NLCS... thread title, FAIL

This is going to be a good match up. Dodgers have the managing edge but the Phillie's are the more talented team. This series might be worth seeing just to see when playoff Brad Lidge will pitch to playoff Manny Ramierez. Over/Under on how far the ball will go... Canada.

Dodgers in 6!

I'm afraid of Hamels and Lidge, but I think the rest of the Dodgers starters and bullpen is better then the Phills, unless people are really underrating Lowe, Billingsley, and Kuroda.

I'm deeply afraid of Howard, Utley, or Burrell getting hot and smoking a few balls though which I think could get to the Dodgers if they start trailing early.

While I agree that the Dodgers have the better rotation and pen (outside of closer), the Phillies have an important advantage in how they match up -- the Dodgers have no lefty starters and only have two lefties in the pen. That's a pretty big deal to a team like the Phillies that's lefty-dominated in the middle of the lineup.

I'd love to see Manny and Joe get to the WS. I figure if the Rays can play LA...it will be win/win. F' you to BOS and NYY if LA wins, and a great story if the Rays pull it out. The only downside to the Rays will be the bandwagon fans, but they still won't be as bad as CHI and BOS bandwagoners.

For some reason the Phillies were able to shut down Manny in their 4 game series at Home late in the season, and that is why they were able to sweep the Dodgers.

I think the Phillies have more talent, and should win the series, but unless Utley & Howard start hitting, I think the Dodgers may win this series.

The Phils were 60-48 against right handers this season, 32-22 against left handers. So, they've been tough either way. And as we saw when they faced Sabathia, you can shut down Utley/Howard and they have enough offense to still beat you.

This will be an enjoyable series to watch. Both teams have some advantages going their way. I'm just hopeful (and expecting) the series go 6 or 7 games. The Division series matchups were so lopsided, I'm ready for things to tighten up.

I would love to see the Phils play their ex-'genius' manager Terry Francona. I always get annoyed when Peter Gammons calls him one of the best managers in Baseball as I didn't hear that from him when Francona lost 85+ games for the Phillies all four years he coached for them. It seems like he turned into a genius when he started managing a 140 million dollar payroll:)

I don't really care that they changed the name but two problems that I have with it:

1- If I have to hear one more announcer say "The Rays got rid of the Devil and are now in the playoffs" or something along those lines I will eat that announcers lunch.

2- Now they're just The Rays. No longer the fish the Devil Ray but just Rays. Why not change the name to The Sting Rays? No.. they decided to stick with Rays and now they're like sunshine rays (or a bunch of guys named Raymond?). That's a pretty lame name for a baseball team.

Interesting series coming up. Dodger pitchers suck against lefty hitters in 2008 (.268 BAA / 1.42 WHIP compared with .239/1.19 for righties) which isn't good since Rollins, Howard, and Utley are all lefty or switch hitters and most of the Dodgers are right-handed hurlers.

Dodger pitchers didn't have to face any real lefties vs the Cubs.

(or real righties for that matter, yuk yuk yuk)

Half joking, half serious I guess. I don't pay enough attention to baseball outside of regular news and standings to really make a comment like I know whats happening, but it certainly seems that as soon as your star starts to fade a bit in Boston (and NY for that matter, outside of Jeter) everyone turns on you.

The only thing that Manny has ever done that I find disgusting was the recent assault on the Traveling Secretary for Boston. The fact that he wasn't suspended for that was a real travesty. Besides that, the only thing Manny is really guilty of is not taking the game as seriously as the Boston media would have liked.

The dude is a career .314 / .411 / .593 hitter, who has hit 30+ HR for 12 of the last 14 years. I'm an O's fan and the way Boston treated Manny was completely uncalled for, I'll take him in left field any day.

I didn't catch the last two games because of work, but tensions certainly seem high with the inside stuff that the Phillies are throwing. Glad the Dodgers retaliated, and it's funny since the announcers kept talking about it.

I applaud Victorino for understanding why that pitch went where it did though. That seemed like it could have been a lot worse.

