Isn't that just talking about the new controllers in general compared to the previous generation? The only thing different about the red is that it's red. Or am I mistaken?
edit: Reading the reviews on Amazon, they say it's the same exact controller, just in red with black accents. Costs more because of the play&charge included.Correct. It was initially rumored to have the improved d-pad, but that didn't happen.

I haven't played the sequel, but from every review/podcast I've read/heard, just get the sequel. It has everything the original has with a more friendly user interface, new pinatas and such. Of course the downside is price. I'm sure you can find the original for about $10, while the other one just came out a couple months ago.
The 2nd one is much more user friendly, but either one will keep you plenty busy for hours upon hours. Also, the 2nd one was priced $40 out of the gate, so it may be even a bit cheaper nowadays if you dig around. (Which while more than the first one, at least it's not a $50 stretch or anything.)

There's a tool that can allow you to redownload everything if you want - it's a slight PITA - but nothing too horrible.

If I'm not signed in, those 4 or 5 games cannot be played because they were purchased by me (not signed in) on a different console.
I could use the DRM transfer tool to fix that, but it's not enough of a problem to justify since you can only do it once per year and there's always a chance my unit will die.
Now, if you aren't going to be online constantly, then sure you've got a lot to think about.

Plus the batteries were DOA. While it's working right now, I have my concerns about whether or not the inside of the Xbox looks like my game case.

Not that big of a deal, but depends on how much shit you have bought and need to transfer licenses to. In my case, my online queue filled up but wasn't that bad.

Well everything can be found easily via google, as far as I'm concerned. :)
Still, like you said no one really minds answering the simple questions and personally it always seems people ask regardless of whether you try and present info in a specific manner. Hell, there's a lot of outdated FAQ's and stickies littered across this forum which shows how often people really refer back to them.
And really, I don't think any particular question has come up so often that they're annoying to see. At least I certainly haven't been annoyed.

I've found some conflicting reports through google, but wanted to get some feedback here on this terrible awful grinding noise my Xbox is making. Is this normal for everyone here, should I be concerned?
Some people online seem to say it comes with the territory. Some seem to say it's indicative of bad things to come (discs getting torn up, etc.) If it helps, my Xbox is horizontal.

Microsoft's Major Nelson has published statistics on Microsoft's New Xbox Experience, highlighting that sales on XBLA almost tripled the week of the revamped service's launch.
In addition to this, Avatar specific titles, such as A Kingdom for Kelfings, saw the second-best first week sales ever, alongside UNO which saw an increase in sales of 650 per cent in one day upon being updated to include in-game Avatars.
Movie downloads on the console increased 49 per cent and TV episode downloads were also up 30 per cent the week after the NXE launch.

I don't know about that. Sure Avatars helped sell Kingdom For The Keflings, but I always use 360voice.com as a relatively accurate read on XBLA sales and though the single-day peak of 1859 is impressive for an XBLA game, it's no where near the 2536 that Braid saw or the 5244 peak of Castle Crashers.
If anything, I'd expect that any increase in XBLA sales has more to do with SSFIIHD Turbo which had first day numbers of 2782 more than anything to do with the NXE.
The Uno curve (http://360voice.gamerdna.com/game.asp?game=UNO&type=1)is funny -- 434 on 11/18 and 5257 on 11/19. It's been running 550 - 700 per day since.

There is a glitch that lets you remove non-zero-gamerscore games from your list. The only requirements are that you need to get the game to the second spot of your list (usually by loading the game, meaning you still own it) and you need to a zero-score game in the top spot of the list.

Uh oh. Play with backdoor codes at your own risk. I successfully removed Undertow & Lumines, both of which I only had one achievement in, but when I tried Totemball it reset my Gamerscore to zero. :eek: :mad:
I rebooted and I still had zero Gamerscore. :sad: I let it sit for a few and my GS eventually came up but when I went to look at my achievements it only showed my 5 most recent games and nothing else. If I let it sit, the list very slowly populated itself again.
After the heart attack and cold sweats subsided I decided to tempt fate twice. Screw Totemball, I don't want that blight on my Gamercard. Well it did it again. Zero gamerscore. This time it took a little longer to get it back and a little longer for my achievement list to repopulate.
and Totemball remains... sigh. Totemball wins, I don't have the stones to try it for a third time.

