Yes. So you could queue up your Rock Band songs at work Tuesday, flip on the 360 when you get home (not even mess with the TV) and it will grab 'em for you.
I had to re-download it to, even though it told me I already had it. Weird.
Actually, I noticed, there appears to be a few seconds load time. If you back out of that menu wanting you to redownload, it will work.
I don't like the red hat though. I wish I could change its color. Hopefully they will have more choices soon. Or at least the ability to change colors of items.

really like the update, its very fast, much faster going through stuff. Avatar while limited does look nice. I love the netflix thing, very nice, wish you could browse movies from it though. I was using a media center plugin that let me browse and watch netflix movies on my 360 before this update and i was able to browse movies easily, it was slower and the video quality wasnt as nice as the new dashboard netflix addon.
The few HD stuff like Heroes and the Office looks good though.
I was getting errrors when selecting community games etc. , I also really like the xbox movie that played on the update.

So who else is getting Lips? If I just want a singing game can you do that through Rock Band? Because I like Guitar Hero so I'll pick up the guitar once in a while and the drums intrigue me, but I'm wondering if you can just sing and not use any instruments with RB. How is the downloadable song selection for RB? Is $67 for Lips the cheapest around?

Get Rock Band. DLC for it is close to 350 songs currently with what seems like 10 on average released each week.
Yes you can sing without playing any instruments. And the drums are hella fun :)

Other than that I am definitely liking the new feel, although it will take awhile to know where to find everything. Also, anyone have an idea of when we are going to start seeing the games like 1 vs 100 that was previewed at E3 I believe.

You have to push the "X-box" button on the controller to bring up the mini guide. Then you can pull up your achievements through there and delete the ones with 0 gamer score.

Two places.
First, press up down on the analog on the dash. You will scroll through "Spotlight" "My Xbox" "Video Marketplace" etc. "Friends" is in there somewhere with showing off everyone's fancy new avatars.
Second, hit the guide button on the controller to bring up the blade. You friends can be found here as well, in the same (mostly) layout as the old dash.
The Zune got an update yesterday. Yet we still don't have proper integration with Live or the 360. Three new games were added. That's about the only difference I can tell.

No, the disc needs to be in the tray for the obvious reason (so you don't steal the content from a rental game or a friend's copy).

The drives in-store come with a transfer cable. If you get a used one, you can write to MS and tell them the serial number is "on order" and they'll ship you one.

Gamerpics work the same as always. The quality of the gamerpic you can make from your avatar is so dreadful that I won't be using that.
The old themes are pretty much terrible now, but can be used. Not sure if they display anything other than 1 image though.

I made my silly guy, but it pretty much looks like everybody else's. Where do I find the full image to post in the thread, so I can be cool as well?
I installed fallout3 as well, but have not had a chance to run it yet.
I guess that is about all the excitement I will get from the update. I don't have gold, so Netflix downloads won't be for me. The chat doesn't interest me either.
Are there any other cool things I am missing?

Where in the new menus do i change what theme i am using? I can't find the option anywhere. :(
Also, i'm running my 360 through a VGA connection onto a standard computer monitor. I set my resolution at 1280x1024 and everything looked fine before. Now everything looks all stretched out wrong on the theme that is in the background.
It also sucks that the theme i paid for now only has the first slide.

Themes. While any themes you work will NXE, check out some of the new themes via My Xbox and select your profile (second slot) and then change theme. Xbox 360, Spectrum, Day and Night are new themes that available as part of your NXE upgrade…check them out.

I never thought i wanted or needed one but it looks like I may have to do the 120 thing because I loaded Lost Planet CE (6 gigs and some change) and I'm now down to a little over 1 gig left on my 20 gig drive. I guess I could delete LP of the drive but we'll see.

