Golden Compass & Other Movies That Leave You Hanging: Are You F&@#ing Kidding Me?!?

I've just seen this movie for the first time. I like it. Very well done. I like the story. I don't pay attention to supposed "religious overtones", I just like a good story. I admit, I hadn't read much of anything about it since it came out. I knew who was in it, and I know it won an Oscar for effects. That's about it. But now, I see the ending, and I go online and find out they're not even sure if they're going to make the necessary sequels?

Are you fucking kidding me?!?

Seems to me if you're going to commit to a movie you know comes from a series of books, and put as much effort as they did into this one, wouldn't it pretty much behoove you to make the other two movies?

Am I out of line on this? Is this common practice to just leave a series hanging with no resolution, and maybe I just didn't notice? Are there other movies/series where they just made one and said "Aww, fuck it"?

Don't get me wrong. I'm not so enamored with Golden Compass that I won't live if they don't make any more, but I think it would be a shame. Again, it just seems dumb to make something you know there's several parts to and just do one.

uhm...normally there will be a sequel or a continuation cuz of it's adaped origins but...New Line doesn't want to make more that's up to them. I've yet to see the film, nor do I think I would. Not for any reason but...it just doesn't fancy me. I'm assuming the film ended with a proper ending. So it's not like it's a big deal that they just leave it like that. It's not like if for example they left the Bourne Identity as a solo film it'd destroy what was and what more could be told for Jason Bourne. If it's something like Lord of The Rings, bad example cuz they were filmed all together but let's say they were filmed separately, which NEEDS more story to obviously be told than yeah...a II and so forth would be in need.

If they had left the film with a "proper ending", do you think I would have started this thread?

At least with "The Golden Compass," you can read the books to find out what happens next.

No need to get all twisted about it. *sigh*. Just based on what I read from wikipedia, and you never know with what wiki has, seems like yeah...it's a story that can continue or it's one that leaves you to hope for the characters to succeed on their adventures. Though the former is a stronger lead in over the latter.

Seems like you're missing the a big part of the picture, which is the amount of profits from the first film in a series. This underperformed, so naturally the studio would be wary about putting out a sequel since there's a big chance that it won't make a lot of money.

They could try and anticipate that by lowering budget (like what's happening with the Narnia movies).

I'm not getting twisted about it, you just made an incorrect assumption.

Perhaps he assumed that due to the f-bombs you kept dropping in your initial post.

I'm still waiting for Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2. Why didn't they ever make another one after the success of the first one? That was what, 24 years ago?

I heard the news that a sequel to The Golden Compass was up in the air before I saw the movie, once it ended on that cliffhanger I thought that a lot of people would be upset.

Didn't that animated Lord of the Rings trilogy from the '70s get scrapped before filming Return of the King?

Yeah. Anyone here remember that stuff from way back? Still edgy about it?

I enjoyed The Golden Compass enough that it made me go out and read the books. Having read them, I'd be pretty surprised if the latter two get adapted. The uproar over the first one was nothing compared to what would happen if they continue on with any faithfulness to the source material. If the first movie was a rousing success, I can see them saying fuck it and finishing the trilogy. Don't think they'll risk it as things stand.

I feel the same way about the Golden Compass. Make another movie.

It cost 180 million to make but grossed 372 million so it did make some money

Re: Golden Compass & Other Movies That Leave You Hanging: Are You F&@#ing Kidding Me?

Just watched the Golden Compass. Wasn't aware it didn't have a ending to it. Pretty horrible movie but had a lot of potential. I'm going to check out the books it was based which I'm sure will be a 100 times better.

Yeah, Golden had a ridiculous amount of potential, it lived up to very little of it.

The bizarre thing about The Golden Compass is that they actually shot the entire first book, then New Line cut out the final three chapters from the movie so they could tack it on to the beginning of part two (The Subtle Knife) and get the flick under two hours. When the movie "flopped" (though it made nearly $400 million worldwide), New Line put the kibosh on the next installment, even though they already had a script and were ready to start production for a 2009 release, and didn't even put the footage on the DVD or give Christ Weitz the chance to do a director's cut. They shot everything in his script, then New Line basically butchered it; if he had the chance to reassemble it, I'm sure it would be pretty great.

Also, if you watch the trailers, they all include footage from the stuff that was cut. Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter reuniting and kissing in the snow, etc.

Fuckin' A. At least W.D. Richter wrote another kick ass film (which started off as a Buckaroo sequel, IIRC)...

Wonder if Warner will pull a Sony move (re: The Da Vinci Code) and release The Golden Compass Extended Cut on Blu-ray...

I recall reading in an interview that Peter David wrote and sold a script for a follow up to Big Trouble.
