I still can't figure out how Avatars make gaming better. :hscratch: Are casual gamers really attracted to those gimmicks? So instead of buying gamer pics your now going to buy clothes/costumes for your Mii? Maybe a Spartan uniform or a Marcus Fenix bandana? Not for me unless its free.

Considering the number of people willing to buy outfits for their Sackboys in LittleBigPlanet it doesn't surprise me. On top of that, people were willing to spend money on picture packs for the 360 evidentally.

It doesn't make gaming better per se, but it is something different and fun in the dashboard. Plus, some games will make use of your avatar in the way that Wii games make use of your Mii's.
I know that the new Scene-It game that came out will take your avatar and put it in the game.
I'm sure people will buy clothes, etc for them. I won't be one of them, but will download anything that is given away free. I've made my avatar and will not see myself ever going in and updating it. For me, it was a one time thing.

For me the Dashboard is a means to an end. Launch a game, play a movie, download DLC. I don't really care about making the Dashboard more fun.
That being said, I'm glad they are expanding on their core system, adding new features like Netflix Streaming, and installing games. I have the 120gb system so I'll probably install a few games I play often, like Rock Band 2, Gears of War 2, and Fallout 3.
So, :thumbsup: Microsoft. Thanks for the upcoming update!

Yeah. I have been baffled since day one as to why after spending 50-60 bucks on a game, I have to pay an extra dollar or two to get gamer pictures and themes associated with the games.

Avatars have potential, but it will never be fully realized in a consumer-friendly way. Or in a way that rewards gamers and/or dedication like achievements.
As I've said before, I would love to dress my avatar up like Ryu Hyabusa for having completed Ninja Gaiden 2, but that will never happen unless I spend 800 points. So mine will only ever use the stock or free promotional clothes and all that.
They'll be better than Miis if only for the fact they're used in a real online community where that sort of personalization can matter.

From the reviews I've read, the streaming is already in place. On Netflix, I believe you need the $8.99 option. The one with the unlimited video streaming.

I usually have my surrounds turned up so loud, the audio from the game completely drowns out any noise from the console - I can't even remember if I've ever noticed my 360's drive noise because I play my games so loudly.

That's just silly talk.. You can't seriously expect gamers to not bitch and moan about some new update to a console before they actually see what it is like for themselves. ;) Before someone thinks I'm just picking on them, I am included in the group as well. I am guilty of being upset at something gaming related that I've read/heard about without experiencing it for myself. I think it is part of being a gamer. ;)
But seriously, I don't understand some of the negative posts either. Sure, it changes the look and layout of the dashboard, but other then that, you can still play games the same old way you have before. I don't think they force you to create an avatar. There are tools and such in it that you can use or not use, your choice.

I'm another that notices the drive as really loud, mainly when playing Rock Band or Rock Band 2. Kind of strikes me as odd as I usually have the sound system up pretty loud while playing and not all games seem that loud.

It's less about the noise and more about increasing the life of the console. The fan blowing all the time, and the disc spinning like that can't be good.

I just moved my 360 to my bedroom and the fan noise is absolutely brutal. It sounds like an industrial fan.
The only other console which was louder was the Dreamcast, which tended to sound like a mix between a combine and an old dot-matrix printer.

I think when your console had the red rings you could send it in without the face plate correct? I would think that a lot of 360 case mods have slowed down as well considering the hardware problems. No. I don't care about any of it, apart from my aforementioned liking of the install to the hard drive. I do not have a gold membership. I do not because I dislike playing games online. I just do not enjoy it. So the group parties with chat is out. As it Netflix, because of the lack of gold status. The ads do not bother me, as I rarely even enter into the dashboard, beyond downloading the occasional Live game or DLC.
This update will do little for me. But for those who will get great benefit from it, I can agree that this would be something to look forward to.

