SD card for Wii

I rarely start threads, mostly because most of what I want to know has already been addressed elsewhere and partly because I'm afraid of being jumped in case it has. I ran a search for "sd wii" and nothing came up, so I assume I'm in the clear on this one.

Anyway, I got my wife Guitar Hero World Tour for the Wii for Christmas, and we quickly discovered that we would want to use an SD card to store the DLC. I asked about this in the most recent WT thread, and got a suggestion, but I figured that this would be of potential interest to more Wii gamers than just those with that particular game.

I saw a 2GB Sandisk SD card labeled "for Wii" at Walmart today for $14.88. Has anyone used this, and if so, how would you rate it? We've bought third-party memory cards before and occasionally lost data, so I'm leery of paying for an SD card without knowing what the best we can get is.

I think it's okay. After all, it's Sandisk who I thought invented SD cards. Anything by Sandisk I would highly recommend.

A regular Sandisk SD card works exactly the same as the one labeled for Wii. Whichever you find cheaper is the best way to go.

I just got a cheap sandisk one (non-wii labelled) it was much cheaper than the ones you'll find in the Wii section of stores. I just backed up my VC and saves on it, really haven't used it otherwise.

For DLC, what tends to be the file size? Curious how many songs I can jam on one of these.

Any ideas on the max size SD card the Wii will accept?

I believe 2GB is the limit but I could be wrong.

No, you're right - it doesn't support 4GB SDHC cards, and 4GB non-SDHC are pretty rare and require a workaround for the Wii to use.

Is there built in memory in the Wii? I was checking my daughters and it seems that none of her game saves are on the SD card that I inserted but rather on the Wii itself. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks!

Yes, there's 512 MB of flash memory built into the Wii.

This came up in the Guitar Hero: World Tour thread, and someone said he put it at about 70 or 80 songs, I believe. If I can find the post, I'll edit this to include a link.

The Wii limits the DLC content size to a maximum of 200 "blocks," with a Wii block equaling 128KB. A 200 block Guitar Hero song would be about 6 minutes long.

http://www.rockgamer.com/2008/11/18/...hendrix-songs/
http://www.wiichat.com/nintendo-wii-...lock-size.html

So a 2GB SD (2,000,000,000 bytes) card contains about 15,258 blocks, or around 76 six-minute songs. That's 457 minutes of music.

Assuming the song size is directly proportional to its length, and a slightly more reasonable average song length of 4 minutes, you could store about 114 songs on one 2GB card.

Just wanted to chime in...I have used a PNY 2gb card, a Ritek 1gb, and an A*Data 2gb in various Wiis without any issues.

And there was a PNY 2GB card at either Kmart or Walmart for $5. I can't remember which one I saw it at...
