Best of 2008 (Magazine, Website, etc. Edition)

I love this time of year, when everyone compiles their Best/Worst Lists, as I'm a list junkie. I figured that it would be best not to clog up the Music Talk Best of 2008 thread with the lists compiled by websites, magazines, etc.

A couple of my regular reads have already posted their lists:

The AV Club's Best Music of 2008 with the ballots cast by their contributors

PopMatters Picks: The Best Music of 2008, which is broken down by indie pop, singer-songwriter, British music, albums by women over 45, singles, world music, electronica, mixtapes, hip-hop, re-issues, metal albums, jazz, country, Americana, R&B, bluegrass, and albums.

Feel free to post lists from elsewhere and discuss how totally wrong they are. Hey, that's why I made this thread.

Paste magazine listed Volume One by She & Him as their number one album of the year (with Zooey Deschanel) I picked it up and am unimpressed so far, I hope it grows on me.

Here's their list:

http://www.pastemagazine.com/article...est-music.html

I probably haven't listened to enough this year to make a good choice, but I really liked Fleet Foxes (Fleet Foxes)

The blog Largehearted Boy does a terrific job keeping track of all these too -- every single list you can imagine here that's been put online:

Any list that has Lil' Wayne anywhere on the top albums of the year instantly loses me as a viewer. I've listened to it. It's nowhere near even the top 50 rap albums released this year.

They picked the song "Lollipop" as the #5 single, so that should tell you something. Me, I find that song just a little too subtle in its inuendo.

After briefly reading through the issue, I went by the library tonight. I haven't ever heard anything by My Morning Jacket before, but since they liked it so much, I picked it up and will check it out.

Their entire catalog is worth checking out IMHO. Great band.

NPR's All Songs Considered put out their "The Year in Music" show. No real surprises if you're a regular listener (lots of "NPR music"), but it's a good listen.

I thought I was finally done with new (to me) 2008 music, but they just had to bring Plants and Animals and Blitzen Trapper to my attention. I'll be listening to their albums today. And the completion of my '08 rankings has been pushed back even further...

I hadn't paid any attention to MMJ until hearing them this year on a podcast and really dug what I heard. I really like the new album, but I read some reviews/comments online and fans seem to say that Evil Urges doesn't "sound" like MMJ. Weird way to be introduced to them, I guess.

"Librarian" kicks all sorts of butt. Maybe I'm just biased towards my particular kink (sexy librarians and geeky girls... ), but it's a very pretty song.

I've been working my way backwards through their catalog and liking "proper" MMJ, too.

Sound Fix records has listed it's ten favourite albums of the year:

Electronic Pop Albums
Indie Rock List
Psych list
Electronica-Ambient
Techno-House

I'm looking forward to what Mixmag lists as it's favourite albums: I'll post them once I can find a copy of the December issue.

Does Sound Fix do these genre breakouts every year? I'd be interested in reading more of them, as this one in particular is among the only "published" lists I've ever come across that has some things I haven't heard and now plan to seek out.

I honestly don't know.

I just did a generic search for "dance music albums 2008" and this is what popped up - I find it a fascinating list, several I've put on my 'must listen/purchase' list as well.

Blender, the magazine Music Talk seems to love to hate, has put out their best albums and songs lists.

Likewise, Rolling Stone doffs its hat to these albums and songs.

And then there's Spin's album and song picks.

PopMatters put out their best electronica list (among several others) out after I started this thread, so I edited my first post to include it. That may be of some interest to you. Or not.

I've heard five of their ten, and while it was briefly hard to take the list seriously after seeing Girl Talk on there, this is forgiven since that Advisory Circle album definitely has my interest. Thanks for the link.

edit: PopMatters' metal list is pretty solid, too; I had no idea Jucifer put a new album out this year! Adding that to the shopping list...

Be sure to continue ignoring Metacritic's best-reviewed album!
