I was hanging out with a friend this weekend when the topic of politics came up. This guy was going off about his candidate with great big dewy eyes about this great American blah blah. He has some sappy view that here are two of the most dedicated Americans (yes both candidates!!) wanting the opportunity to serve our country.
To be honest I was a bit dumfounded.
Im not politically savvy (dont really know the dirt in every scandal) but my default mode is extreme cynicism over those who choose to pursue the political profession. All of them. In my view the worst most sleazy two faced lawyers become politicians. They arent in it for the good of the country.
Are you guys really this optimistic about 'your guy'? Do you really see them as being BETTER citizens?

Whats the 'correct' way to view modern politicians?
Hint: that's the politician over there with the RPG.

 Politicians are like everyone else. Some of them are in it for the power, money, etc. Some of them are in it because they think they can make the world a better place. Most of them are in it for some combination of the two.
It takes a certain amount of hubris to think you should be President. It also takes a certain amount of humility to be willing to make the sacrifices necessary.

Here is what I think of when I try to picture an honest politician.

Optimistic? Better citizen? No. Lesser of two evils? Yes

If that belief is a common one, it would explain a lot.

I'm with you, I am also dumbfounded when everyone accepts politicians at face value. These politicians aren't genuine, every single gesture is the result of a team of PR people, researchers, strategists, a-la the whole Palin debacle.

I think it was wendersfan on here a while ago who said something to the effect that the politicians he had interacted with were simultaneously like shallow, self-absorbed rock stars and genuine, well-meaning social workers----that strikes me as probably accurate.

With a balance of skepticism and hope. I probably skew a bit more to the skepticism side, but the hope still lingers for me most of the time.

As time goes on and I grow older and older, I'm continually amazed at the moronic situations that modern politicians get themselves into and yet they only barely express a hint of remorse or shame as they continue on in their careers to "serve the American people."
(Examples--John Edwards, Larry Craig, Bill Clinton, Dick Cheney, Ted Kennedy, Gavin Newsom, Antonio Villaraigosa, Kwame Kilpatrick, Tom DeLay and on and on and on.)

Nothing odd about it. I run into people like this all the time. They are the same ones who voted for Reagan twice, Clinton twice and Bush 2 twice and will (unfortunatley) participate in the electing of Obama. They will generally say "I vote for the person". They dont really, but that is what they say. They generally are influenced by who has the wind behind their sails. It appears this year it will be Obama.

They remind me of used car salesmen. And that's how I view them. And I don't think I want an over exuberant 16 year old cheerleader one step away from the center seat.
