I just bought a new Xbox today, arcade verion. It was made on september 21st. How do I know if it's a Jasper?

TLwizard
12-26-08, 07:58 PM
It's not (most likely.) I think the first Jaspers were manufactured on the 21st of October.

The biggest clue however is the electrical rating on the back. If it says 12.1 then it's a jasper. If it's 14.2 (or 14.4 or something) it's a falcon.

Congrats on the xbox though!

We need a new thread. If not for the length then just because the title looks so outdated. It seems like it was years ago the NXE was released. ;)

I finally was able to make it into a GameStop and pick up the Arcade disc for $5. This is one of the best deals around, $40 worth of XBLA games for $5. And, to make it even better, I only had Uno from the list :).

Is the game of which you speak the one with PacMan CE, Feeding Frenzy, Luxor, Uno, and the fireworks game, or is there another one? (I know Namco Arcade came out recently which has Pac Man CE and Galaga Legions, that one can't be five bucks, can it?)

A newer Xbox 360 with 65nm GPU and CPU chip. It runs alot cooler and quieter than the older Xbox 360 that uses the 90nm chips. The power brick has been reduced to 150 watts.

Power consumption has been reduced too.

A gereral question about repair : When they fix the RRoD, do they replace the chipset with a newer model, the same model or do they just re-heatsick the old chipset?

When people send their units in now, are they getting their old 360s back or a newer model?

When one of my 360's went bad the CS rep tried to grill me on this. He said that the surge protector I was using should be removed and that the brick should be plugged directly into the wall since the 360 brick had its own Surge protection. He said the Brick's SP could get counteracted by my Surge Protector.

I have heard the surge protector thing too, but only in passing. It seems a little bogus to me, I would like to use a surge protector but I'm not.
I like good 3rd person view, but it's been my experience that "good" 3rd person view is relatively rare. I'm not a huge FPShooter gamer, but I'm getting to appreciate the first person view more (Oblivion and Fallout).
I didn't finish FEAR, I only got a couple chapters in, but it did have a few 'jump out at you' type scares and had a creepy atmosphere.

I don't think I've ever had a disk read error on my PS3 :scratch2:

Regarding the Xbox/NXE and my posts from long ago... unfortunately all the old problems are back (and I don't think it's related to the power strip/UPS ;)). Frequently (not as often as before though) the HD drive is not found on start up (and something new now is occasionally the movie that is in there will start playing on it's own). It still has problems shutting down fully w/o hitting the power button, and about 75% of the time after playing an "arcade" game when I try to go back to the dashboard it locks up :( :( :(

I haven't either and mine is over 2 years old. However, this complaint has become fairly frequent on the Sony Playstation forums especially among 40GB owners. You rarely hear of any other PS3 problem. Hopefully it isn't a major issue, but we thought that about PS2s and they ended up having a major problem with disc read errors. The out of warranty people this has happened to have to pay $150 for new BD drives.

Because the claim is still apparently being touted by Microsoft when people are calling about bricked 360s. There was a thread on the 1st page of the 360 forums on CAG when I posted this. And again, I haven't seen much discussion about it here even back when those articles were released.

Play Fallout 3 in 3rd person, then you'll love the FP view.

Regarding the old surge protector article... if 90% of the complaints were coming from users who plugged it directly into the wall, they'd say you have to use a surge protector. I think nearly 100% of users who complain use the system to play some form of disc, the obvious answer is to either leave it off or only play XBLA games.

Quick story. My bro got a 360 for Xmas from the rents. The parents both got us NHL 09, so I was happy about that. I walked in the door on XMas and my bro was playing it on his 360. And the first thing I saw was his 360 was set up vertically.

I was like "Dude, you should probably put that 360 horizontal, it's gonna scratch your disk."

My mom says "At Best Buy we tell people to put them that way."

Me: "It'll scratch the disk, trust me."

He pulls out the disk. It is absolutely scratched to shit. He had to get it replaced, luckily since we had 2 copies, I just let him install mine and put his crapped out disk in the drive to play.

Japanese released games are the opposite (with region free games in Japan being stuff already released elsewhere). I think the Asian version games will follow the region coding of their origin.

