Just wanted to thank everyone for their contributions in 2008. I enjoyed some wonderful bargains on this site.
I personally found the Amazon "Buy 10 Blu Rays get $100 dollars off" to be my personal favorite for 2008 and even used some of the movie cash.
I know there there were other good ones too...some I know I missed.
Happy New Year to you all.

The deals that stand out in my mind were-

the 10 Blu-rays at Amazon that you have already mentioned

the 80% off glitch at borders.com

the 6 seasons of 24 for under $30 at Best Buy

all of the clearance deals on anime at rightstuf.com

the buy 2, get 1 free on all Blu-rays at Amazon

the Blu-ray BOGO deals at Columbia House(plus all of the glitches at CH)

My favorite, so far, is simpler by far.

Buy 2 blu-ray for $30 at Best Buy, which got me the 5-disc Blade Runner and Pan's Labyrinth for $15 each. (Which are the first blu-rays I ever purchased - the deal was THAT good).

Yeah with that 80% off glitch at Borders.com I got the Twilight Zone Complete Collection for about $50. I never thought I'd own that.

I loved that $10 off $10 Blockbuster.com coupon too. I spun a lot of those for credit after watching them.

I'm sure there's plenty more I can't remember.

Mine's gaming related:

Top Dog:
1. Rock Band 2 for $109 at TRU + $25 gift card
(plus I used a $10 coupon, making the entire bundle $75 and tax which was $115 off SRP or $15 more than the price of the game disc alone)

Runner up:
2. Amazon B2G1 on Blu
the one where anything went, including pre-orders. Nearly every major release this fall that I wanted I pre-ordered during that sale.

The Sony BDP-S350 for $179 on Thanksgiving at K-Mart. And to the make deal sweeter, I paid for it using funds made from thinning out my DVD inventory, so it was like getting it for free.

Big Lots Update -- 2008 Edition (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-bargains/533552-big-lots-update-part-2-master-list-titles-seen.html). An awesome congenial effort from all involved.:up:

Also, the Target $5.50/$7.50 Special Edition set reports were phenomenal, as well as the Blockbuster $10 off $10 and $7.99 HD-DVD deals.

- The Borders 80% off is probably tops - I got the WWE Summerslam Anthology for $40, the cheapest it's been and probably will ever be was $80-100.

- The 24 deal at Best Buy. Since I had all the seasons but 6, I only got the S1 SE and Season 6...and had a RZ certificate as well.

- Blockbuster $10 off $10 and free shipping: sweeeeeeeeet

- Gamestop 75% off used DVDs as well as their $1.99 generic tags: I got a few WWE DVDs for $2-3 each, including a rare collector's edition of one that sells on eBay for $50+!

- Circuit City Venture Bros. deal

- the Pepsi Stuff glitch

12-31-08, 12:48 PM
I suck...The glitches rarely work for me, and I couldnt get to TRU to do the RB2 deal/glitch.
Best deal I actually got was the Circuit City Venture Brothers 2-pack for 12.00; I ordered something else, got free shipping, returned the something else (this was not planned, I later found that same thing cheaper elsewhere), kept free shipping, and sold Vol 2 (which I already had) for 15.00, so I made a little money on it.
Anyway, yes, thanks to all for sharing their deal finds, and best wishes for a happy and deal-filled new year.

80gb PS3 plus remote, PotC trilogy in Blu-Ray, and LittleBigPlanet for $199 thanks to the Amazon voting deal.

I also got in on the RB2 deal mentioned above, which was pretty sweet in and of itself.

1. The 24 deal...the reason I found the site...enough said.
2. Blockbuster's 10 off 10...I think I have about 20 blockbuster.com accounts now..lol

I would add the 80% borders glitch (and the $5 off $5 glitch...surprised nobody has mentioned) if I had been successful. But all I got from those deals were cancelled orders and alot of time wasted...but it still was fun chatting with everyone while trying to take advantage. Borders has to go down as the worst website I've ever seen. For some reason I just received a $50 gc from them by mistake a few weeks ago, so I can't be too upset. Good on those that got in on the deals, but I'm done with them unless I get more free gift cards.

80% Borders.com glitch? Crap where was I?!?!

Best deal I can probably remember was the hit on the closing Hollywood Video Store. Got lucky with all their dvds marked $.25 and $.50. Usually not a huge fan of used dvds, but I couldn't pass that up.

