If you've been wanting to snag the Xbox 360 wireless adapter but unwilling to stomach the incredibly steep $99 price tag, we have good news. According to GamerDeals.net, Buy.com will be hosting a sale on the peripheral starting this Sunday, January 18 at midnight (PST) and ending January 25. The WiFi adapter price will be slashed by 30%, lowering the price to a (slightly) more palatable $69.99. Sure, it's still a far cry from what typical adapters cost, but it's certainly better.
If that doesn't float your boat, Buy.com will also be offering the red wireless controller bundle -- which includes a Play & Charge Kit -- for $42.99, a significant savings over the $64.99 suggested price. GamerDeals suspects the products will likely sell out quickly, and we're inclined to agree, so you might want to start warming up your clicking finger now.
I paid more for mine, but I know a lot of you have been wanting to buy one of these. Good luck!

Just not worth it for a $20 adapter. I broke down and hardwired mine so I'm set, but the red controller with charge kit is tempting.

Got my new Dell Arcade today. Sure enough, it is a Jasper. I was surprised how much lighter the new power block is -- too bad it's not any smaller.
I'm shocked at how quiet the new one is; it's nearly silent. For that alone, I'm happy I spent the extra $$$. Too bad the white disc tray is so ugly; I can't find any custom faceplates that look good with it and I have like five of them.
______________
I called MS service to report the problem with my "repaired" 2006 model. The guy offered to do a unit replacement instead of repair (giving me someone else's old 360 instead of fixing mine). I couldn't decide if that would be any better or not. Either way, I'll probably sell or unload it, so I told him I didn't care. On one hand, I know my unit was well taken care of and never had any problems until mid-December. On the other, if I got a model with any other chipset, it would be better than my Xenon one. What would you have done?

1. do i have to have an HD tv/set-up to enjoy this gaming system? and if not i assume normal composite (Y/R/W) connection is fine.
2. what is the easiest way to connect to internet and can i use a wireless USB adapter to connect right to my modem?
i really really want "Resident Evil 5" coming up as RE 4 was my most played and beloved games on my Gamecube. i loved everything about it and loved how much i got into it and could actually finish it!
thanks for responses.

As far as #1, I'd still go with the best connection your TV has. If that's component or S-video, I'd try to do that.
If you have a wireless ethernet bridge (like the old Xbox adapter)that can be used, or you can convert a wireless router into one, with a 3rd party firmware. I'm not aware that you can use a non 360, USB adapter.

1. No but it makes a big difference. I don't own an HDTV so i bought the VGA cabling and have the 360 running to an older 19" computer monitor and it works wonderfully.
2. Honestly, if possible your best bet would be to run the ethernet cable to your 360 and hardwire it to your router. Forget messing with all the wireless stuff if possible - especially if you are wanting to game online and don't want to deal with a drop in signal quality etc.

i don't know what any of that means (hardwire). sorry. i have a modem with open ports (E2, E3, E4), but not the ethernet as the PC takes that one up.

It sounds like your modem is also a 4-port router and E2-4 are additional Ethernet ports. You should be good with any of the open ports.
No, you don't need an HDTV, the system comes with standard composite cables. Though you need to be aware that most 360 games are built around HD and that you'll get a richer experience with one, but it is by no means required.

Based on the questions you're asking, I'd try to connect it via a network cable first and make sure that works, then start doing some research on going wireless if you want to, etc.
No, an HDTV is not required. Until you see it on an HDTV, you won't know what you are missing for the most part. But again, go with the best connection your TV will support in any case.

Really? This is a known problem that was mentioned in a number of places. I originally had that problem before i went to the VGA hookup. The menu and such were obviously readable but it was the small text at the bottom of the screen in-game. I think it was the information about what button to hit to pick up weapons and the like. That sort of text.

I had a hard time reading the Dead Rising text on my SDTV and I was using the component inputs. Other than that, I'm pretty satisfied with my set-up. This was a pretty inexpensive Wal-mart (Sanyo) set that I bought 3+ years ago.

Thanks ed...I've always had DSL (1.5mb down, 512k up), but my new house that may not be an option, though cable (oddly enough) is. Time Warner goes from 2mb down, 384k up for $35 to 7mb down, 512k up for $45. It's only $10 more, but hard to justify if 384k is fine for gaming, since I don't really need over 2mb down.