Does anyone else have problem getting their xbox to play in surround sound? I have never been able to get my surround sound to work with the 360. My xbox broke this month, so I bought a new one last weekend. The surround sound did not work on this one either. I called Msft and they said to take it back and get another one. I took my new xbox back and got a newer one, my surround sound still did not work. I also then picked up some monster cables on clearance with optical on there. Still did not work. I've checked my settings and they are all correct.

My surround sound system worked with the original xbox, I just can't figure out how to get it to work with the 360. I'm thinking that there is something wrong with my optical output on my receiver. Is there any other way to hook up my xbox to surround sound?

Is there anything else you can plug into that optical input on your receiver (maybe a DVD player)? How do you know it doesn't work? Does no sound come out, or do you just get stereo? Is your receiver configured correctly?

I don't have anything else to plug into it. It's one of those dvd/redceiver all in one home theatre systems. It worked with original xbox, but has not worked with 3 different 360's. I know it doesn't work because i get no sound coming out of the surround sound speakers. I have 4 settins to choose from. DVD, AV 1, AV1, and Tuner. I've tired both AV1 and AV2 and neither are working.

Might be a dumb question, but how many optical inputs does your receiver have? If only one, chances are high it's tied to DVD.

Or

Does your recevier have secondary outputs, like for another set of speakers, called ROom B or something? On my old receiver, if that option was enabled, then the main room's surrounds were turned off, yet the fronts still worked. If that's the case, toggle the option.

Just one optical port. The receiver has the dvd player built into it.

It has component, s video, RCA outputs. Also for the sub woofer. I'm not sure what else is on there, I'm at work right now. The manufacturer is Koss.

fujishig
12-30-08, 02:40 PM
I'm assuming you're using component cables.... Make sure you unplug the sound cables and only have the optical and video going from the 360 to the receiver/dvd player... this will allow you to see if the stereo sound you're getting is coming from the optical cable. Otherwise, yeah, I'd double check the settings. Most receivers are able to "choose" which audio input is used for a particular video input, it may be that it's setup wrong. If possible, try to bring your original Xbox out to see if it works.

Since it's happened to multiple 360s, I doubt it's your console. I'd say maybe the optical cable is busted, but that would be rare... can you see the red light coming out of the end of it when the console is on?

This means that the receiver is not using the optical in as the audio input. If the red light is showing, you'll have to mess with your receiver, and be sure to configure it so that optical in is the audio input. I have no idea why it worked for your original Xbox... are you sure you were getting surround sound then, and not just some form of fake surround?

edited to add: Actually, doing a quick search on Koss combo receivers, there seem to be a bunch of complaints about them breaking down... however, I don't know what model you have. That is a possibility as well.

My internet router is upstairs and my system is downstairs. If I am going to use wireless, I want the official adapter, so price doesn't matter. I'm just wondering how consistent the connection is. I've had no problems with the wi-fi in my PS3 or Wii, so I'm hoping the same goes for the 360.

So a new update on my issue of getting the "not supported" resolution message on my 720p/1080i television through HDMI (original post here (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/9150160-post949.html)). I've bolded for those who (reasonably so) don't want to read it all.

I tried my 360 with HDMI on a 1080p television and was able to get picture. The console settings were set to 1080p and the HDMI color space was set to the first of the YCBblahblahs. This would explain why it wouldn't run on my television, as it is only 720p/1080i. I reset it to 480p and RGB for the hdmi color space and go back to my regular TV.

It still shows "not supported". When I bring it back to the 1080p television, my 480p and RGB settings are still there, so I'm not sure why it's not wanting to work on my normal television, since it does support those resolutions. Is there another setting we can't see or change that gets affected when using it on different HDMI sources (computer lcd monitors, etc)? Anyone know anything I'm missing or that I should try?

Finally, I'm still within my return period at Toys R Us. I originally had a non-HDMI 360 and upgraded to this one to free up a component cable slot. I'd trade out with no problem, but I used the license transfer tool like 2 days before this issue happened and won't be able to use it again for a year to access my paid DLC and XBLA games offline. Since it seems like MS transfers the licenses if you get a repair, should I do that, or just get the replacement from Toys R Us and tough out the year without offline download content?