Yes. They talked about adding this feature a few updates back. That way people could essentially wipe a game's slate clean and start over fresh. So it seems it's almost built in already just a matter of letting people actually do it legitimately.

I just ordered a Xbox 360 Arcade Bundle. Dell.com was offering free shipping + I found a 20% off coupon, so $169 total. And after researching online, it appears an Arcade version is the best chance at a Jasper. Hopefully that's what I get, but if not, that's fine too. I'll add the HDD later.

If it's the drive, then it's not covered. Don't know if they send it back or if they bill you. It might just be worth getting a new Arcade unit for $199 and swapping in your old HDD rather than paying for a repair job from MS.

I suspect the answer is no, but is there any way to combine profiles? I created one when I first got the machine. I created a second profile that I used for Live. It's no big deal but I was wondering if I can merge the first into the second?

That's what I figured, at least I didn't see an obvious way of doing it on the machine. Like I said it's no big deal just wish I had thought about splitting the "gamer card" before registering the 2nd account on live. Guess it just means I'll have to replay some games to reclaim some points ;) Again not that they really mean anything...

Gamers put lots of time into their favorite games gaining new abilities, levels, and other benefits as the game goes along. A couple of the worst things that could happen to a gamer is to have his game console stolen or lose the game data stored on the console.
The Standard Online reports that a student named Ryan Ketsenburg from Missouri State was able to recover his stolen Xbox 360 console using a bit of technological knowhow. Ketsenburg reports that he and a roommate came back from a school-sanctioned trip and were so tired they forgot to lock the door to their room.
When the students woke the next day, Ketsenburg realized that his Xbox had been stolen. According to a police report the student says that while he and his roommate were sleeping someone crept into the room and made off with the game system.
The thief neglected to take the wireless controller to the Xbox and Ketsenburg was able to get the controller to connect to the Xbox, meaning that the console was nearby. The game was afoot and Ketsenburg used the LEDs on the controller (which flash when the controller is out of range) to narrow the floor that the console was on down to the fifth floor of the multi-story dorm and finally to a specific room on the floor.
According to reports, the student then contacted the advisor living on the floor of the theft. The advisor searched the room and found the console. Ketsenburg was able to prove that the console was his when the wireless controller turned the Xbox on. He recovered his console, but found that the thief had reformatted the hard drive and that all of the saved games were gone.
Ketsenburg says that he is prosecuting the thief to the fullest extent of the law.
Nice job by the student. The thief, on the other hand, needs to find a occupation, since he isn't very good at that one.

If it's the drive, then it's not covered. Don't know if they send it back or if they bill you. It might just be worth getting a new Arcade unit for $199 and swapping in your old HDD rather than paying for a repair job from MS.

There is still a high probability you will just get a different refurb if you were to claim you got the RROD. I'd say it's worth a shot before pulling the trigger on a $200+ purchase. I sent my latest one in back in July and got a brand new unit back instead of the one I sent in.

If wrapping your 360 in blankets will start a fire, then obviously don't do it. I've read about a lot of people doing this (and nothing about any of them burning their houses down); however, I've never done it myself. Perhaps google "360 force rrod," and try to find a safer way to do it... that, or buy a new, hopefully more reliable, 360.

OK, this is really pissing me off :brickwl2: My XBOX has been near my house since Friday!!! I missed it Fri because I was at work, so I got it sent to my work...... Well, no package yesterday, called UPS around 3:30pm. UPS told me that the driver could not find my work.. :wtf: turns out, the school that I work at is undergoing renovation, and has switched the address to the side street.....which is on the same intersection as the original!!!! Sooooo I call UPS again! Tell them about the address change. I am told that If the driver still can not find the school, they will redeliver next day. I'm ok with that, but TODAY, I call @ 8am just to verify..and am told that since the address was wrong, they are holding the package!!! The driver never got the message the 3 previous calls that I made to document apparently dissapeared? Next, I get a personal call from the call center. I am told to verify the new address, so that I may get it tomorrow! They were still using the old address!! I had to repeat the NEW address 3x before he got it!!! Well the saga continues...:fc:

That is not the only way it damages. The first time i replaced my console it was putting those circular marks on discs. It screwed up a copy of Viva Piņata and a copy of Gears. My 360 was horizontal and was unmoved. The CSR was a little obnoxious with their questions (Am i sure it wasn't being moved from vertical to horizontal? Am i jumping or thumping the floor to cause vibrations? :lol:) but since i had the extended warranty they replaced it.
I absolutely believe there is some kind of problem with some of the disc drives that cause that problem.

