Buy any other game for $60. Don't open it and keep your receipt. Lego Batman will ring up at $0.00 (since it'll be the cheapest game with a MSRP of $49.99) and that other game will be a placeholder you can exchange for the same-priced Fallout once it comes out.

I've done that move every year for about four or five years running now.

That makes sense, as it stops people from buying just for the card and then returning so that they have a free gift card. I like it when they deal with things on a case-by-case basis. I bought a wired GH3 bundle on WM.com back in May and then a wireless from Amazon a few days later as an even better deal.

When I went to go return the wired bundle to a local WM, they scanned the item at the door and a little price sticker printed out for nearly $90 - which was more than double what my receipt said. I tucked the receipt in the back pocket and tried for a receiptless return.

They blocked me saying electronics dept requires it now when I said I didn't have the receipt. I pulled it out of my back pocket and said, "Well, I have the packing list. Will that work?" Knowing full well it was the receipt and just got what I paid back.

So, YMMV.

Same here. The only one I'm wanting is Viva Pinata 2 and that's already a budget title so it would be wasted on this sale.

I figure I could get Rock Band 2 (and return it with my other RB2 receipt) but that still leaves a giant ? for the other two games. Doing the RB2 return, and possibly the returns for two later games doesn't sound like it's worth the hassle to me. I'll pick up VP2 used and put whatever else I come up with on the Christmas list(Mirror's Edge? Prince of Persia? Tomb Raider?).

This is all very YMMV, but generally people have only had luck returning the 2 "paid" games, so try to make sure one you want to keep is the free one. Some people don't go for the gift receipts on the other two when returning/exchanging, but some do. It also varies from year to year, so you really won't know until you try.

It's more than that. You probably want to go for something that just came out like NBA 2K9 or Saints Row 2. You won't get $60 for The Force Unleashed.

Manged to get 5 Wii points cards for $11.99. One store had 4 and the other 1. They defintely weren't stocking up on them for the sale as I cleaned out both Northside Toys R Us stores on cards. They also had a $10 table so I picked up Geometry Wars Galaxies, Buzz Hollywood Quiz and Tiger 08 for the PSP for $20.

They had FFIV on sale for $29.99 so I picked it up along with Kirby Super Star Ultra and Sonic Chronicles. My wife also picked up a few $19.99 DS games she has been wanting. Mystery Case Files, Cake Mania 2 and one of those Nancy Drew DS games.

I still want stuff like Disgaea 3 and eventually Fallout 3, but I'm passing on the expensive games for now. I'll probably get Fallout on PC anyway. I can't play games like that with a controller.

I've tried this in every city in which I've lived and never had success with my Best Buys matching this TRU sale. Kudos to anyone that can make it work.

The return trips to TRU have become sort of a ritual. Buy three, request that one particular title be used as the freebie, get gift receipts for all and then make two return trips where I will undoubtedly have to stand at TRU customer service while someone tries to figure out why the system doesn't like the return before the manager inevitably overrides some extremely high level security clearance. Who can't get behind that kind of tradition?

Anyway, while there I remembered Infinite Undiscovery was out and decided to get it as well. Picked up TFU for my will-return-but-won't-cry-if-I-get-stuck-with-it title. Made sure ToV was my free one.

I noticed as she rang up IU that the price changed from $59.99 to $39.99. I thought "weird, but maybe they're taking 1/3 off each game now?". Anyway, she rang up the other two, confirmed that ToV was the free one. I gave her my $10 off $75 coupon and the total (less tax) was $89.98.

Looking at the receipt, I see there's a "$20 OFF SELEC ITEM" line on the IU item. I have no idea where that came from but I'm not complaining. I basically bought a $40 and a $60 title and got a $60 one for free :up:

I don't know if there's a deal on IU (and other "SELEC" games) or if she just fat-fingered and applied some deal for me. Either way, I'm happy I went now.