The eBay "Deal of the Day" that got me a Sony BDP550 for $229 was pretty memorable for me.

Easily the Amazon $100 off 10 Blu-rays deal. I got in early and got the extra $15 off for the six Bond movies. 10 GOOD Blu-rays for $62? Ridiculous.

Runner-up would be the Amazon $100 off a Blu-ray player and 4 movies. Picked up the Panasonic BD35 and 4 discs for a little over $200. Plus, Panasonic has the rebate for the two free Disney flicks if you buy the BD35.

So, in the span of a week I spent just under $270 for an excellent player and 16 movies. Many thanks to the original posters of both deals!!!

That whole Best Buy sale with the coupon is probably the best deal i have ever gotten on these boards (among some spectacular others of course)!

Went to BB, found 3 seasons, asked, got the other 3 (including S1 tin case), saw another fellow trying to do the same deal, but fell short on all seasons, walked out very happy. most still unopened however :(

#1: $200 off Blu-Ray player when you buy 8 Blu-Rays (which I also got at B2G1F)

I also commend Amazon for their $10 off $50 BML coupon, which I used about 30 times...

Mine wasn't so much a particular dvd deal, but you all here have been amazingly helpful to me as I've endeavored over the past two years to give my husband an awesome home theatre, big-screen, high-def/Blu-Ray setup - I truly could not have done it without the wonderful, insightful input I've received from you all. (Of course, the dvd deals are helping now more than ever, too, since we've gone Blu!)

My Favorite Deals of the Year (in order)

1. Blockbuster $10 off $10 and Free Shipping

2. Columbia House Blu-ray B1G1 + Free Shipping

3. iNetVideo HD-DVD Clearance with Free Shipping

3. Amazon $100 off 10 Blu-ray's Deal

4. Big Lots ($2/$3 titles, Woody Allen sets)

6. ADV Thanksgiving Sale

7. Various Amazon.com Deal of the Day's

8. Adventures of Brisco County Jr. for $22.14 (and some other rather good Deep Discount sales)

I can't even remember if this was this year or last year, but the clearance HD-DVD's at Hollywood Video was one of my favorite sales. I picked up a TON of movies for $5-8 that way and many began to be much more difficult to find afterwards and never even went down in price that much. Sweet deal!

And to note: I didn't get to experience the 24 Deal as every single Best Buy I went to (as well as stores I tried price-matching) ALL turned me down on reason that it was "TOO GOOD OF A DEAL". I tried desperately and wound up with nothing here.... but oh well. You win some and lose some, I guess.

Bob_F1

As others mentioned, the coupon deal at Best Buy for the season sets of 24 was my best deal of the year. The total for all six season sets was less than $30 and then those same purchases resulted in $10 in RewardZone certificates. So the net cost for six seasons was less than $20. Pretty incredible.

My 2 best deals of the year were both cd, rather then dvd:

1. The BMG club code from last summer that priced box sets at under $10
2. The recent BMG D8E1 code that priced 2 cd sets at $4.78.

Also had several great dvd box set deals from DD & the Bergman Box from Oldies.com

Thanks to all here for the tips & to Dr X for the BMG Club codes!

I wasn't able to get Tropic Thunder 2-disc at Circuit City for $6.99, but I was able to get Walmart to price match that online sale, in-store. I was also particularly happy to snag The Christopher Reeve Superman Collection at Best Buy for $16.99 before Thanksgiving, and Psych: The Complete Second Season for $13.99 from Amazon on Turkey Day. Most recently, because of this forum, I knew to show up at Walmart the day after Christmas to find the last remaining copy of The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance for $5. My sincere thanks to all who have contributed to these (and other) cost-saving purchases, and I hope that at some point in 2009 I can help return the favor.

i didn't get in on the 24 deal, so i'll have to go with $100 of 10 Blu-Ray discs, $22.14 for Brisco County Jr.

Gee, I feel a little ripped off for getting Brisco County, Jr. for $24.99. Oh what the heck, that's still a great deal.
Also, Avengers Complete Emma Peel Collection for $30.38 and the Complete Jeeves & Wooster for $24.30.