If you think they're douche bags for that, I'd hope you think Myers or Moyer are the next step worse for throwing behind Manny and head hunting Martin (I don't really think they're douches, just using an example). Gimmie a break

Phillies fan here, but if the Rays win tonight, I think a Phils/Rays series is going 7 games. I think the Dodgers really showed why they only won 84 games this year, and take Manny out of that lineup, and they are not even a playoff team. I am not taking away anything from the Phils win, but they have had an easy road to the World Series, as the Brewers were spent after using Sabbathia every 3 days and not having Sheets. The Dodgers lineup sucks except Manny, and their bullpen was overrated too. The Cubs were the team I really thought the Phils would have trouble with, but they are still...the Cubs.

Don't underestimate the Rays, they have the pitching and the lineup, and they are playing like the Phillies right now, not afraid of anyone. The Phils can't rely on just the Homerun ball if they are going to beat the Rays. As I said, this series is going 7.

There will be alot of misery if the Phils lose, as all my friends & co-workers today think the Phillies are going to win the World Series in 5 or 6 games. It is making me nervous, because they are alittle bit cocky after last night, and I think we need to realize Tampa is alot better then LA. I am not getting too ahead of myself in thinking the Phils are going to win it all, as I do remember that Tampa/Eagles NFC Championship in 2002 that we all thought Tampa couldn't walk into Philly in January and beat us.

That's pretty stupid. The Dodgers lineup isn't that bad without Manny, although he certainly solidifies it and gives them an offensive threat. I think their young age just caught up with them and a lot of the young guys just struggled when they needed to come up big both offensively and defensively. Phils are a better team and they showed it, but I don't think they necessarily had it easy. Game 1 and 5 just slipped away from LA.

I'm with you on this one. Rays take it all by the 6th game.

10-16-08, 12:28 PM
First, I think BOS is done. Rays win in game 6.

I am going to go with the Phillies in 6 for the WS Title. I think that Hamels is good for 2 wins in the WS, as the Phils should be able to come up with 2-3 runs against anyone the Rays throw out there. I think Myers is good for at least 1 win out of his two games. That leaves the Phils needing one victory from either Blanton or Moyer while at home. I think it can be done.

The key for the Phillies is to keep the Rays long-ball in check. If the Myers wins game 2 in TB, the Phils may take it in 5. If Myers loses game 2, it will go to 6 with Myers winning game 6.

How am I homer because I think calling a player a douche bag or asshole for showing their frustration in the dug out is retarded? Manny being a douche for dogging it in Boston is deserved. Thinking Martin or Lowe being a douche for slamming a Gatorade bottle is stupid as hell. Like I said earlier, I hope you think Myers and the other dude that knocked down Martin are douches too for their actions on the field. Then again, you also think everyone is dying to see Philly in the WS more then LA or Boston, so who's the homer? Sheesh.

As far as the fans here, there really aren't that many bandwagon Dodger fans. There are a lot of bandwagon Angel fans after 2002 (a lot which are now full converts from what I can tell), but the Dodger fan base is fairly solid, although made up largely of the type I mentioned earlier. People just aren't that into sports here, and everyone knows it. Ask anyone in Southern California that posts here on this forum. I'm not bragging, it's just the truth. It's probably why attendance over there for the Florida teams is similar considering the type of lives people live, rich areas, nightlife, things like that. People just grow up doing a lot of things other then watching sports and treat sports as a side attraction, not really because they're on the bandwagon.

Did I write that it was non-existent there? :hscratch: And surely you don't think the night life and patrons in Philly is the same as Hollywood

Since you're such a Philly guy, maybe Cole Hamels will help :)

Hamels grew up near San Diego as a Dodgers fan and embodies the stereotype of the laid-back Southern Californian.

"Growing up on the West Coast, I think there's more to do," he said. "So when you have good weather, you can be at the beach. You can be mountain biking ... versus the East Coast, where I think it's kind of the history and the longtime evolution of sports."

Whereas Phillies fans completely absorb themselves in the game, the players' statistics and how well or poorly they're playing, it's not that way out here.

"The West Coast, it's more of a business venture when you take somebody to a game," Hamels said. "You're almost trying to break the next business deal. On the East Coast, everybody is wearing a jersey versus a suit and a tie, and they're eating the hot dogs and everything. The East Coast, they're just more passionate and more involved and that brings out the love of the game a little bit more."