Has anyone tried any of the Community game demos? The games look kind of cool but the demos blow. They give you such a limited amount of time you can't even get a feel for the game.
For instance the game Blow seemed like a cool puzzler but i couldn't even make it through the tutorial in the amount of time it gives you.
Colosseum also seemed like it had a good deal of potential but it barely gives you time to make it through the first wave. :(

I did not have any luck in Austin with Target, all were sold out and discontinued. Circuit City had them for 99 right next to the 60GB for 99. :lol: I could not figure that one out. Still way to much money but oh well.

Hey I just noticed something I'm going to miss about the old dash. There is no open dvd drive option now you have to push the button on the 360 to open it. I know this sounds lazy, but I always hated pushing that button it feels like it's going to break.

The "Open Tray" is still there. It is the first "blade" (furthest left) when you scroll the MY XBOX section.

This is because Bungie originally optimized Halo 3 with some HDD caching behind the scenes. Therefore if it's installed on the drive, it's trying to read and write to the drive instead of just going from the drive to the RAM.

When you look at your friends list and it shows the folks who are online it shows what game they are in with the little cover. My question though is what decides the little background behind the avatar of your friends? Is it random or is it based upon what they are playing?

It is random.... The ones you see now are the generic ones that all non-premium themes will use.
The premium themes will change the background of each friend to an image specific to the theme.
For instance, I have a premium Gears of War 2 theme that I got with Gears 2. The images behind each friend look like vehicles and such from Gears 2.
C'mon now you can get that "Brady Bunch" vibe going if you tilt your head while snapping your pic. What's not to love?

Something I've just noticed while scrolling thru my Friends List. When I bring up the traditional looking list using the Xbox Guide button I can see each of them listed individually as usual and it shows the number of Friends. However, when I scroll thru new Friends section (with the avatars and environments) the number is sometimes different. I now realize it is because 2 or more Friends are in the same party/environment.

Yeah.. I'd like to get a couple more premium themes.. But not at 250 points a piece.
There are a good amount of them now that were released yesterday and today.
I also wish that viewing things like themes and gamer pics on the marketplace.xbox.com site would give previews.
And, it would be especially nice if there was a free section on the marketplace website for all content that is free.
They really should have given 1-2 free premium themes just to give you a feel for them. I've never bought a theme before but with the new ones I can say I'd probably drop 250 for a kickass Halo one.

Yes it's the 120 GB, sorry for not putting that in there. I bought it for the same reason, my 20 GB hard drive fills up fast, barely enough room for demos.

Also: There are a couple premium themes that came free with the update. They are called Day and Night, and you can find them already listed in your available themes. I think the Night theme is the better of the two.

I miss being able to choose colors for the framework of the Dash. I say that because the white lettering used in the upper left corner can wash out depending on what background you use.
Maybe the option is there but I haven't found it yet...

I must be the only one who doesn't care that it starts on Spotlight. The first thing I did every day when I booted up the XBox under the old dash was look at the Inside XBox thing. I'm sure part of it was the completionist in me not wanting it to blink orange, but still, there was some things I found in there that I wouldn't have seen otherwise.

I'm sure part of it was the completionist in me not wanting it to blink orange, but still, there was some things I found in there that I wouldn't have seen otherwise.

Of course not, but they finally got rid of all the ads cluttering the dash so what do they do? Boot you up to the page with the ads. :lol: It's not a huge deal, but the fact remains that the Wii and PS3 remain ad free all while offering a free service. I pay for Live and have to see ads. There is something backwards about that.

I still don't get the premium themes thing. I have a theme called "Hope Runs Deep" that I downloaded for free before the Gears launch... is this different from the "Hope Runs Deep" Premium theme? Because it doesn't do anything to the friends list backgrounds...
I am using the Nighttime one and really like that.
I wish the dashboard could give a preview of what a theme will look like. That, or a website on xbox.com that would do that.

I like the new install to hard drive feature. I've used it for Rock Band 2, since I only have a 20 GB drive. Counting DLC, I think 90% of the drive is currently being used for Rock Band.
It's amazing how quiet it makes the game. I was so used to that constant noise. It would be nice if the 120GB drive wasn't twice as expensive as a regular drive of that size - It would be nice to be able to install the rest of my games.

