at the end of Flashpoint but the studio felt that would be a rehash of SPL since he would have been killed at the end of both films.

The film was however marketed as a prequel (at least in the US it was) so think of it like the Dollars Trilogy. In each film Clint Eastwood plays a different character (Monco, Blondie, and one other who I always forget) but for the US release he was marketed as The Man With No Name during the release of all three films.

So, your saying their not related even though he plays Inspector Ma in both films? It's been awhile since I've seen both so my memory is a little hazy. Anyways prequel or not the one thing that bothered me was that he was driving a BMW SUV that wasn't around in 1997 where the story takes place.

Both character's are called Ma but their respective full names (which I don't recall) are different. Basically, it's as if the same actor did two movies where he's Officer Joe but in one he's Joe Jenkins and the other he's Joe Smith.

As for the anachronistic automobiles, in the audio commentary of the Region 1 DVD, Donnie Yen revealed that setting Flashpoint before Hong Kong was returned to China was a last minute decision. In fact, based on the audio commentary, in some places the film was even released without the revised date text which led to Bey Logan's (the other guy doing the audio commentary) wife to question why the judge was wearing a wig. That would only have happened before the changeover not after (when the film was originally meant to take place).

Donnie Yen is truly ageless isn't he? Man doesn't even get a wrinkle...

I didn't think part one was all that great- entertaining but predictably routine. The fighting was good but the story was bland, rah-rah, goody-goody, biopic stuff. Wish they would have aimed for more realism and depth in the drama departed rather than go with the ho-hum commercial beats.