So, to carry over my question from the last thread: Anyone else notice a sudden change in rapid loading of your XBLA games? My list used to take forever to show all the games, now it counts up to 80 in well under 10 seconds. I did recently upgrade to the 120 HDD, but I'm pretty sure that this only started more recently than that.

Major is doing another wave of previews for the NXE. 10,000 invites are being sent out. So if you signed up be sure to check your e-mail & spam folders you may get lucky.
i just reactiveated my Netflix account ($9 per month 1 disc/unlimited streaming) due to the convenience of this plus the release (finally) of Mac support. Seems like a pretty good deal, especially if they are adding HD. Being able to watch via the Xbox makes me a lot more likely to use it than if i had to fire up a computer. oh and they still have HD-DVDs, cool.

Well, a lot of consoles aren't hooked up to the internet and won't get the update at all, and another large percentage won't turn on the 360 on that particular day, so the ratio isn't quite that big.
You figure that the people who signed up for this are probably those that play their 360 almost every day, and are most likely to get the update on the first day. If they did 10k today, maybe 10k each of the first two days, and maybe more the next few days, it will make a dent. Even if the drop in server load is only a couple percent, it is worth it to them. There isn't really any down side.

Netflix is Live but you can't use it unless you have the NXE installed (i.e. in the preview program). Otherwise you will be able to use it starting on the 19th. $39 for Live is a pretty normal price for Amazon and Newegg. Doesn't go much lower than that.
Oh and you went so long from gaming that 360voice even quit tracking on July 8th. :lol:

You could get 2 13-month cards for 49.99 + 24.99 = $74.98 + tax. That would be very close to $39 each on Amazon/Newegg with no wait.

I absolutely love it when achievements unlock gamerpics. It is a completely underutilized perk that i <3.

If you are experiencing latent or choppy video playback while using PlayOn, you may want to modify the performance settings to a lower value. This can be especially useful if either your PC processor is a bit slow, or if you are using a home wireless network or broadband connection that is not fast enough. A higher performance setting will attempt to preserve the quality of the videos that are pulled in from the Internet, but will tax your computer and network more. It is recommended that you use the “Auto” setting, as this allows PlayOn to determine which quality setting works best for your setup. If the automatic setting still doesn’t work, try “Low” or “Medium” to see if this helps.

The entire "blades" interface can now be accessed by hitting the guide button. If you never want to mess with the NXE, you can do everything through there.
I think it looks pretty hot, and will be installing several games to the HDD right off the bat.

That was my problem with Netflix and PlayOn. My DSL is crap here and i only get 1.5 megs down. According to the PlayOn folks that is too slow to stream Netflix (even though i can stream it on my PC). They said that the PC can stream a lower quality feed that the PlayOn software can't get - therefore my connection chokes and the video won't show.

I'm REALLY digging the interface so far! Especially the game library. Now you can select your game in your library and theres a pane showing the downloads available for it in the marketplace without having to back out and enter the marketplace!
The Friends "list" is pretty cool now too. I can't wait to check out the party aspect but so far I'm the only one on my friends list that seems to have updated. :-(

I'm REALLY digging the interface so far! Especially the game library. Now you can select your game in your library and theres a pane showing the downloads available for it in the marketplace without having to back out and enter the marketplace!
The Friends "list" is pretty cool now too. I can't wait to check out the party aspect but so far I'm the only one on my friends list that seems to have updated. :-(

I just did and am installing Gears 2 as I type.
Did I read wrong, I thought you would be able to snap a picture of the dash kinda like on the PS3. Am I imagining that or am I missing it somewhere in the dash?
All the themes load almost instantly and fade out/into the next one as you scroll through your list. Kinda cool. Most of them are jacked up though and totally worthless with this new layout.
*edit - so how do you delete zero point games from your gamertag?

