NEW YORK (Billboard) – Bruce Springsteen's next album is expected for release around the time of Barack Obama's presidential inauguration in January, according to the fan Web site Backstreets.com ( http://www.backstreets.com ).

The follow-up to 2007's "Magic" will likely contain the song "Workin' on a Dream," which Springsteen debuted last weekend at an Obama rally in Cleveland.

No other information is known about the project, and his representative was unavailable for comment. Springsteen is known to have had a wealth of material left over from "Magic" sessions with producer Brendan O'Brien, but it's unknown whether any of those songs will make the cut.

The rocker campaigned tirelessly for Obama during the homestretch of the election, playing fundraisers and rallies across the country. Thursday night, he will perform at New York's Town Hall as part of the Stand Up for Heroes benefit, alongside his wife Patti Scialfa and comedians Whoopi Goldberg and Ricky Gervais.

Great news! Hope he decides to use a better form of CD packaging instead of that crappy cardboard sleeve he used on Magic, but he probably won't.

New Springsteen album: good news.
Brendan O'Brien as possible producer: not so much.

Magic was a damn good album, and I imagine this one could be one of his most hopeful albums given the circumstances (Magic itself was his lightest lyrically since Born to Run). Hopefully it means another tour, cause I missed him this time around and I've been aching to go to a Springsteen gig for some time now. Of course, he'll probably tour regardless because next year will be his 60th birthday, so I expect a whole lotta self-deprecation while he's up there rocking harder than 20 year olds.

FROM PITCHFORK:

Bruce Springsteen Unveils New Album

A little over a year since the release of Magic, his first LP with the E Street Band in five years, Bruce Springsteen and said E Street Band will-- as rumored-- return with a new LP in January.

Entitled Working on a Dream, the disc is due January 27 from Columbia. Springsteen once again worked with producer Brendan O'Brien on the album, which was primarily recorded and mixed at O'Brien's Atlanta studio Southern Tracks.

According to Springsteen, the set was born of pure creative momentum. "Towards the end of recording Magic, excited by the return to pop production sounds, I continued writing. When my friend producer Brendan O'Brien heard the new songs, he said, 'Let's keep going.' Over the course of the next year, that's just what we did, recording with the E Street Band during the breaks on last year's tour. I hope Working on a Dream has [captured] the energy of the band fresh off the road from some of the most exciting shows we've ever done. All the songs were written quickly, we usually used one of our first few takes, and we all had a blast making this one from beginning to end." Duly noted.

The album's last two cuts-- "The Wrestler", from the Darren Aronofsky film of the same name, and the recently Forkcasted "A Night With the Jersey Devil"-- are being referred to as "bonus tracks," so make of that what you will.

If you happened to watch Tony Romo justify his existence as the Cowboys tackled the Redskins yesterday, you've already heard the album's title track (although the apostrophe in "Working" seems to have vanished). And you can probably place a little side bet come Super Bowl Sunday that Bruce and the band will knock out the tune when they take the stage at the half. At the moment, that's Bruce's only scheduled live appearance, though it's hard to imagine the guy passing up a chance to take these tunes for a spin around the arena circuit.

Working On A Dream is now available as a free download exclusively at itunes store. It's not bad, if not exactly screaming with hit single potential. It's light and pleasent. Has a classic, simple Springsteen hook.

Why does this song sound so familiar? Has he been playing it on tour or something?

I've never heard of the move "The Wrestler", but apparently that last bonus track is the title song. Bruce just picked up a Golden Globe nomination for it.

It's supposed to be Mickey Rourke's comeback film. He was nominated for best actor too. Never thought that would ever happen.

The song from the Wrestler is great, so I hope the rest of the album is good too. I was pretty disappointed in Magic. It sounded like Bruce watering himself down to sound more like modern rock. I hope he returns to form a little for this one.

Re: Bruce Springsteen: New Album - January 2009

Latest rumor has Springsteen playing at Obama's inauguration. Actually, it's a free show on the previous Sunday, at the Lincoln Memorial, and is to be broadcast on HBO (which will be available for free for all viewers).

Also, there's plans for a 6-month tour, starting tentatively in March.

Free Springsteen DLC For Guitar Hero

Just read this and find it very exciting news:

Activision announced that two Bruce Springsteen songs will be available for Guitar Hero World Tour on January 27. The release of the two songs, "Born to Run" and "My Lucky Day," coincides with the release of Springsteen's new album Working on a Dream.

The songs will be available for free during the first week. After that, from February 5 on, the songs will be available as a pack on the Xbox Live Marketplace for 320 Microsoft Points ($3.99) and the PlayStation Store for $3.99, and as singles on the Wii for 200 Wii Points ($2) each.
Born To Run is my favorite song of all time, so this is pretty great news.

Checked out rec.music.artists.springsteen newsgroup and there is a lot of hate building for this album among the hardcore fanbase. Mostly they're saying it's too pop and the lyrics suck.

Actually, it's mostly a handful of people, one of whom is posting under multiple aliases and spam-trolling the NG. RMAS isn't too pleasant a place to be these days...

His hardcore fanbase tends to hate on anything he's done since 1982. You should hear what they say about his wife.