Yeah, I guess that's the question - will there BE lag? I don't game online as much, so maybe it won't be a big deal. And I can afford the extra $10, but again, if there wouldn't be any noticeable lag (I mainly play CoD online), I can find better charities to donate $10 to than Time Warner. ;)

Since it's cable you can try a few days/weeks with 384 and see how it works, if you don't like you just call your cable company and they'll make the upgrade and you'll have your new speed in a few minutes. It's that simple. At least with Comcast, but TW should be the same.

Do you mean composite cables? Component cables carry hi-def signal and wouldn't have a problem, composite would be the usual yellow for video and red and white for audio versus red, blue, and green for vidoe and red and white for audio.

It took me a bit of searching to find it as well, and then when I got my Jasper, I had to search all over again. The thing that kept me from finding it is that you can't set it to auto sign in unless you are already signed in. I assumed it would just be a list of profiles, where you pick the one that you want to auto sign in, but instead, it is an option in the profile options after you sign in.
It doesn't seem like good place to put that option. They should just have a list of profiles that you can choose from in My Xbox->Settings.

I'm in the process of doing this now. I don't want to bump an old thread so I'll ask here.
I was playing Crackdown last night, after a looong time, last time was around 2007 I think so, and just for decided to look for orbs, to see where I was with that. So it seems that I have 488/500 of the green ones, and 165/300 of the hidden. It seems now it's easier to find them with the sound so loud. I also found out that it's one of those games that can't be installed to hard drive :(
So, my question: I was in the Volk area, where Mikhailov is hidden. There's one building near his boat, and in that building there are immigrants locked. There's a hidden orb there and I just can't seem able to get access there. There's an area upstairs that has an exclamation mark and it seems it should have the controls to open the doors to that place, but I just can't seem able to make it work. I've already tried with all buttons. I've tried destroying it with all kind of weapons and no luck.
I even checked Youtube, there are videos on how to get each orb, and in the video the door is open...
Does anyone remember about this? I already killed Mikhailov, and I think I still need to kill 2 bosses in Volk.

I think it's still too soon to tell. Seems like a lot of the effort in designing this was to make it cheaper to manufacture, not necessarily to help prevent RRODs. Power consumption is less, though, and it does run quieter, and the smaller size SHOULD help alleviate problems, but we'll know for sure in a few months... :)

On the cheap you can get Dead Rising, Halo 3, Burnout Paradise, Kameo (since you liked Viva), Gears of War and the Orange Box to name a few.

Sounds like you need help from the RPG crowd then. I know Fallout 3 has gotten heaps of praise along with Mass Effect. While not an RPG, Bioshock was game of the year in 07 for most. It's a first person shooter with light RPG elements. It can be had fairly cheap by now.
As for unique, it doesn't get more unique than Portal, which is in the Orange Box. Of course, you can also pick it up on the Live Marketplace now. The Orange Box is still a far better deal though since it has 4 other games included.

It costs a bit more ($20 on half.com) (http://product.half.ebay.com/_W0QQcpidZ1388856847QQprZ69717166), but you get 9 arcade games (Pac-Man: CE, Galaga: Legions, Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, Dig Dug, Xevious, Galaga, New Rally X, and Mr. Driller Online) for a total of 1800 achievement points. Plus there are the usual 30 classics included as well (no achievements & doesn't show up on your gamertag).
Actually there is a popcap collection and a couple other arcade discs as well making them all cheaper than buying from the marketplace. As pointed out though, playing off a disc sucks.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I have added them to my list.
If you didn't buy an xbox 360 arcade system, gamestop/ebgames should have the xbox arcade disk for $5. It has Pacman CE, Luxor 2, Uno, Feeding Frenzy 2 and Boom Boom Rocket. All of the games are pretty fun time killers.
Excellent! I will have to try and stop at gamestop on my way home tomorrow after work
I think you might enjoy Braid on the Xbox Marketplace as well as the sequel to Viva Pinata. Fable II might work for you as well.
I am looking to buy Fable I & II eventually. I have wanted to play Fable for years. I think I will have to keep an eye out for the old Buffy games as well.

But I can't launch a game that is installed on the hard drive, I can't play The Maw trial I downloaded, and I can't play Worms off my MU. Sign in and everything just fine. I might try a bit more, but has anyone experienced this before?

I just signed up for Netflix so I could try out the whole streaming thing. Two questions for those who have it.
1) I think I'm getting the lowest possible video quality and it looks really terrible on my 50" plasma. My current internet connection lists download speeds of 'up to 768 kbps', but I'm getting about 630 kbps. I can upgrade to 'up to 1.5 Mbps' pretty cheaply or 'up to 3.0 Mbps' for a little more. Any input on how much those would affect the quality on my tv?
2) My girlfriend has never seen Quantum Leap, so I added all five seasons to my instant queue. I went on Live to make sure they showed up and something like 3 - 8 episodes of each season are listed as 'available on disc only'. Is that common? Seems pretty fricking annoying to have 80% of the series available immediately and then have to work the missing episodes into your queue of discs to be mailed.

