Queensryche - "American Soldier" concept album(Spring 2009)
QUEENSRYCHE SET TO UNVEIL AMERICAN SOLDIER THIS SPRING
Epic Concept Album Looks At War From The Soldier’s Perspective; Spring Tour Of U.S. To Follow
LOS ANGELES — Queensr˙che is currently in the studio putting the finishing touches on their 12th studio album, AMERICAN SOLDIER. The concept album, due this spring from Rhino/Atco, finds the band once again tackling some heavy subject matter, this time focusing on telling the story of war from a firsthand perspective. Singer and chief songwriter Geoff Tate has spent the last few years conducting extensive interviews with veterans and has crafted their thoughts into this epic tale. AMERICAN SOLDIER examines American wars from World War II through Iraq from the viewpoint of those in the trenches and on the frontlines. Following the album’s release, Queensr˙che plan to present tracks from the album live on an extensive spring tour of the U.S., with international dates to follow later in 2009. The first date of the tour will be a hometown gig at Seattle’s Snoqualmie Casino on April 16.
“Queensr˙che has always had incredible support from members of the Armed Services,” says Tate. “It seems like after every show, I’d end up speaking with a fan that was or had been involved with the military. The more and more I began to hear their accounts and feelings, the more I really felt a conviction to tell their story. Over the last two years, I’ve conducted dozens of one-on-one interviews with veterans of many different American wars. I listened to their amazing and moving recounts and did my best to examine war through their eyes.”

We'll see. It could either be the next step in their re-birth after a decent Mindcrime II, or maybe the final in their coffin if it is shitty like Tribe. Either way, I hope they do another club tour. It was great earlier this year.

Ditto. HITNF was trying too hard to be grunge-esque, in my opinion.
My favorite Queensryche album? Rage For Order. The old syndicated metal radio station Z-Rock (107.3, WCZR Cleveland!!) used to play "Take Hold of the Flame" a lot, and I dug this "new" band (it was 1986, after all), so I went to the record store (remember those?) and picked up Rage. Played it until it broke, went out and bought it again. Know what? Fuck it. Gonna listen to it now.
I will give American Soldier a shot, but, I forecast a political statement with a side order of Bush indictments. Why can't mysticism and lore make its way back into metal? Just tell a story; leave politics to C-SPAN.

Roxx,
I have read countless posts from countless sites and have yet to be inspired to respond. Until now...
Several things: I forgot about Z-Rock!; Rage was waaaaaay ahead of it's time; it's time for Queensryche, Tate in particular, to put politics aside and just play. The political attacks have become personal views of the Bush admin, rather than observations of the political landscape. Somehow, it just seems silly that we should care what G. Tate thinks about G. Bush. Anyway, I worry about the contents of this album. If it is an indictment of Bush politics, I'm simply not interested. An accurate depiction of the how frightening war must be, how painful to be away from home or to lose a friend: interesting. A jaded view of "blood for oil" narrow-minded liberalism will be a big turn-off. Simply put, bring back the emotion that set this band apart. I think Tate missed the whole appeal of Mindcrime. The draw, for me, had nothing to do with politics. It was the emotional state of mind of Nikki that made the album interesting.

In ten years on this forum there are two things I have learned:
1. Any Pixar thread will eventually devolve into people posting a list of their favorites and least favorites.
2. Any thread mentioning Queensryche will devolve into "they've sucked since Promised Land" posts.
Talk about beating a dead horse.

Agree with you HardRoxx88 "Take Hold Of The Flame" is a great tune pretty close to my favorite Queensryche song, and i will definately give "American Soldier" a listen who knows we may love it, alot of my favorite 80's hard rock bands have impressed me lately for example...
Winger - IV
Motley Crue - Saints of Los Angeles
Scorpions - "Unbreakable" and "Humanity Hour 1"
Tesla - "Into The Now" and "Forever More"

Well I'll tell you what, I never voiced my opinion about QR until they did OM2. HITNF was Ok but not nearly as good as what came before. Q2K was weak, but I wanted to see them pull themselves together. Tribe showed they might have something left.
Then they lost all my respect for them when they did that rehash crap with OM2. It just felt like a cheap ploy to cash in on the predecessor's success. Then we get a covers album and now ANOTHER concept record. I used to love QR for being a groundbreaking band which tried something different each record. Now they're just stuck in a rut. Oh well, I guess nothing lasts forever. I of course will hear this new one, but I am not expecting anything that sounds different from OM2.
Now serving horse steaks.

Like OMII, you can pre-order at queensryche.com and get an autographed poster with your order. $18.98 + shipping. I'm passing on this one, but I think my Mindcrime 2 order came to about $23 total.

Good god, stop the whining of "oh noes, it might be a mean liberal album." You know what? It's probably going to contain some criticism of the Bush administration. I'm sure - no, I know - that through the eyes of many a soldier, it was a bad war that saw our troops sent into a bad situation with next to planning and very little support in the way of manpower and materials.
News flash - you can criticize Bush and not be a liberal.
Anyhow...
HITNF is the last release I liked all the way through. I think the loss of Chris DeGarmo hurts the band more than they want to admit. Q2K was godawful except for maybe Burning Man. Tribe was just plain horrid. Mindcrime 2 was OK... but there was nothing on it to make me go "man, I just have to throw that one back into my CD player again!"
The greatest hits album... eh. I can make a better one. And I can make it with MP3 tracks to give me a longer play list. The cover album never thrilled me. Too many songs that I really didn't care about.

I'm a big Queensryche fan, but I'm not liking the 2 new songs from American Soldier that are having some radio play ("If I Were King" and "Unafraid")
Way too much overtalk soldier voices. I fear the whole album is going to be this way.

I just listened to "If I Were King" and it pretty much sucks. So boring. That song isn't gonna convince any of the fans they've lost over the last few albums to come back to the fold.

Back to 'Walk in the Shadows" for me, when they were good. Very disappointed in the first 2 songs out from the new one.
They sorely miss Chris DeGarmo's influence and style. (well I do anyway)

From the 7 songs I have heard, the political BS is not on this cd.(finally)
The more I listen the more I hear this as a PL era disc. But I haven't heard all the songs yet, just 7.