But, outside of DVDs, I found an Absolute Watchmen for $65 at my local comics shop when it was out of print. The same day, I found another one at my local Borders, but sans shrink wrap. With a 30% off coupon, that one came to $52.50. Then I ebayed the first copy for $110 (although that was a little disappointing, I thought it would go higher), so it works out that I got an Absolute Watchmen for $7.50. And since it was already unwrapped, I didn't have the dilemma of opening it myself.

You know, it's hard to remember. Was it this year that the first ten star trek movies set from fye for like 30 bucks happened or last?

But I liked the amazon gold box deal of lost 1-3 plus signing up for bill me later = 16.33 or something per lost season. I've never seen Lost for that low.

I probably gotta say though that my greatest finds this year were at yard sales! I think my wife found the complete series of Sex In the City (and promptly resold) for like 10 or 15 bucks), Godfather collection for like 10 bucks, Last season of Frasier brand new for like 2 bucks (we'll probably resell), One of the disney cartoon movies for like 2 bucks, etc. etc.

I didn't get in on as many deals as many here because I wasn't interested or didn't need them. I have all the Bond flicks and had only watched two of them, so double-dipping on BD, even at such great prices wasn't appealing. The $100 off 10 BDs BF sale was mostly titles I already had on HD DVD, so nertz to that one. I already had the first five seasons of 24, so as killer a deal as the 6-for-$30 was, I didn't need it. It kills me that I missed the TRU Rock Band 2 deal, but somehow I just didn't see it until the day before it ended and didn't have the ad to PM anywhere by then. Drat.

Deals I DID get in on:

* 2/$15 HD DVDs blowout at Hollywood Video. Teamed up with other DVD Talkers to trade where the good stuff was and picked up a few for someone else.

* iNetVideo HD-DVD clearance with free shipping - the only good deal they had.

* The Amazon BF sales which combined killer deals with me being able to avoid having to go out in the early morning cold to wait in lines for a few items.

* More love for speedy1961 whose early ads allowed me to buy at full price and then go back for 110% PMs.

* B2G4 used BDs at a Gamestop near my work which allowed me to score 18 movies for under $6 a pop OTD.

You know, it's hard to remember. Was it this year that the first ten star trek movies set from fye for like 30 bucks happened or last?

That was def. last year around thanksgiving/xmas, I don't think it was repeated this year.

My best deals were:
1) As usual, a CH membership (all dvds $4.80 each or less, can't ever consistently beat that with a bag of hammers). Best deals this year were B1G4, B1G2, and free shipping on sets plus 60% off dvds. Many boxsets for an average of less than $4.80 for each title inside. And I got a lot of titles with funcash for $2.99 or less. Plus 2 freebies from the A-List.
2) DD B1G1 Image sale. Complete Definitive Twilight Zone Collection for $101.25 (was cheaper if you had used cashback). Plus the 80's sets for $23.63 each.
3) X-Files seasons 1-9 for $9.99 each from Best Buy with Fox $10 off coupon.
4) Big Lots titles for $2 or $3 each. And boxsets: Woody Allen 2 ($13), Woody Allen 3 ($16), Fox In A Box ($10), Argentosoma ($10), Kaze No Yojimbo ($10), etc.
5) Ninja Scroll (10th Anniversary Special Edition) [$4.99 Best Buy PM'd this instead of the regular 1-disc]
6) Used (mint) Criterions from my friend Donnie for $5.00 each. The Ice Storm, Vengeance Is Mine, Army Of Shadows.
7) Warner B1G1 boxset sale @ DD. Film Noir Classic Collection Vol.4 and Gangsters Collection Vol.2 for $14.99 each.
8) HD DVDs all for under $6 from dvdtalk trades and CH.
9) Random: Shopgirl [$2.49 FYE used(mint)]. The Princess Bride (Buttercup Edition) [$4.00 Walmart]. Hellboy (3-Disc) [$3.00 Big Lots]. Elizabethtown [$4.00 Walmart]. Cujo (25th Anniversary Edition) [$4.99 Best Buy(PM CC)].

I got in a few good ones...

The $100 off 10 blu-rays at Amazon was the craziest one for sure. I got in on it with the $15 off, and the prices dropped more on a few titles before they shipped, so it was even better.

I got the Bond steelbook blu-rays for $19.50 each on release day at BB. It was a great deal at the time for awesome packages. Of course, the Amazon deal blows it away, but there were no steelbooks.

