Love Dark Knight and looking forward to Torino.

Iron Man, though? Movie of the YEAR? I love the movie, but don't think it's an awards-type flick.

They always do that - a list of the 10 movies that they thought were best, but unranked within the group.

Nice to see the easy-to-overlook Frozen River continue to get some attention. By all accounts, Melissa Leo deserves some awards season love but she will almost certainly not get much, partially because this film came and went many months ago.

Can't believe Snow angels isn't on the list but Frost/Nixon, Wall-e, and Iron Man are on it.

The AFI is great in that it's an organisation that will gladly list films that aren't really awards fare, if they really think they're the best films of the year. Knocked Up, for example, made the cut last year.

I'm glad to see Iron Man get a nod. It deserves it.

Iron Man is the better movie overall. But Dark Night has one of best actings in any movie this year.
But again, thinking about the better movie overall there are at least a couple of movies better than both of them this year.

The fact that "Wendy and Lucy" and "Gran Torino" are on it make it irrelevant to me.

They forgot "In Bruges" but it's OK, like I said they're irrelevant.

I don't know how Slumdog Millionaire wan not listed its great. So was In Bruges. I'd remove Iron man anf Wall E from that list and put them in.

It's a predictable list, pretty much like everything the AFI has done over the past 20 or so years.

I agree totally, plus it just goes to show you how bad things have got when they include 3 big budget kid's movies among the best 10 films of 2008.

You bump a 3 month old thread to bring up 2 movies that didn't make the list that aren't even eligible?

Both Slumdog and In Bruges are terrific and would be in my top 5 for 2008. Both are also not American films, making them ineligible for this list.

Don't you love how people don't understand what an AMERICAN Film Institute might list as AMERICAN? ...*sigh*

Re: AFI Best 10 Movies of 2008

To be fair, just because its the American Film Institute doesn't mean they just have to list American films. It could just as easily mean that it is based in America with all American members and they could be rating any film released in America.

That's because ANYONE (yes, even you!) can become a voting member of AFI. It's a popularity contest with some editorial control to make sure mass voting for THE LOVE GURU doesn't embarass them.

Any list with Benjamin Button on it as Best Movie of any year, is seriously lacking.
