Shaw Brothers on Blu Ray?

I noticed they just released one of the later Shaw Brothers movies on BD but does anyone have any information on Shaw Brothers releases coming up in the near future. Seeing those movies restored would be amazing.

Opium and the Kung-Fu Master is about to come out from BCI, and Life Gamble looks to still be on the schedule. (14 Amazons was supposed to be released on Blu-ray as part of this wave, but it looks like that's been cancelled.)

Behind the Yellow Line is available as an import if you don't mind the price tag. HKFlix carries it.

As far as I know, that's it, and that's all that's been announced.

Opium looks good. Much better than the SD. Some scenes are terrific, some less so - but it looks like different qualities of film stock were used as well.

Life Gamble looks FANTASTIC. Sharp, great color, amazing detail.

14 Amazons was going to be in the 2nd batch of titles along with Shaolin Hand Lock.

Is Celestial Pictures planning any BD re-releases of their Shaw library (it'd be nice to have consistent PQ, audio, & packaging)? i'd gladly double-dip on any of The Venoms or Gordon Liu flicks.

I'd bet it's the Celestial remasters that these companies are using. They ought to be pretty consistent despite being issued by different labels.

I haven't really heard much of anything about Opium and the Kung Fu Master or Life Gamble. What are people's thoughts about those films? Possibly worth a blind buy?

I've written a review of Opium and the Kung-Fu Master, if you're interested.

Navarre Corporation announced in December they will shut down BCI Eclipse, but they will release some titles on January 6, and Hard Gun (old Tony Jaa actioner) will be on Blu-Ray.

Where did you get Life Gamble blu-ray? The release date was 1/20/09 but as far as I know it was never in stock and still isn't in any of the etailers I know. Amazon now gives me 2/20 est ship date, but BCI Eclipse is already out of business, so does that mean I'll never get it??

Re: Shaw Brothers on Blu Ray?

Does anybody know for certain if there's any chance that Navarre will release the Blu-ray version of Life Gamble or are we out of luck on this? I noticed that only the SD version was released.

Re: Shaw Brothers on Blu Ray?

Boxer From Shantung just released on a region-free blu in Hong Kong. Got it on order--one of my favorite Shaws! John Woo was an assistant on this, and it's clear it influenced him.

Re: Shaw Brothers on Blu Ray?

I don't think there's been any confirmation either way, but the 36th Chamber boxset that came out last year did have the mono tracks. Hopefully Boxer follows suit.