Finally got PlayOn to work, and it is AWESOME. Netflix streaming rocks. The laptop wasn't good enough to run it. Now I have a regular PC connected through wired to the router and the XBOX is connected through a wire also. Works great. I can pause, fast forward, rewind (although sometimes it hiccups back to the selection screen if I'm fast-forwarding or rewinding). Watching For Warrick finally now (I've been watching eps from S9 of CSI here and there). Well worth it the $30.
Hulu is great also.
The one thing I couldn't play was Hulu HD (Captain Horrible's Sing-A-Long). That sucks as I don't see myself upgrading equipment anytime soon.
Yeah, slim picking so far. I wonder how the friends background junk pile is determined..

If you're going to use Live for Netflix only, then I don't think it's worth the $39. The Gold membership is mainly for onine multiplayer gaming. Everything else that comes with a Gold account, including Netflix, is just gravy.

PlayOn is always hit or miss for me. I doubt I will PURCHASE the software when the trial runs out. Half the time it says No Video Available. I have it set up for both the 360 and PS3 and had similar issues.

Since A Kingdom For The Kefflings has avatar support and is available with the NXE, I'd guess that the NXE would be available at the same time as the XBLA launches, which is usually about 2-3 AM Pacific time on Wednesday. That's just a guess, though.

I currently have a 20gb Pro that doesn't have hdmi. I have a bunch of XBLA games and a ton of Rock Band content that I need to be able to access offline.
I bought a 120 GB hard drive and one of the new Arcade machines, as it has HDMI. I want to get all of my old content and eligible saves over to the new drive on the new machine. The new hard drive came with the transfer cable.
What is the best way to do this with the least amount of hassles due to DRM? Will I have to use the license transfer tool?

Use the transfer cable and software to transfer the data from hard drive to hard drive.

There are a few premium themes in the market place for 250 MS points.
They are nice looking, from what I can tell. They change various parts of the new dashboard. If you pre-ordered Gears 2 from GameStop, they gave you a download code for a premium theme.
Other themes you may have had or could download, will work, they will just not change various things in the new dashboard such as the images behind each friend in the new friends list.
I'd assume that more premium themes will come out in the future, hopefully some free, and for different games.

So, to carry over my question from the last thread: Anyone else notice a sudden change in rapid loading of your XBLA games? My list used to take forever to show all the games, now it counts up to 80 in well under 10 seconds. I did recently upgrade to the 120 HDD, but I'm pretty sure that this only started more recently than that.
I upgraded my HD to the 120 last month as well, and I've also noticed that all my XBLA games are up in less than 5 seconds. Before it would take forever for all of them to load up.

For other who are interested, they've dropped to $99.99 at Circuit City and with the $15 off $100 coupons available in store, it makes them only $85. They're $90 on clearance at Target. Of course these drops only happened after the major retailers discovered that I had already bought one off ebay.

Hrm. I'll take your word for it. I'm at work and behind a filter so this is the only forum i check during the day. Looks like it will be an upgrade to a 120 gig HDD then.

I'd probably do the transfer before the update. That way you know that your data and game saves are working before you get hit with the NXE update.
As to time it takes, depends on how much you have. I think 15 minutes is the min, but might take a ltitle longer.

I'm going to give it to my mom to give to me for Christmas plus she's going to pay me the $150 purchase price so I'm coming out $50 ahead all said.

Now I need to figure out what won't transfer as I've heard that some game saves don't. I need to research that and use my MU if possible for those.

About a month ago, they took "applications" to receive the preview of the NXE before it was released. You had to sign up with your console id while logged into the xbox.com website.
Initially, they picked people from that pool. Then, two other weeks, they picked more people to get the NXE early.
Yesterday, they decided to give it to everyone that entered into the drawing and had a valid console id. That is how people are getting it now.
If you didn't enter that drawing, or entered your console id wrong, you have to wait until tomorrow to get it.
I've had it a week so far, and it is a very nice update.

I need to upgrade my HD as well. I just have a problem paying $150 or even a $100 for a drive that small. Target is going to have a 750gb Western Digital external drive for $88 on black friday. Sure would be nice if I could just plug that thing in for use other than pictures/movies/music etc.