Some folks prefer the board/arcade games, some the music games, and others FPSs. I mostly play Halo, Gears, Rock Band 2, CoD4, and L4D. I could be enticed to play some of the Arcade titles like Castle Crashers, Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride, Lost Cities, and even Uno.

the only problem i have had with my launch console is the disc marking. and, it has only happened to a single disc (battlefield: bad company). the console has never been in the vertical position. i am waiting to see if it happens again to another disc, in which case i will send it back (my warranty expires 11/09). btw, the game disc still plays fine.

So I just canceled my Netflix after trying it out for a month. It's pretty terrible on the 360. The streaming is really un-reliable, and their choices are terrible. I remember the first time I fired up a Heroes episode, it was in HD...then never again. Tonight, everything would give me 1 bar of quality, except some Joe Rogan comedy thing was 4 bars. If they ever get their act together so that the very small selection of movies I would actually want to watch would run properly, I'd give them another chance.

I've really had no problems with the Netflix streaming and I always show a strong signal. Now if you fast-forward ahead then there can be some long buffering times, but otherwise it's worked pretty well for me.
On the other hand, you're dead on about the pathetic selections of movies available for streaming. I hope that improves soon. Still need to watch Superman Doomsday before they pull it after New Years. Will my repaired console return by then.....

My DSL connection normally kind of sucks so i generally get 2 bars on the Netflix stream. That works out well enough to satisfy me since i mostly use Netflix for actual DVD rentals. The streaming was a little bit of a bonus.

I usually get two bars as well. And I'm satisfied with the quality considering my DSL connection. The content on Netflix is really good IMO. Especially since they made the deal with Starz. Before that deal was made, the Netflix on demand content was pretty bad.

I live out in the country a bit on a backroad and the only way to get high speed internet and TV (satellite that is,) is to go with Bell, our phone company. Rogers Cable/Internet aren't available to us because the wire doesn't run high enough up on my road.

I live in the suburbs but i also live in West Virginia which isn't exactly at the head of the pack on technology. My choice is either DSL or cable and the cable here is horrific. When my father had cable internet he was down approximately one day a week. The connection also fluctuated so much it would have been bad for gaming.
So i'm stuck with a solid DSL connection but only 1.5 down. :(

Cable internet here costs more than dsl. My cable tv is also unreliable. Just the other day it went out about 9 times in 2 hours.

It is $50+ for the slowest cable modem service if I don't want to switch to cable television. For us, DirecTV >>>> cable TV, so DSL it is. I also get an additional bundle discount for having DirecTV, DSL, and phone service.

Our cable company is Mediacom, it's a really shitty service, the last I had them there were drops in the service for a few seconds about every 10-20 minutes, and yes it would disconnect you from live. My DSL service is only 5/1 but it's super stable.

I got my ;) red ring'ed ;) 360 back!! :banana: It IS my original, same s#. It seems as if they put in their ultra new "silent drive" where the DVD tray used to be? Reason being, that thing does not make any noise!...and I have not heard the FAN turn on at all. Any way, I am 1 happy camper :clap: Since I have "played" the red ring card, does any one know if MS will sell me an extended warranty on top of a FRESH repair?

Admittedly I'm only paying for the "middle tier" of service, now that Time Warner has divided it out (something like 700k, 7MB, and 10MB, and of course prices vary).
Since getting my box back (had the Unreadable Disk error) my wife occasionally gets "This content can no longer be accessed" (or something similar) when playing Rock Band 2 when I'm not logged in. I though MS did whatever transfer needed to be done, and to be safe, I even went to Xbox.com and redownloaded everything as well. Has anyone else had that problem?