My red controller works fine. Buy.com has a very short return window. You have 14 days from the time they ship out the product. I had to return my first red controller to buy.com as well as the controller was defective. Maybe the red controllers have poor quality control!

Well, my XB finally got the RROD a few days ago. Manuf date was 12/05. I've had it for 2+ yrs. Anyway, called up MS directly since for some reason my Live ID was not associated with my serial number. No problems dealing with their CS. Just an FYI for everyone, they NO longer send out the coffins for a repair. They WILL send you a prepaid shipping label. So you have to find or buy your own shipping box. Dropped it off to UPS and it will go out on Monday; the wait begins.....
But of course, the impatient side of me wants to run and buy a new Arcade (I recently bought a 120gb HD so I don't need/want the Pro) and sell my orig unit when I get it back. This way I... (a) can still play games and not wait for my orig to get returned, (b) get a Jasper unit, (c) and I've wanted one with HDMI.

01-30-09, 08:04 PM
I did pretty much that. I had already bought a 120 HD, and have an original 20 GB HDD in a box. I bought an Arcade Jasper from Dell for $158 + tax. My repaired unit just came back from its second repair (and now unit swap) in Texas. I'm selling that Xenon Pro with the 20 GB HD to one of my employees for her son for $125. So for $30, I've upgraded to the Jasper, have the HDMI output (which I'm not using), have an infinitely quieter unit, got the Sega Superstar Tennis game which my daughter likes, and no longer have an old 20 GB HD cluttering up my house. Also have a full warranty for a year.
Bottom line : This strategy = WIN. Especially now that the units are so cheap at Dell. I bet I could have gotten more for the Pro on Ebay, but this is easier. As far as I know, you can advertise the returned unit as under manufacturer's warranty for 3 months, BTW.

Well couldn't figure it out so I chatted with a Dell rep and they walked me through it... $158 + tax ... $170... hmmm... tempting tempting especially since a Roku box is $120 so for $50 more you have an XBOX. My second repair was super-quick. Like one day or two tops. I had just assumed it was a console swap, as I posted above, but it turns out they really did repair mine and it seems to work fine now. I'm still selling it, but at least this time they seem to have their act together.

Oh, and if anyone is interested, Fry's is selling that 360 custom faceplate with the 32 NFL team inserts that went for $29.99 originally for only $4.99. It seems to be the only one that won't clash with the Arcade's while disc tray, but like so many faceplates, it only looks good vertically orientated

Xbox 360's HDMI Audio Fix Coming February 3 at 2AM
By Jason Chen, 3:58 PM on Mon Feb 2 2009,
The Xbox 360 HDMI audio issue is finally being fixed! There will be an Xbox LIVE update at 2AM, February 3, which will hopefully resolve any silence-over-HDMI issues people have been having since November.

Did anyone else do what I'm thinking of? OR should I just be patient and wait for mine to get fixed? :D
They sent me a shipping box just 3 weeks ago. I went online and everything was set in motion. No call necessary.
However, when UPS delivered the box to the wrong address (just down the street), I called MS and they just entered a new repair order and I was getting sent another box. Afterwards, the very next afternoon, my neighbor brings the original box that was mistakenly left at their address. It's about 5 houses down from me.
I packed my 360 in the 1st shipping box but waited for the 2nd box so that I could get the newer shipping label.
So now I have 1 extra box PLUS the box they sent my 2008 repair in.
Next time (hopefully, doesn't happen), I'll just go online and request a shipping label. Cuts down on the chances of UPS doing another mis-delivery. *sigh*

Whatever was cached will have to be re-cached. For example, Halo 3 caches a bunch of stuff when you first start up a level. You won't lose anything that isn't automatically replaced though (unless you no longer have an internet connection, in which case you wouldn't be able to get the game updates).
Before anyone asks, to do the big ol' cache clear:
- Go to system settings->Memory.
- Select the HD and press Y.
- Press X,X,Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X,X.
- Once you do this a messsage will appear saying: "This performs maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices. Do you want to continue?". Choose yes.

If the cache clear speeds things up, only to deteriorate in a month or so - hell will be raised. So everyone who tries to clear cache, make a note of the time so we can all make a case for a NXE update to clear out the bugs.