The free Kung Fu Panda blu-ray from CH was awesome. Also, having Pineapple Express arrive next week for about $16 shipped will be a product of the B1G1 sale.

TV series pricing... I got in on the Stewie Head Family Guy pack at Amazon for $60, and I sold my first five volumes for more than I paid for the set, which included the sixth season as well as Blue Harvest. I also sold my five seasons of The Shield and rebought them in WS versions as well as the sixth season, making a few bucks while acquiring an extra season of my favorite show.

The ebay/live cashback got me one big Best Buy gift card that I bought with a 10% off coupon, making the price I paid below the value of the gift card (rare), and then I got more than $100 cashback from MS on a $420 gift card. The card also came loaded with about an extra $25 in funds.

Finally, the Black Friday deals at Amazon were awesome and sort of unexpected. I got Transformers, Mad Men S1, Bank Job, Flags of our Fathers and other blu-rays as well as House S3, It's Always Sunny S1, 30 Rock S1 and other DVDs.

The best I got was the 24 BestBuy deal. Others that were nice were the DD BOGO Criterion and their big boxset deal (monty python for 30 bucks etc). My local mom and pop video store getting used dvds for 4 bucks. I wish I had BR for the 100 off of 10 Amazon deal (I bought a PS3 just after with the 30% live.com deal).

$50 GCs for buying HD DVD players (Feb-April)
B1G1 Free Disney Blu-Rays at Target + 10% off + $5 off $25 coupons (March)
Big dry spell for me followed this sale... then.
$13.99 Fox & Sony Blu-rays at Fry's (Late Summer/Fall)
DD B1G1 Twilight Zone Complete Series (Late Summer)
Big Lots $2 and $2.40 DVDs (Fall and BF sales)
Amazon Thanksgiving and Black Friday Deals (BF period)

There's been such an abundance of them I can't pick any specific one as my personal favorite, but the Blockbuster $10 off $10 and Criterion BOGO definitely rank very high.

Thanks to everyone who's contributed to this forum over the past year and alerted us to all these great deals!

And remember...

Next time you mention a speedy1961 deal outside of DVDTalk (we're in the know here), be sure to mention his full username, otherwise you'll be giving credit to this (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/members/speedy.html) guy who hasn't posted in over a year and a half. Forgot to mention Live.com cashback -- 2008 award for secret bargain sauce. It worked on top of numerous deals to make them better. Result for me was $150 back... and each deal was fantastic before the cashback (B1G1 Criterion, Twilight Zone set, J&R 10.99 BRs, eBay stuff).

This one's not even close for me.

The April Columbia House buy 1 get 4 FREE was without a doubt the greatest deal I have gotten in 7 years from DVDTalk.

You could buy a blu-ray for $21 to $30 and get 4 dvds free (including Criterions). After placing around 15 orders, I wound up with

31 DVDs
13 Blu-rays
Cheers boxset
for $50 out of pocket after selling the rest on amazon.

I picked up a ton of great used Criterions for about $7 each in March from several Hollywood Video stores that went out of business.

I also got some great new Criterions and other titles for free from the Pepsi Stuff promotion.

The best deal may have been the six Dragon Dynasty titles that I got for less than $20 total from the FYE BOGO bin last month.

Thanks for the tips DVD Talkers! I hope 2009 is another great year!

Like many others on here, even though this site saves me a ton of money, it also costs me a ton of money! (I'm not complaining though.)

I would say the Complete Twilight Zone Collection at DD that came out to about $105.00 was my best buy this year.

Thanks to everyone that posts on here.

Rock Band 2 TRU deal. I PM'd at CC and while I didn't get a gift card, I managed to sell the game, an RMA'd wired RB1 guitar, mic and drum sticks for $70. That means I got a brand new RB2 wireless guitar and wireless drumset for $30.

I somehow didn't hear about B1 get 4 Columbia House deal. I've been a member for years but almost never purchase; the deals they email me are usually worse then everyday prices at BB & Amazon. Do I need to check the Columbia House thread rather then just monitoring this board?

Best Buy's deal on 24. Because the cashier was clueless, she took the $15 discount off season 1 as well. I was charged some extra tax, but didn't want to revisit the transaction to fix it. Bottom line: Seasons 1-5 of 24 out the door for $17.xx.