I need to upgrade my HD as well. I just have a problem paying $150 or even a $100 for a drive that small. Target is going to have a 750gb Western Digital external drive for $88 on black friday. Sure would be nice if I could just plug that thing in for use other than pictures/movies/music etc.

For other who are interested, they've dropped to $99.99 at Circuit City and with the $15 off $100 coupons available in store, it makes them only $85. They're $90 on clearance at Target. Of course these drops only happened after the major retailers discovered that I had already bought one off ebay.
I checked with a few Targets they were both discontinued. I checked with a local Circuit City and they still had some for 99. Is the drive being discontinued?

I can't wait to download the NXE later today, when I get home from school. I'll be installing a few games (Fallout 3, Fable 2, Banjo-Kazooie N/B and Ninja Gaiden 2) for sure, but maybe others as well.
I rented Mortal Kombat VS. DCU tonight and played it for a couple of hours. I like it. It's fun, but it's not perfect.

Edit: So what happened first was it looked like previous Updates and it took just a couple of minutes -- apparently this was just the setup application and when the console restarted it brings up another screen that installs the Update. Shows the progress bar and approximate time left . . . began at 16 min.

So this morning i updated and was trying to find where to enter my account information for Netflix. I assume i just select the big Netflix button and it prompts me for my login? It gave me an error at 6am EST. :(

Actually it gives you a Netflix page to browse to on your PC and a 5 or 6 digit code to enter on that Netflix web page(while logged in). Once you do that you are home free. It's instantaneous as well.

So does anyone else have a crappy d/l speed and could vouch that the Instant View through the 360 works for them? I get like 1.5 down and PlayOn wouldn't stream to my 360. I can Instant View things in my browser and i hope this 360 will allow me to as well.

500 - Server error
So I decided to let the system update this morning whilst getting the girls ready for school even though I said I wouldn't to avoid possible network congestion. Failed 3 times downloading before it finally took the initial update, then another 8 minutes for the real download.
Went through the opening video and through together an avatar real quick. Underwhelmed by the number of customization options at this point, but I guess we'll be getting more options constantly (http://www.videogaming247.com/2008/11/19/nxe-avatar-theme-packs-confirmed-for-next-six-months/).
I do like what little bit I saw and will explore more later tonight and I look forward to reading further impressions over the course of the day.
I do like that they have the option to delete zero gamerscore games, but I wish they'd allow the option to delete any game if you're cool with sacrificing the earned score. I'd love to get rid of that FIFA 06 I have as well as Halo 3 and Gears of War. They're just messing up my percentages and I'm not likely to increase them in the future.

There is a 'post your avatar' thread on CAG and out of the first 80 posts this is what I culled. Clothing options are a joke.

The Netflix stream quality is dependent on bandwidth. When you start a movie it checks your speed each time and gives you the best possible quality for that bandwidth. When I tried Netflix on Monday I was showing 2 bars on the network speed indicator and the quality was pretty good. Yesterday I only had 1 bar and the video quality was pure shit.
According to the Netflix website, they recommend 5mb or better for HD streams which means my 2-3mb dsl is not going to be enough.
I was watching Hulu on my 360 yesterday though and it seems to be better quality than the Netflix 360 app. I going to try watch Netflix on the 360 using the Playon program and then compare it to the new Netflix 360 app and see if there is a difference. Also, I think using Playon should still allow the Sony Pictures content to be visable. I'll try that was well.

Anyone else have issues streaming after the update? I had to redownload the file for AAC again, according to the 360, but it seems fine now. Since I am pretty sure that Netflix streaming won't be available in Canada anytime soon, it's no big deal to me.

My controller won't connect anymore to the 360. Fresh batteries, worked fine for a couple of days. The DVD playback remote works fine with it. If I turn on the remote, the green ring just flashes and flashes.
Help?