I installed 6.5gb of GH:WT this morning (soon to be deleted :)) and was instantly impressed with the difference in sound and how quick the game loaded to the main menu. Installing games will be mandatory for me from now on.
You can calm your "will new Avatar clothes cost me Microsoft points?" worries, because Microsoft is committed to offering the upcoming Avatar fashion choices for free ... for now.
Talking to German website dreisechzig.net, Boris Schneider-Johne (Microsoft's Xbox product manager in Germany) confirmed that the first few weeks of new Avatar clothes will be available for free, but doesn't go as far to say that all Avatar clothing in the future will be available for no charge. "More costumes will be made available for free in the next weeks" says Schneider-Johne, adding "what's going to happen as of spring is yet to be announced." So, feel free t put those Microsoft points back in your pocket ... for now.

In case you guys haven't tried out some of the new Community games yet go download the trial to Blow. I actually just dropped the 400 points to buy it because i kept playing the trial repeatedly. It is a very chill untimed puzzle game. It is supposed to have 70 puzzles out of the box. Decent graphics and i kind of like the instrumental soundtrack.
So check it out.

Xbox Parties . . . FYI. As far as I can tell, in order to create or accept invitations to Xbox Parties you need an Xbox LIVE Gold subscription. However, you can use a 48-hour Gold Trial code in order to enjoy that feature.
This seems different from other features such as pic messaging and video chat with the Vision Cam and the new Photo Share application. Each of those need a proper Gold subscription code (minimal 1 month). 48-hour codes do NOT make those features accessible.
There's quite a thread going at the AVForums in which several 360 owners are saying that the New Xbox Experience has caused their Xbox 360 consoles to lose all sound. The problem seems to be isolated to those who use HDMI to connect the console to their television sets, although one user has complained of the same problem using a SCART connection. For the moment, a quick fix has been discovered that seems to work for many people. If you are experiencing this glitch try the following:
While the Xbox 360 is turned off, remove the hard drive.
Turn on the Xbox 360.
Once the Dashboard loads, replace the hard drive.
Reportedly, this fix only lasts while the Xbox is on. Once you turn it off, you'll have to repeat the steps above to make the sound work again. We've contacted Microsoft and the company is aware of the issue. We'll update this post when we receive more information.

Well, I upgraded recently to the Elite version and use HDMI (less cables). I haven't tried to play any games since the update, so I do not know if it is affecting me and every HDMI user out there.

I thought all of them had the same connection. I didn't realize that they added a specific hdmi port to the system I just thought they all had microsofts proprietary connection. If thats the case then no it doesn't have hdmi.

Yeah, there'd be an HDMI port just above the A/V port.
Seems weird to me that they're putting new manf dates on HDMI-less units. Either they need to stop producing them (as I imagine that would lessen the expense overall) or stop calling them "new" if they are simply refurbished.
So did everyone notice the triggers and bumper buttons help scroll through the dash faster? For example if you are on the 'My Xbox' tab and hit the right bumper button, it fast scrolls to the right and lands on the HD-DVD drive. Pretty cool.

Play the demo of In the Pit just because it is kind of unique.
Then play the demo and buy the puzzle game Blow. I have been hyping to everyone i know - i think it is an extremely well done puzzle game for 400 points. It even has a decent art style and soundtrack.

That is not always true. If its RROD then yes but, some failures are repaired. I wrote down the serial number of my last unit and the same one was returned. YMMV of course.

Finally opened my 360 on Saturday. That dvd drive is loud as hell. Glad I got it after the download to hard drive feature was implemented or I would have gone crazy from the noise.
On another note, I thought new 360's came with a free month of xbox live gold? I used my old xbox account that I used to have and I'm guessing I need to make a new account to get a free month of live gold?

The month code should be good for any user, not just new ones. Just log into your profile and find the 'redeem code' option in the marketplace and put it in and you are good to go.

Does it really matter what gamertag you use if you are just trying it out? You don't have to get rid of your old one, just create a new profile with a new gamertag. Try it for a month, if you like it, buy a subscription for your old gamertag.