Thanks again for any ideas or suggestions.

That will depend on your own ears.

I'm curious, other than a coaxial digital input how will you get 5.1?

Not sure what you mean. I put my ear up to all 5 speakers and sound came out of all of them with just the white and red cords.

What mode was your receiver set to? My receiver is set to default to Neo 6 Music, which uses all the speakers, if it's not getting an actual Dolby Digital track. It takes some of the audio information from the main channel and sends it to the surround speakers even though the source isn't actually multichannel (or if it's not connected digitally).

Could someone test something out for me? I have someone who is going to trade me a few PS2 games for a few of mine that I don't use, and one of them is some Singstar ones. Does the Karaoke revolution XBOX 360 mic work with the PS2? My PS2 is lent out and I'll get it in about two weeks and I want to see if I need to buy microphones. Thanks! :)

UncleGramps
12-31-08, 12:35 PM
Singstar requires a stupid proprietary adapter. It plugs into a USB port and then provides two standard audio jacks (one for each of the two Singstar mics). In all other games, a standard USB mic will work, but the Singstar games check for the proprietary adapter, and if it's not there, you're S.O.L. You can buy the Singstar mics + adapter for $20 or try and find a deal on one of the older bundles that includes a Singstar game and the mics/adapter.

But I did notice when I migrated to a new console that it did not recognize the game installs I had done prior to moving the HD. So I had to delete the installs, and reinstall to get the benefits.

I forget who said it, but they likened the Harmony remotes to Tivo. Once you have one you'll never go back.

I have the 880 and love it, but it still has its quirks, so it's not quite on the same level as Tivo, but it is very nice.

I tried a few Harmony's before I settled on my 676 a few years back. To me, the layout seemed most similar to the Tivo remotes I was used to.

Of course things could have changed over the last few years so, YMMV.

Yeah, in their infinite wisdom, the Sony folks didn't include an IR sensor on the PS3 (it uses bluetooth only). So you either have to buy a Nyko remote with USB dongle to receive signals or you get that pricey IR-->Bluetooth converter that they sell to do the job.

You can power off the system from the XMB, but not being able to power on sucks.

Also, I have my dongle in slot 4, but the PS3 reads it as port 1. So if I turn on a controller it defaults to "player 2," meaning I have to unplug the dongle to get the PS3 to recognize the controller as "player 1." So if I go from watching a movie to playing a game I have to get up and remove the dongle and then turn on the controller OR completely shut down and turn the system on with the controller.

Either way it's a pain in the fucking ass and a baffling design decision. At least Media Molecule patched Little Big Planet in regards to that issue.

Oh and the most elegant dongle is this one (http://www.schmartstuff.com/), although they are about $40 shipped.

If you hold the PS3 button on the controller, it gives you the option to reassign the controller.

I got the Harmony 360 remote when it first came out... there was some hardware bug where the light that sensed when the remote was moved wouldn't turn off, and the batteries would get drained.

Despite the runaround with Logitech tech support, I liked the remote enough that I just went and bought a better model (with rechargeable batteries) at costco. It really is awesome, especially if you have a lot of components and a spouse that doesn't want to deal with 50 remotes.

Michael Corvin

The 880 is a pretty premium type remote that is usually in the $120-$200 range. IIRC, the xbox one is usually in the sub $100 range. I'm not familiar with the Xbox one, but the 880 has a pretty large full color screen and is completely programmable on your PC and even on the web.

I'd say if you are wanting a remote for just a TV and your Xbox the 880 would be overkill. Now if you are using it for a few components like a stereo, Tivo, PS3, or even theater lighting then you probably want the 880.

Yeah the software is the same for all the remotes, so the only real differences are the screen, the layout and feel of the buttons and contour of the remotes, and I think the overall number of devices being able to control.

Yeah I believe the difference between the 520/550/Xbox is that soem have a few extra buttons. Like the Xbox has buttons that correspond to the 4 buttons on the controller face.

