Round 2: Reverse Sheep

A short game where you try to out-think other forum posters.

Rules:
<ul><li>You want to give the answer that you think will be given <i>least</i> often by other people. For example, if the question is "Name a game that has Mario in it", a terrible answer would probably be Super Mario Bros. A good answer would probably be Dr. Mario.
<li>You get one point for every person that gives the same answer as you, including yourself. For example, if you and ten other people said Super Mario Bros, all eleven of you would get 11 points. No points are given if you are the only person to say an answer.
<li>Lowest score wins.
<li>No using Google, Gamefaqs, Wikipedia, etc if you don't have to. Try to remain moral in this.
<li>Private message me your answers. Do not post them in this thread or tell anyone else.
<li>To make it easier for me to score the results, please list your answers one per line and don't number the items.
<li>Incorrect answers in reverse sheep get the number of points for the answer with the most votes + 1, making it worse than giving the worst correct answer.
<li><b>Answers are due by Wednesday, November 19th at 3PM EST</b>.</ul>

Remember, you want the answer that you think nobody will give!

Questions:
<ol><li>Name a playable character in Super Street Fighter II - The New Challengers.
<li>Name a Nintendo handheld or system that has been announced or released in North America.
<li>Name a weapon or item used in the Mario Kart series.
<li>Name a Final Fantasy game that was released in the US.
<li>Name a console series that used an official NFL or NBA license: teams, league name, players, etc. (Note: Name a specific game only if it's not part of a specific series. Madden 2005 is a wrong answer. "Madden series" is not.)
<li>Name a weapon used in Goldeneye for the N64.
<li>Name a US launch title on a Playstation system or portable.
<li>Name a released movie that is based on a video game.
<li>Name a LucasArts adventure game released between 1986 and 2000.
<li>Name a currently-announced or past Guitar Hero or Rock Band game or expansion. (Track Packs do not count).
<li>Name a Robot Master (boss villain) from the first three Mega Man games on the NES (Example: Snake Man from Mega Man 3).
<li>Name an XBLA or PSN game that has had its own thread on this forum (before today!).
<li>Name a Sonic the Hedgehog game.
<li>Name a US-released game that requires a specific controller or attachment and/or was sold with one.
<li>Name an already-released game developed by Blizzard.</ol>

Answers are due by 3PM EST, Wednesday 11/19/2008. All rules stand as decided by Jeremy. PM me for answers, obviously. (I added a day because I didn't realize Jeremy's ran over an entire weekend).

BTW - Thanks Bus for starting this thread. Any hope of resurecting the Video Game Draft now that we are a couple of years into this generation?

Number 14 is slightly unclear, the more I think about it. There are games that "ship" with a controller in one edition, but are still playable with the regular controller. This definitely affected my answer, as what I wanted to put 'shipped' with a controller, but didn't require it, and could be purchased without it. If the question is literal, and the controller is 'required', then it's a different story, because the rest of the question nullifies it.

For example...and I don't think anyone is using this one since it's the most obvious answer, let's say Guitar Hero. The game doesn't 'require' the guitar controller, it's available without it, and the controller is available separately. There are only a few games that 'require' a specific controller...it's just worded oddly.

I think that any game that shipped w/ a non-standard controller or must be played with a non-standard controller would count. You could probably come up with at least 20 different titles if you thought about it for a little while.

Yeah, my answer is definitely 'off the beaten' path, on that one.

redbill
11-19-08, 11:20 AM
hmm, I read the "or" as: a game that was sold with a specific controller.

lordwow
11-19-08, 11:29 AM
The question means two completely different things depending on where you consider the And/Or to break the sentence.

Name a US-released game that (1)requires a specific controller or attachment AND (2)was sold with one (AND = requires both to be true, both 1 and 2 must be true)

Name a US-released game that (1)requires a specific controller or attachment OR (2)was sold with one [a specific controller or attachment]. (OR means only one value must be true, either 1 or 2 must be true)

Thus a game that included a controller/attachment but did not require one is true under the OR.

I can come up with a ton, the question is whether the game REQUIRES it to be played, as in the guitar hero example. LordWow is on the right path...

I always thought most of the rhythm games allowed for play with a traditional controller. Can Guitar hero be played this way?

Well, they would both be correct since it's AND/OR.

Hmm...see, i changed my answer to that question like 5 times before submitting the PM. I came up with like 10 different ones that I felt would be more "forgotten" but all of them can be played with the standard controller, except for one, which fit the "required" part...

I can't wait until the deadline so we can start discussing. I'm dying to know what other people put for that one...and then there's the "attachment" part, which added a whole other category...

I didn't have the balls to go with steel battalion as I thought it was the most obvious choice for internet nerds like us. So, I went with Donkey Konga 2.

I initially thought of going with Taiko Drum Master. Then I thought of...in no particular order...Now, some of these don't 'require' the controller it came with.

Donkey Konga
Mario Paint
Odama
Buzz
Scene It
Samba De Amigo
NiGHTS (the original shipped with the 3d controller)
Ridge Racer with the JogCon
Virtua Cop
Virtual On (Twin Sticks!)
Steel Battalion
NES Track and Field
Diamonds to Demons (atari)
DDR
Sega Bass Fishing
etc etc.

and then settled on...Gyromite. Because it fit the "requires" component.

Then I thought "attachment"...and that started a whole other train of thought, because technically, the Sega 32X or Sega CD were attachments. Which led me to Star Wars Shadows of the Empire 64, which used the memory expansion for the N64, or something like any of the SNK games on the Saturn, which required the RAM cartridge. Also thought about the NEC Turbo-CD add-on, and even the Sega Master system converter for the Original Game Gear and for the original Genesis...and the card reader game for the gameboy...it just went on and on.