Go to your local Blockbuster and look thru the numerous GTAIV copies that are now for sale used. Each had a 1 month trial code in them. Perhaps you can persuade an employee to let you have one (or 50 or so like my store manager did)

Are you saying that you had a GamerTAG (from the original Xbox) that remained continuously active before you migrated it over to the 360?
I was on a 2-month trial from my Xbox when I migrated the GT over to my 360. The remaining FREE time just converted to a Gold membership.
EDIT: I guess I can see your point now. Existing LIVE members who migrated didn't get a FREE month? That kinda stinks. Totally different from my situation. I hadn't maintained a continuous GT(had 2 or 3 month trials), friends list, etc until I got my 360 -- almost 2 years now.

Sounding rude but not meaning to...check the manual. You have to press the button on the bottom and the button on the 360 but you have to do it in a certain order. It's in the Lips manual and the mic manual.

Any game that is smart about caching to the HD (Halo 3, for example) can potentially be slower loading when playing from the HD. It would not surprise me if we see patches for these games so that they no longer cache to the HD if the game is running from the HD. In fact, I'll be disappointed if we don't.

Try clearing your cache and see if that helps
The full instructions on how to perform the cache clear are: Go to the system blade and then memory. Press Y on either the HDD or a MU and then press X, X, Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X, X. Once you do this a blade will pop up saying: This will perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices. Do you want to continue? Select yes or no

The new dashboard killed my wireless for some reason. I was using the old XBox wireless adapter with it before and it was a little weird (you had to restart it every time you turned on the 360), but it worked. Now it will no longer connect.
I finally said to hell with it and ran a wire through the house to the living room. Since I now have it hooked up that way I have added TVersity and PlayOn to my PC and I'm really impressed. TVersity does a great job of streaming video podcasts and PlayOn is great for Hulu. Definitely paying the 30 dollars for that one.

I'd appreciate any help. I tried both mics that come with it and got the same result, so it doesn't seem to be a defective mic.
There's a power button at the bottom and holding and pressing makes the mic flash intermittently. Pressing and holding again make it flash faster. Pressing and holding it and doing that various more times and cursing at it make it turn off.
10 minutes with XBOX customer support and I'm on hold again while he goes to find out more info. Still no luck.
CSR: Did it come with a manual?
Me: Yes. There are no mic troubleshooting tips. It just says to shake it during a song to activate it.
CSR: I would not recommend shaking it.
Me: That's what the manual says, actual words, shake it gently to make it connect.
CSR: I see ma'am.
So he comes back and asks me:
CSR: So what happened?
Me: I ... held.
CSR: Does it work now?
Me: Nope.
So now I'm contacting Inis, the manufacturer. I'm really starting to appreciate wired mics.

Exactly. Deb, please refer to the post I gave you last week with the link to xbox.com on how to synch wireless controllers with the console.
The wireless mics, just like the wireless controllers, need to know what 360 they're supposed to be talking with. Out of the box, they're blank slates.

Well FINALLY I figured it out. There's a second manual that deals with just mics (which are MS made, not Inis made), and while it didn't work exactly like it said, it pointed me in the right direction.
1. Press and hold power button until mic starts flashing.
2. (this step wasn't in the manual) Press and hold power button until mic starts flashing faster
3. Click the sync button on the console
The mic will turn red. Blue when you sing. It didn't work with just steps 1 and 3 for me like the manual said, but works like a charm with step 2. Just like bluetooth cell phone headsets.

There's the problem what the lyric pointer is not synced directly with the words, so that the pointer (the one that calculates your points) is ahead of the artist singing, so you have to go by the pointer and not the artist singing. There's a forum where this is being discussed and they have found no way to calibrate it so that the singing matches the word pointer.

Well FINALLY I figured it out.
1. Press and hold power button until mic starts flashing.
2. (this step wasn't in the manual) Press and hold power button until mic starts flashing faster
3. Click the sync button on the console