I grabbed one of those 520's from eBay for my bedroom. Have not used it much but def don't like it as much as my 676. The 676 has four actual buttons at the top that you assign Activities to (Play BluRay, Watch TV, Play Xbox, etc). On the 520 you have to use the screen button. Not major but I guess I just prefer the hard buttons.

Over the past half hour my 360 has frozen while playing a game.

I was in the middle of a Halo 3 match when I suddenly heard some static noise and then the image froze and the controller was in a continuous rumble. No way to get out of it but to power OFF the console and detach the batt. pack from the controller.

When I got back everything seemed back to normal but a few minutes laters it happened again. I wasn't in a match but on the main menu Halo 3 screen. I was going thru my Friends List when I suddenly heard the static-y noise again and the image froze up once more. This time while I was scrolling thru my Friends List. Again I powered OFF.

Upon starting the console once again, it doesn't get past the Xbox360 logo. I hear the static noise and it's frozen a 3rd time.

I noticed each time that it froze up there was a kind of checkboard pattern that I could see on the screen. The gameplay remained displayed but it kind of deteriorated over a few minutes (like flickering) and the pattern was more noticeable.

Could this be a problem with the game disc itself and is it a prelude to a RRoD???

I have a question about gamertag recovery. I just got a 360 and wanted to recover my gamertag from my OG xbox (which I don't own anymore). I deleted the info from my old xbox before selling it back to gamestop. This was a couple of years ago. I couldn't get it to recover (it says it can't confirm billing info) so in the meantime I made a new live account but would prefer my old gamertag. I have called 1-800-4MY-XBOX and talked to a csr who confirmed my name, address, phone number, and gamertag but just told me that it should recover provided I entered the info right in the 360. I am pretty sure I have all the correct info but it still won't work. He said he couldn't help me beyond that. Is there a way to talk to someone at Microsoft to get this back or is it lost forever? I have googled and not really come up with anything that helped. In the meantime my new gamertag is linked to the same email address I used when signing up for xbox live originally. Is that going to be a problem? Thanks for any help you can offer.

Back on the OG Xbox there was no Silver or Gold membership levels. Since you only deleted the GamerTAG and didn't call MS to cancel it should have remained active. What kind of billing were you on and what was the payment situation? Perhaps your CC on file had expired and the account may have been locked and required updated billing info. If the account was just dormant for an extended period of time it could have just been deleted that way as well.

Hmmmm . . . thinking about this again. Maybe the GamerTAG has to currently exist on an OG Xbox for it to "Recover GamerTAG". Now I remember when I got my 360 in 12/06 there was a tab for "Gamertag migration" or something similar. Am I mis-remembering this?

Please don't buy these overpriced recharging kits that only work on one device. Get rechargeable AA batteries that will work in every type of device, guitar controllers, wii remotes, xbox 360 controllers, etc. It's just not worth it to spend more on a recharging kit that only works for one device.

I have energizer rechargables for my Guitar Hero controllers and Wii remotes. For some reason I always lose a few of them, or don't have charged ones ready to go when I need them. I kind of like having the pack ready to go and just snapping them on as needed.

I agree with this. I have the recharge battery station and two batteries. I leave one on there until I need it and swap them. I use rechargeable AA batteries in all my Wiimotes, wireless drums and two guitars(and I'm sure something else). Having the packs for the most played system is great.

I started using Eneloop rechargable AAs for the Wiimotes and 360 and other various stuff and they are awesome. Fairly cheap and will hold a charge for months even if you don't use the controller.

A gave it a spin shortly after I woke up today, and it's just as awesome as the first one! Adding handplants, footplants, and a way to get off the board made a good thing even better. I'm glad they didn't seem to fuck with the formula too much.

Can't wait for the full version on the 21st.

Yes, I did just buy an xbox 360 with the sole purpose of returning it to Walmart next week in hopes it will end up back with Microsoft for "repair". I never thought it would come to this, but sadly it has.

