A couple of recent posts on AICN have started to point to a new Oz project by John Boorman (Deliverance, Excalibur). This is supposed to be a more faithful-to-the-source than the MGM classic and the little bit I am seeing is intriguing. I'll be keeping my eye out for this one.

love the artwork/character design - I had to peek!

The artwork is great. I'm a fan of the original film so I'm intrigued by this.

This could be interesting. I'm a bit surprised John Boorman is directing - didn't even know he was still around.

This is not needed. Nothing looks or sounds good about this but I'm sure it'll make a couple hundred millions of dollars.

Well it has to be better than Tin-Man.

Or the Wiz.

But in the original novel, the Emerald City wasn't actually green -- the Wizard made everyone wear tinted glasses.

But in the original novel, the Emerald City wasn't actually green -- the Wizard made everyone wear tinted glasses. This is correct, but the outside walls are green -- so the pictures still fit within the context of the story.

I'm very excited by this concept, but Boorman seems like an odd name to be behind all this.

This is not needed.

An accurate adaptation most certainly is needed -- drop Professor Marvel and the "It was all a dream" ending, and add back the Quadlings.

Then do the sequels.

They need to make it live action then if they are doing this. I'm not gonna watch some terrible CGI thing that looks like Beowulf or something. Whats the point of watching this if its a cartoon?

The artwork is sweeeet!

I think there is lots of potential for this.

Beowulf was crappy motion capture. The concept art here looks more cartoony, which is fine for the Oz series.

A good movie is a good movie regardless of whether it's live action or animated.

Awesome news! I've been waiting for a more faithful adaptation of the Oz books. Can't wait to see it.

Weren't there quite a few Oz books?

Baum wrote 14 in total, but there were a ton more from other writers:

The movie Return to Oz was based on the second and third books.

I hope John Boorman dies of liver cancer. It is supposed to be the most painful type of cancer.

Clearly, neither of you have seen Boorman's Zardoz!

(And really, if you haven't, you should keep it that way.)

Judging from the pics, I could actually see this working. Remaking the '39 version live action would be foolhardy, but Boorman has shown that he could make a definitive adaption of a literary classic before; I'm looking forward to it.

When i seen the pick of The Tin Man I thought Wall*E

I was thinking more like Marvin the paranoid android from the movie remake of Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy!