Interesting - I saw Pro units with the 12V power supply indicating a Jasper. I only went with the arcade because i saw no reason to pay $100 for a chrome disc cover.
I have RR Cable Internet too and it seems they can't get higher than that. I'm at work now but when I tested my home PC, it was a little slower than what you're getting. I'm sure there's RR folks out there who get blazing speeds, but I ain't one of 'em.

So, I have an HDMI problem on an arcade system I bought a week ago. Basically all of my HDTVs now say that the signal coming from the 360 over is "not supported". The 360 works fine on a 22" lcd computer monitor I have with an HDMI->DVI cable, so the HDMI port can't be completely shot.
I've tried setting the resolution on the 22" monitor to 1280x720 and 640x480 to see if a more common resolution would be noticed by the television, but no dice. I don't have an option for 720x480 on my 22" lcd, or I'd try that too.
There a multiple page post on the xbox.com support forums and avsforums about people with the exact same problem, but no solution yet (and I'm not holding out hope). Some people have had luck blindly navigating the menus with no picture over HDMI and somehow selecting a supported res, but that hasn't worked for me yet, either.
Am I missing something obvious here? Also, with the system relatively new should I try to swap it back at Toys R Us where I got it from, or send it to MS? This is all further complicated by the fact that I just deleted, relicensed with the new tool, and redownloaded all of my DLC for XBLA and Rock Band, which used up my one use of the license tool for a year.
Thanks in advance for any help or ideas.

I don't actually have the original Halo, and even though I think the series is highly overrated they are still entertaining and it might be fun to play through it again.

I have 1.5 service. I'd like 8.00 but we got promotion pricing for the first six months of cable/phone/internet and I can't up the Internet until it's over without forfeiting the cheaper pricing on the other two :mad:
So, I have an HDMI problem on an arcade system I bought a week ago. Basically all of my HDTVs now say that the signal coming from the 360 over is "not supported". The 360 works fine on a 22" lcd computer monitor I have with an HDMI->DVI cable, so the HDMI port can't be completely shot.
I've tried setting the resolution on the 22" monitor to 1280x720 and 640x480 to see if a more common resolution would be noticed by the television, but no dice. I don't have an option for 720x480 on my 22" lcd, or I'd try that too.
There a multiple page post on the xbox.com support forums and avsforums about people with the exact same problem, but no solution yet (and I'm not holding out hope). Some people have had luck blindly navigating the menus with no picture over HDMI and somehow selecting a supported res, but that hasn't worked for me yet, either.
Am I missing something obvious here? Also, with the system relatively new should I try to swap it back at Toys R Us where I got it from, or send it to MS? This is all further complicated by the fact that I just deleted, relicensed with the new tool, and redownloaded all of my DLC for XBLA and Rock Band, which used up my one use of the license tool for a year.

I received the same message that you are, and all it took (after I tried everything else) was unplugging the splitter (from the wall) for about 5 minutes and then plug it back in. I'm not sure what happened to cause the problem, but that's how I fixed it (twice).

Strange. I also have a monoprice hdmi splitter that this 360 has worked great with, but I'm away from home for the holidays and all of the sudden I'm having trouble with the HDTVs here. I don't think that the 360 is wrecked, but I've just about tried everything and can't get it to work.

Mine worked great also. As a matter of fact, I played the 360 the same day (in the morning) that that happened. In the evening we turned it on to watch an HD-DVD and we got the 'not supported' message. Nothing happened to cause it, we didn't unhook or move anything, it just happened.

Hard drive talk again...
I have around $155 in gamestop credit burning a hole in my pocket. I was going to pick up 3 XB360 games and be done with it. But now, since I have RB1 & RB2 and would like to try the install games to hard drive feature, I'm thinking I should get a hard drive.
Should I go all out and get the 120gb or get the 60gb and 1 game?
Is 60gb enough? (I have around 3gb left on my 20gb)
Both are waaayyy overpriced, but the 120 is a little cheaper $/gb.

Get a used 120GB. If I'm not mistaken they are around $100 at GS. Then you still have some credit to put towards some games.
I have the 120 and have installed maybe 4-5 games, have a bunch of RB DLC(+RB1 import), halo maps, 30 arcade games, etc. and am already down to 67GB. Not sure how much reserved space is on the 120 but just looking at the numbers I've already eaten up almost 60GB of space somehow.