Here's my story : When I got the RRoD in mid-December, I called and had a coffin sent to my house. I didn't think at the time about needing to be there when the console was returned. I shipped it off the next day. Then I read about the signature requirement for the console return. I called MS. The CSR told me it would not be a problem to ship it to my office and took my info. A couple of weeks later, the console was repaired. Sure enough those idiots shipped it to my HOUSE. I called them and told them I wanted a delivery intercept (which can only be done by the shipper, not the receiver). They took the info and said it would be no problem. Of course, they didn't call UPS and the package arrived at my house instead of my office and was sent back to the Las Vegas shipping center.
Here's where it gets interesting: I call UPS and tell them I want it sent to my office. I give them the address. The woman says it'll arrive in two days. I ask her why since my office is only 15 minutes from my house. She says she doesn't know but she'll look into it. This morning I check the tracking information and I find my 360 is now in SALT LAKE CITY! I call up UPS to ask what the fuck? They inform me that ha-ha the CSR accidentally transposed two digits in the zip code and it's on it's way to someplace called Lovelock, NV. To make it worse, they claim that #1: They can't reroute the package until it gets to Lovelock and that #2 : Even then, they can't expedite the shipping because it has a Ground Shipping label on it. I ask for a manager and he reiterates the same thing. I'm dumbfounded that a shipping company is so inept that they can't even correcting their mistakes by rerouting from SLC during the departure scan or by expediting shipping. It's beyond comprehension. Basically, I have to wait until tomorrow for the console to arrive in Lovelock for them to turn it around and ship by Ground back to Vegas (Hopefully) to get it by Tuesday if I'm lucky.

Now I have a PS3 and I don't mind playing games on it. But now I was so furious that logic left the scene. I checked and rechecked the Wal-Mart return policy. 90 days with receipt. I taped my receipt to the box and bought me a new Arcade model. Once my 360 returns, back this one goes. I plan to give some story to make sure it gets returned to Microsoft for repairs. I just don't think I want to go another weekend without it under these circumstances. If MS has to eat a new console in the process, so be it!

Whew, that felt good to get off my chest

how many people use their 360 as a media center extender?

i setup mine today to connect to my vista media center pc.. setup was a piece of cake.. have added in my libraries to the watched folders..
but right now, Im not all that happy with the responsiveness of it

i ran the connection test and got a max score.. all green up past hdtv quality.. so i dont think its the connection

is it because i just setup the extender and the library info is still importing? or will the menus always be this laggy?

I don't use the official Media Extender, I use TVersity, but yes, it does take a little while to load everything; for instance, if I go into Music, which refers to my itunes directory, it's probably 1-3 minutes before I can do anything. Once it's there, browsing and playback is pretty good.
It might just be the speed of your network, or the "upload" speed of your vista PC.

I use both my 360 and PS3 as media extenders. I do not like the official Microsoft Media Center though. It is slow and it doesn't support codecs I can play fine through the regular Xbox360 video/audio player, TVersity and PlayOn. Combined with TVersity and PlayOn its basically the perfect media extender for my needs. I also have my 360 hard wired so everything is fast and no real lag. I gave up on using the Media Center feature though.

You will be a very old man before that happens. Microsoft just casually mentioned (http://blog.wired.com/games/2009/01/xbox-head-dont.html) that the new XBox won't be coming out for many years since there is so much more they can do with the existing XBox 360.

With the world economy the way it is and will probably be at least until thru 2010, I doubt that we will see a new console until well after 2012.

I mean think about it. How much more graphically great can the games get? I don't see too many complaints from people about the quality of graphics. It's the quality of games that can be less than desirable.

I think we will see a new Wii long before we see an XBox 720 or a PS4. ;)

I think it will be interesting to see what Sony or Nintendo do. Sony is lagging behind and losing money. Do they keep on hoping that the PS3 can recover and catch up still, or do they look to a new console. The Wii is selling like crazy still, and it will be interesting to see if Nintendo just rides that until sales actually drop, or if they will come out with some sort of refresh like the DS to add features or maybe bump up the graphical capabilities.

Exactly. All this means is that the 360 won't have a four-year lifespan like the original Xbox but we will see the next Xbox by Christmas 2011. And of course Microsoft and Sony are deep into their next consoles' development unless they're planning on going the way of Sega.

Argh! I broke down and bought one, since I have a launch Xbox and I'm convinced it'll be going down any day now (noticed some skipping from Mirror's Edge before I loaded it onto the Hard Drive). I blame you!

