Robert Carlyle to lead Stargate Universe
There was an old speculation thread, but this seems worthy of it's own.
Robert Carlyle is next 'Stargate' leader

Sounds like good news to me, although I suppose by starting with a bigger name they are already risking the show getting too expensive before it starts.
Robert Carlyle is next 'Stargate' leader
Robert Carlyle has been tapped as the lead in Sci Fi Channel's new series "Stargate Universe."
"SGU," the third installment in the cable channel's "Stargate" franchise, hails from "Stargate SG-1" and "Stargate Atlantis" co-creators Brad Wright and Robert Cooper, who will write and executive produce the new series.
Sci Fi Channel is expected to give the MGM TV-produced "SGU" a 20-episode order.
Production on the series is slated to begin in February in Vancouver. It is targeted to launch in the summer with a two-hour premiere.
Described as edgier, darker and younger-skewing than its predecessors, "SGU" follows a group of soldiers, scientists and civilians left to fend for themselves when forced through a Stargate after their hidden base comes under attack. The survivors, who emerge aboard an ancient ship missing in the far reaches of space, are led by Dr. David Rush (Carlyle), who works to unlock the ship's mysteries and return the group home but also might have ulterior motives.
The network had said it was looking to cast a well-known actor as Rush and fresh faces to play the rest of the ship's crew.
"Robert Carlyle brings a depth, intelligence and complexity to his roles, which will fit perfectly with the fresh, new reinvention of this franchise," Sci Fi original-programming chief Mark Stern said.
Scotland-born Carlyle, best known for his roles in "Trainspotting" and "The Full Monty," recently starred opposite Kiefer Sutherland in Fox's "24: Redemption." He is repped by Gersh, manager Jon Rubinstein and the U.K.'s Christian Hodell.

This is good news.
I read the descriptions of the remaining characters and they're all in their 20's. I'm going to be watching the show regardless, but it's getting annoying that "Space 90210" seems to be the new norm for sci-fi.

Yeah, I have been a little worried about how they keep describing it as young, so having him as a lead is a good sign.

Crud. Good news for fans of the show/series because he's good, but I'm not one of those people. I say "crud" because I had him as a choice for the new Dr. Who. He's the kind of capable character actor that would be perfect for the role.

The full cast list for Universe appears to be up now. I was surprised at the Carlyle pick, but the full list has a few more surprising additions like Ming-Na, Lou Diamond Philips and Christopher McDonald:

Heard this is probably the most expensive Stargate incarnation. Probably the reason why Sci-Fi decided they couldn't keep 2 Stargates on the air at the same time.
I will check this out though.

Yeah, it's weird. I thought half the reason they canned SG-1 and then Atlantis was because those stars became too highly paid.

Decent cast, better than I expected. I guess this means Lou Diamond Phillips is out of the running for Dr. Who though.