The dashboard has always seemed slow and clunky to me, even before the NXE. It takes anywhere from 15 seconds to over a minute to open most items before you can read info about them or download things.
I've got an Elite system that was purchased a bit over a year ago.
Rare has told VG247 that games will soon give players items of clothing and accessories for their 360 Avatars in the same way they hand out Gamer Points.
“In time… games will be able to give away clothes and accessories just like Achievements,” said art head Lee Musgrave.
As to which games specifically will be using Avatars in this way, the developer wouldn’t be drawn.
“We are currently working with multiple partners who have expressed interest in using Avatars,” added producer Stacey Law.
Currently, Avatars are being dressed in launch clothing, although a few free packs have been given out, such as winter hats and gloves and soccer shirts.
Avatars were added to 360 with the release of New Xbox Experience last year.

Here's a new Xbox.com update. When viewing any game's achievement page, like Rock Band 2 (http://live.xbox.com/en-US/profile/Achievements/ViewAchievementDetails.aspx?tid=%09]:dh)k%3f~x), you can click the game title at the top to be taken directly to that game's marketplace hub.

I think the clothing as rewards thing would be cool. To do that, they'll have to change the way the distribute clothing. As of now, it's just hosted on Live and not downloaded, so it can be pulled at any time. That's why I save any outfit I might like, because that's the only way I know I can keep them at present. Picked up an England football jersey!
pinata242

Nah, I think all the clothing would still be on the servers the only difference is what outfits your profile is allowed to choose. Obviously everyone will need access to the outfits if only to view what everyone else has chosen.
Otherwise my Ryu Hyabusa outfit might just be The Emperor's New Clothes and you don't want that.

Launch day Xbox 360s no longer under three-year warranty coverage
Hamza CTZ Aziz on Industry Bullshit
An anonymous e-mail hit the tips line earlier today and after placing a call with Microsoft’s technical support, we can confirm that starting February 2, all launch day Xbox 360s will no longer be covered by Microsoft’s three-year extended warranty. The warranty should have technically ended at the end of September last year, as I was told by the technical support agent.
If you’re unfortunate enough to own a launch version of the Xbox 360 and need to send it in for repairs after February 2, you’ll have two options available to you. You can either call Xbox’s support line and get the unit fixed for $119, or you can just go to Xbox’s online support page and get the unit fixed for $99, saving yourself $20.
It looks like Microsoft is attempting to cut the amount of calls they get by giving customers a “discount” by having them go through the online page. You pretty much have today and tomorrow to claim your launch Xbox 360 broken due to the Red Rings of Death to avoid paying the fee.
While we’re on the subject, how many Xbox 360s have you all gone through? I’ve gone through two so far. My first Xbox 360 (that I got shortly before Halo 3 was released) audio output died.
i bought the extended (1 year warranty) when my launch console was just shy of a year old. my warranty extends until november 2009.

Has anyone bought a Pro bundle from Dell and received the Jasper? They have a deal where you can get the Pro bundle with Endwar for $258. I can then use my EPP discount of 7%. My buddy would buy the 60gig hd from me as I already have the 120gig. So the Pro would end up costing me the same or less than the Arcade bundle.
However, I am not guaranteed I'd get a Jasper with the Pro which is what I really want in the first place. And I can't get a definitive answer from Dell reps on what their return policy is for game consoles... restocking fee, opened/unopened, cost to ship back, etc.
Leaning towards just going to BB and getting the Arcade with the Jasper. Or, does anyone have more experience with Dell and know what I can expect?
Thanks

You're right, I don't need it. Was interested because I'd be helping out my buddy with him buying the 60gig at a steep discount from retail and I'd get 3 extra games. And with him buying it from me, my cost for the Pro would actually be less than the Arcade. That's the only reason. A chrome drive would be nice but it's not that big of a deal.

Dell has one of the best return policies I have ever seen. Never had a problem returning anything and they give you a paid UPS slip to send it back. Make sure you request the return within 21 days of invoice which is the day they ship it to you. This can all be done online.

Wow. Holy shit, I hadn't turned on my 360 for a while, I only did so to download the RE5 demo, and after the new update (which took forever), the demo took WAY longer to download than anything on XBLA ever has (and it's not like I was downloading it when it got released). Seriously, things are now downloading half the speed that they used to just last month. What the hell happened? Is this their way of competing with PSN - to be just as slow? I thought paying for Live meant things could only get better, not worse.

The controls work for a console but I miss all the hotkeys that you'd have if you were playing on a pc. Especially the grouping of troops by number. The pick all troops or pick all troops on screen option is probably as good as they can make it.