On a side note, besides the whole DRM thing, anyone have more than one console and just switch profiles from one to the other to play games with a memory card (I realize you can recover your profile to any console online, but it takes forever)

They're not shutting down threads at 1000 posts anymore unless there's a good reason to migrate over if the topic strays too far.

To keep this post on topic, I also use a memory card to keep my GamerTag portable. I've got two 360s to prevent marital problems. I'm sure that I probably would've gotten a lashing if I had been hogging a lone 360 when Fable II came out. $200 for an Arcade (had a spare HDD) was a small price to pay to save my ass.

I also game a lot in other places (friends, office, etc.), so it's nice to have that portability. I can re-download any DLC anywhere, and I don't miss out on any achievements I may get outside of the house.

Ordered the new 360 yesterday, it's arriving tomorrow -- I love Dell! (Well, except for their friggin sales tax policy). Quick question : I've used Component cables with my old unit. If I have a 1080i plasma TV and only use the 360 for gaming (and the rare occasional Netflix streaming), it is worth it to reconfigure my system to output the HDMI cable, or should I just stick with what I already have?

Groucho

Fewer cables are always good, but the wires are already run so it's just plug and play when he gets his new system. I say just hook it up and go for now. If you end up rewiring something down the line than swap it out for HDMI.

That would work. Obviously it isn't as sleek as the 360 adapter and it requires a separate outlet, but it's about half the cost of a used one.

The only negative I see with it vs a flashed router is that it only supports one device. A router would allow 4 or 5 devices to be wired into the bridge. I have my 360, PS3, and PC sharing a bridge.

That would work. Obviously it isn't as sleek as the 360 adapter and it requires a separate outlet, but it's about half the cost of a used one.

I do have a spare wireless router at home... I wonder if it's flashable...

Is the audio going to the TV with the RCA plugs or are you running optical to a receiver?

Audio goes through opitcal. I've heard it's hard to run optical and HDMI at the same time but that it is possible to jerry-rig the cable to do so. Is that correct?

pinata242
01-15-09, 12:37 PM
That is correct and why I was asking the question. You'll have to pop off the plastic casing on the A/V unit where it plugs into the 360 (where the TV/HDTV switch is).

I've done it and it's easy and works just fine.

Yes. All you have to do is bust the big plastic casing off your component/composite cable. Then you should have room to hook up both the HDMI and the old A/V cable and just hook the audio up to your optical and leave the component stuff unplugged.

The one bad thing about this is you can't switch outputs, or at least I can't. If I pause my game and jump over to TV or whatever, then the 360 thinks that I'm going from HDMI to component and has to reset the box to switch the signals over.

pinata242

^ Yeah, the HDMI handshaking is a little weird on switching inputs. Typically I only have a problem when the tv is on or off - I can change to component for TV and back to HDMI with the 360 on with no problem.

But if your 360 comes on before the tv is on and set to HDMI, it might reboot the system. Also if you turn the tv off but leave the 360 on - when you come back and turn on the tv, it might reboot the 360.

It's weird and I haven't found a hard-line rule yet. Just keep it in mind.

I heard you can get around this by snipping the component cables off the A/V pack, but I didn't want to gimp it in case I need them later on down the road for something.

This, you can get WRT54Gs for $25 in some spots, well worth to it get, flash and setup as a Bridge.

I'm not near my cable now, but going off of memory I don't see how this would work. The cables come out the back of the A/V break-out box and it's the box itself that overlaps the HDMI port. Moot point as nobody would do this over popping off the cosmetic plastic.

I believe you have to do both. I haven't really looked into it, but just read about it somewhere. You have to sever the component cables right at the source, not where they come out of the plastic casing. Just snip a wire or something. Again, don't really know all the details.

Oh oh oh. I see, you were talking about the HDMI/Component switching issue, not the physical restriction of using HDMI video and optical audio.

Yeah, I haven't heard of that and not really sure how that would change anything since (at least in my case) the component cables aren't actually plugged into the display anyway. They should just be vestigial.