Maybe I'm nuts

lordwow
11-19-08, 05:25 PM
I don't think it was shadows of the empire that required the expansion pack (wasn't it Rogue sqaud?). Empire was a launch title.

First of all, damn you for picking the same answer I did.

Second, technically you don't need to use the robot for Gyromite. You can just press the buttons on the second gamepad to raise and lower the gates.

The fact that you both picked Gyromite is incredible. I was thinking that of all the questions, this one had the potential for the least overlap.

I think the wording of the question threw a lot of people. And I'm also betting that most of us thought "oh...everyone will pick DDR or something, they won't think that far back into gaming lore" and went to gyromite.

I'm suspecting the same thing went on with the FF game question, and the nintendo portable question (I answered Crystal Chronicles and Virtual Boy, respectively)

I have to protest. The question is sufficiently ambiguous. The Video Game is based on the MOVIE, it's not even close to being based on the book. The book and the movie themselves are very different. The VG is most certainly based on the movie version.

Not according to the wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expansion_Pak) page.

Also, without the add-on, most of Perfect Dark is inaccessible (including the single player mode). The box for Perfect Dark included the disclaimer, "Expansion Pak Required for Maximum Gameplay!"

It also appears only two games actually required it, Majora's Mask and DK64.

lordzeppelin

^ That's how I got it, from Blockbuster, IIRC. I still have the N64 box in my attic should anyone need photo proof.

Oh, and not that I care, but regarding my Goldeneye weapon answer (Watch Laser), I got it from here: http://davidwonn.kontek.net/ge007stats.html

I never played the game much but since it listed damage and ammo, I assumed you could tickle someone with it in game. Maybe not.

Interesting. IGN (http://retro.ign.com/articles/925/925096p1.html) doesn't recall that either:

The Expansion Pak, which debuted at around $50 in stores during the holiday season of 1998, was not a requirement....

So, Nintendo was smart to not require the Expansion Pak right away. It wasn't until late 1999 the Nintendo finally released a game that required the add-on to play: Donkey Kong 64. And then Nintendo did something even better -- it included the Expansion Pak in the first roll out of DK64 so no player was left behind. That is how you foster good will for an add-on. The 32X used its own series of games, splintering the audience for the add-on. Nintendo's approach was far more inclusive, waiting a year before ever thinking of making the memory booster essential.

The second (and only other) game that required the Expansion Pak was 2000's Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. Majora's Mask did not include an Expansion Pak.

The first (only?) pack in was DK64 which came out in November '99. Rogue Squadron came out in December '98.

Even at the end of the Rogue Squadron review (http://ign64.ign.com/articles/153/153964p1.html) you have:
1. Buy the 4MB Expansion Pak. Without it, you won't see Rogue anywhere near its full potential.

Well, if the OP's not around why don't we organize Reverse Sheep? I would say that Googling or using Wikipedia is OK in this round. I've purposefully tried to make the questions not too open-ended.

Round 2: Reverse Sheep

01) Name a playable character in Super Street Fighter II - The New Challengers.
02) Name a Nintendo handheld or system that has been announced or released in North America.
03) Name a weapon or item used in the Mario Kart series.
04) Name a Final Fantasy game that was released in the US.
05) Name a console series that used an official NFL or NBA license: teams, league name, players, etc. (Note: Name a specific game only if it's not part of a specific series. Madden 2005 is a wrong answer. "Madden series" is not.)
06) Name a weapon used in Goldeneye for the N64.
07) Name a US launch title on a Playstation system or portable.
08) Name a released movie that is based on a video game.
09) Name a LucasArts adventure game released between 1986 and 2000.
10) Name a currently-announced or past Guitar Hero or Rock Band game or expansion. (Track Packs do not count).
11) Name a Robot Master (boss villain) from the first three Mega Man games on the NES (Example: Snake Man from Mega Man 3).
12) Name an XBLA or PSN game that has had its own thread on this forum (before today!).
13) Name a Sonic the Hedgehog game.
14) Name a US-released game that requires a specific controller or attachment and/or was sold with one.
15) Name an already-released game developed by Blizzard.

Well, I'm not going to admit defeat on this, but the 3 boxes I have that indicate expansion pack support (Rogue Squadron, Battle for Naboo, and Majora's Mask) all say they're enhanced for it, but none of them say they include it.

It's possible they were shrink-wrapped together or something, but I can't prove.

Luckily, you can't disprove it so we can both suck it ;)

Interesting. IGN (http://retro.ign.com/articles/925/925096p1.html) doesn't recall that either:

The first (only?) pack in was DK64 which came out in November '99. Rogue Squadron came out in December '98.

Even at the end of the Rogue Squadron review (http://ign64.ign.com/articles/153/153964p1.html) you have:

Look, I'm not saying it was exclusively packed with it, or that it wasn't available separately...I'm just saying there was a packaging of RS with the Pak. It may have just been a holiday thing...We even had 2 different SKUs for the game with or without it at EB...

I used wikipedia and google copiously, since I also read the original post that said it was OK. I certainly don't know enough about video games to participate in something like this, which is why I sat out of the original game.

I'm just trying to show I'm not making shit up. not like i'm upset or anything...I mean, I placed higher than chibul, and that's a victory for me.

Besides. Wiki isn't exactly accurate for stuff like that. The launch lists don't have Soul calibur listed for the Dreamcast...

I decided to not be an ass and score people who named specific titles in a series as wrong, I just added them to the series total.

No one said: NFL/NBA 2K-series

Hey, nobody else picked it ;)

I had a brain-fart. I was like "everyone will say MAdden or NBA Live, etc. Then I started to think and completely forgot the question was only for NBA or NFL. Until now.
