Music snobbism.
Here are three examples:
1. People being proud that they don't listen to "popular" music (in the Grammy Nominees thread some poster(s) said they were proud they hadn't heard any of the best album nominees).
2. People looking down to people who listen to certain music. I.e. someone laughed at me because I had Paris Hilton's "Stars Are Blind" (the song, not the album) in my iPod and there was a thread here about her second album and people laughing at anyone who thought she was any good.
3. The Coldplay suit thread.
Why is it wrong to like Paris, Britney, etc.? Music is subjective and there are all kind of tastes. Why isn't liking Paris as valid as liking The Felice Brothers? It's just different people liking different sounds.

There are certain standards. Remember Paris Hilton can't even sing. Her voice is electronically processed. There is a lack of outlets for a lot of talented people nowadays and it offends a lot a people that empty shallow corporate schlock rules the airwaves right now. So you can like Paris and Britney all you want but no ones ever going to take their music seriously.

Well Britney does have a good voice and she's a talented dancer. If she toned down the sex and studio manipulation of her voice, she'd gain more status.
I'm not necessarily saying Paris Hilton can sing without studio manipulation or that she's talented, but the end product was pleasing to my ears.
Also I think that nowadays there are more outlets than ever before, with MySpace and YouTube. Look at Lilly Allen. Put a song on YouTube, people liked it, signed a record deal. All you need is a camcorder and a PC.

I have a vast music taste, but I don't care what others think when they check out my iPod.
It might be the only iPod you'll ever pick up with Eric Clapton, Belle & Sebastian, Lil' Wayne, Ice Cube, Britney Spears, Fall Out Boy, and Paul McCartney/Wings on it...but that doesn't really make a difference to me.
*no Satriani on there though...

As I've come to realize, there's always going to be someone who's a bigger music snob than you. This is especially true with the reduced barriers to hearing new music online. I listen to what I think is good, I criticize what I think is bad, and I'm happy with that.

This goes back to an endless debate I've been having with friends for the past 5 years; just because its indie and you can't find it in Best Buy doesn't mean its good.

I have to disagree with you Deb. She has what I call a little girl's baby voice and it's so heavily processed in the stuido that I wonder what she would sound like live with just an accoustic guitar backup.

So would you say it is easy to create that type of music, or just to listen to it? Do you think that there is no talent involved in creating a catchy song that becomes popular?

I believe that what I'm into is better than whatever you are into. It doesn't matter what you are into. If you are into it and I'm not, you must be some sort of uncultured boar.
You know that thing you're into now? I was into it way before you. In fact, I can't believe you still like that thing. I've moved on.
Whatever I say and do is exactly what should be said and done. My feelings toward a subject have no comparisons nor room for debate.