My component cables aren't plugged in either. Just HDMI and the optical, and yet still if I ever switch inputs away from HDMI when the 360 is on, it will reboot when I come back when I come back to HDMI (presumably because it switched to component when I went away from HDMI).

Definitely will when I upgrade to a new HT. Probably don't wanna run the surround sound all the time though, so I'll have to get HDMI splitters or something. Mmm, fun!

Why not? If you don't listen to things in 5.1(or more) that are created with 5.1 (or more), you're not playing/watching the way the devs/creators intended! ;)

Sometimes you make compromises because you're in an apartment (neighbors) or the wife is sleeping.

Maybe I should get some 5.1 headphones or something. ;)

So I got the RRoD for the second time with this 360. It sucks, I was getting pretty confident with it telling friends it had been running like a champ since getting back from repair about a year ago and sure enough right in the middle of game play it froze up and would only respond to the power button being pressed, got the 3 rings after trying to re turn it on. So has anyone heard about a 360 getting this hardware failure multiple times? I was under the impression that once you had sent it back once already that was the end of it..

Receivers have midnight mode to keep things quieter...

But headphones are a good option, mind you it would highlight your singing a little more if there were no background noise.

Make sure you verify the specific revision of your router is supported before bothering. After that I can help you if you want to go through with it.

My singing is amazing!

I don't sing after 9-10PM anyways, as I'm extremely conscientious of my surroundings. If I'm watching a movie (which is only hooked up via optical), I completely turn off my subwoofer if it's after 10PM.

...And another thing is that my receiver runs extremely hot if it's been on for a while. It's the only HT I've owned, and it is a refurb, so I don't know if that's normal or not.

I'll look into the "midnight mode" thing though.

Are you saying they sent you back the same console? My original (purchased 12/06) unit RRoD'd last February and they sent me a replacement that had recently been manufactured. Just last week, 1/06, that console RRoD'd and I'm about to ship it back tomorrow. Both of them were the 3 rings hardware failure.

Sort of off-topic, but leave it to UPS to screw things up. *sigh* When I submitted my repair online last week, I got my reference # and shipping notification from UPS that my Xbox coffin was on it's way. Delivery was to be on last Friday 1/09 but soon changed to Monday 1/12 -- no big deal.

I'm home all day on Monday and after not hearing any UPS (truck noise or them knocking) I check my e-mail and see that I have a notice from UPS. It states that my shipment was DELIVERED and left on the front porch at 5:45 P.M. and I'm reading this e-mail around 7:15. I go outside and there's nothing there.

I call Microsoft and they tell me to call UPS. I call UPS and they tell me to contact Microsoft and let them know that they need to contact UPS so they could do a trace on the package.

On the 2nd call to Microsoft they CSR just went ahead and submitted a new repair order and I'd be getting a new box. So I'm fine with that.

The very next afternoon a neighbor from down the street brings over the shipment that UPS had mistakenly left at her door on Monday. I get that box and pack the 360 in there but since the original repair order has now been scrapped I don't affix the enclosed shipping label. I'm awaiting the 2nd box that is schedule to arrive tomorrow. I need to place that label on the box so everything will be back in order.

My nearest UPS drop-off is inside the Office Depot just a few blocks away. I believe the pick-up time is around 4:30 P.M. Hopefully UPS will have the package delivered by then or I may just have to wait until Monday before the 360 is FINALLY on it's way to the repair center.

Unfortunately it's not that easy. The repaired 360's generally seem to be better as far as avoiding another RROD thanks to better cooling and hardware, but even then they're still prone to fail, just at a reduced rate.

Like I posted earlier, my repaired 360 that I got back a couple of days ago screeches and moans when a disc is spinning. It never made noises like that before (and it is the same unit I shipped out, by serial number). I don't know what they did to "fix" it, but I'm not impressed at all. I should send it back for further repairs, right? It froze twice on Tuesday requiring a manual shut-off, but none yesterday. I don't think that bodes well for its long-term health.

Haven't opened it up yet, but the reports are that the arcades from Dell are all jaspers. Is there a way to tell without opening the box and checking the voltage?

You don't need to open the box to check. You can see it through the hole where you view the serial number.