I bought a used one w/o problems (it was from a returned Elite).
This weekend they have a B2G1 deal (starts Friday). If you don't have an Edge card, this would be a good to to buy one (would pay for itself if you bought the 120gb and a $55 game w/ the 2nd free)

I think it's a fantastic idea and it makes sense that they'd want to do this for the titles they want you to download from them. Hell, since Intellivision DS doesn't appear to be coming, I might just get that game for the nostalgia (again) and achievements! :lol:
I'd rather they get BG&E and the PoP games going again first, so I can actually play them (replay in the case of Sands of Time).

Both BG&E and Sands of Time are in my top 5 from last gen games I wish I hadn't sold. BG&E still isn't on the back-compat list is it? I did rebuy BG&E for the GC, but I'd probably get it if it was offered up on the Marketplace. Same for PoP, which I haven't re-bought yet.

Some I understand completely. Two others I was interested in: Riddick, $60 for a remake with some new features + new campaign becomes half as attractive when the original is backwards compatible. Same goes for Top Spin. Why buy the sequels when the original is still the cream of the crop?

If true...I think this would be AWESOME. I know many here are "above" caring about Achievements and Achievement points, but I'm a huge fan of the concept. I like getting something for my efforts other than hand cramps. :D
I had been thinking of replaying some OG XBOX titles like "Batman Begins" and others and getting some new points for playing would be icing on the cake.

Not sure the exact price, but with the deals/prices I got on those points, Halo was probably well under $5. So well worth it for drive noise and convenience of it just being in my games library.
I didn't try it out yet, but I wonder if that game will see and use my save game from the disc version. I don't see why not, but you never know.

Why does my 360 make a metal clank sound a couple minutes after starting up? It's just at the dashboard, makes the sound once (almost every time I start it), and that's it. Anything to be concerned about?

:lol: Me neglect my 360? That'll be the day. Seriously. I'm still floating on the $5 1600 point cards from Target from over the summer. I did just get the 4000 point cards off ebay with the 30% cashback, so not near as cheap but still decent. I had to drop those into the account to make sure they were valid.
Oh, and I didn't want any games for christmas... just points. rotfl I'm addicted. Looks like the only way my 360 will be neglected is if I join a support group.

I did the test at work and when it got up to 77,000 / 55,000 I got scared shitless and closed the window. :eek:
Aren't you guys and girls a little worried about running the tests at work? I mean if I'm not mistaken, that is at least 77MB down & 55MB uploading all of a sudden. And since the tests run about 20 seconds, those would be averages and a lot more data is being sent back and forth.

Top Spin 3 is leagues better than Top Spin. And this is coming from someone who has completed Virtua Tennis, Tennis 2K2, Top Spin, Top Spin 2, Top Spin 3, Sega Superstars Tennis, Virtua Tennis 3, Mario Power Tennis, etc. Once you get used to it, it's the best playing and deepest tennis game of all-time.

I was playing Halo 3 yesterday and such a fun that tried to buy some DLC, it seems I've already bought both DLC maps. Go figure.
So I remembered about his post and bought Halo, for half the price!
Actually I don't have the disc anymore, I never played it in the Xbox 360. Of course I played hundreds (?) of hours of Halo in the original Xbox. A lot of MP, the old way, with everyone in the same room and sharing the screen. :D
If they could only add Live support to this game...

I would like it better if you didn't need the stupid disk to play. Even with a hd install it still reads off the disc the entire time. Apparently it's a 5.9gb install of crappy demos.

There were rumors that MS had a "fixed" dpad ready for the 360 controllers but obviously it's going to be a silent update (they were supposed to be initially rolled out with green limited edition controllers for some soccer game in Europe). If people are seeing it in the red controller, that's a good sign.

The D-pad on the current one is awful. It's mushy and imprecise. Try playing Pac Man CE with it and you'll see.
The red ones have the standard D-pads, not the redesign. I won't buy another controller until they come out with the redone Dpad that was on the green Euro controller.