Little Big Planet is coming up at $45 on circuitcity.com right now (or was earlier, I'm not sure of the latest CAG status). Apparently they are giving away a $15 Gift Card when you pre-order, but Iron Angel on CAG figured out a way to use it instantly on LBP(& Fable 2):

Put the game in your cart, click through to checkout and stop at the credit card screen. Close the browser. Open it back up, go to the site again and instead of clicking on your cart, click the checkout button on the right. Voila, gift card is gone, and the game is now $45. Picked up Lego Indiana Jones, Mario Kart Wii, and Boom Blox, plus an extra Wii Wheel for $116.49 total. If you don't go that route, you can always order Fable 2 and get a $10 gift certificate thru amazon. After tax with CC and gas to pick it up, it amounts to the same think pretty much (if you order future stuff thru Amazon that is).

My local store still didn't get Dead Space in yet, so I picked up Saint's Row 2, LEGO Batman, and Fifa 09 (for a friend).

I might exchange the Saint's Row for Dead Space, not sure yet.

I'll probably head back there before the sale ends to get some more stuff I was waiting on.

Crisis Core was the free game. Note they dropped the price on it to $30. I wanted to get all psp games but that is the only one they had that I wanted. I wasn't sure how lego games play on a handheld so I past on them.

Oh yeah the Seattle area Toys R us was pretty well stocked on ps3 and wii games. The DS section wasn't looking to bad. I don't have a 360 and forgot to look at the PS2 games so I'm not sure how well those were stocked.

I know this isn't related to the TRU thing but may be helpful as well for cheap games:

Microsoft Live Search is offereing a 30% rebate on BIN ebay purchases made with PayPal. Looks like many new/sealed games can be had for < $60 shipped (Dead Space is $56.50 for lowest BIN auction). So Dead Space would be $39.55 shipped after the rebate (wait 60 days for it), vs $40 + tax for each game from TRU.

I used the Live Search discount to just get a new PS3 80GB for $308 shipped.

Just something to think about.

Obviously there is a way to do it. It's called common sense. However, the average employee at TRU is incapable of doing anything unless the computer allows it. I've been through this scenario with this exchange before -- and this is why everyone stresses to make sure that the game you know you're going to keep is the free game. Everyone that's taken part in this sale has dealt with these TRU sales and their animatronic employees at some point. My best advice is to have your friend try again. There are helpful TRU employees but you have to work hard to find them.

Yeah, it has no value on the receipt. You definitely have to be careful what order they scan them.

Why not just rebuy the games in a different order, return all 3 new ones on the old receipt then the original free one on the 2nd receipt where it has value.

And for what it's worth, I had no trouble returning my "free" game today for Dead Space.

Looks like I'm taking a pass this year. I wound up getting Saints Row 2 for about $35 from Gamefly ($10 gift certificate + 10% off), bought NBA 2K9 from Best Buy, and Dead Space should arrive today as a rental from Gamefly. I went looking for Socom: Confrontation yesterday at TRU and they didn't have it, which might be a good thing considering the horror stories I've heard about it.

However, there is a buy 2, get 1 free used sale going on at Gamestop until 10/24. Hmmm, I never did finish Mass Effect...

I think the Wii Card sale was Sun-Mon only though.

I stopped by today and picked up Littlest Pet Shop, Spore, and Singstar Pop 2, and was able to stack a $5 off Pet Shop coupon that was by the register to get all 3 games for $55, plus a free TRU exclusive Pet Shop stylus. All will be saved for Christmas.

No you can't, just for store credit. In order to get a refund, you'd need to return all three.

Anyway, at the last minute, I gave in and bought a secord round. It's a lot of money, but at least I can cancel most of my Amazon preorders now. This round I bought

It is my understanding that as long as it is not the free game, you can take it back and exchange it for one that is equal to the price. I went two separate times and even two different TRU employees suggested the "placeholder" process to me if I didn't see a game I wanted since so many new ones are on the horizon. They just said that it couldn't be the one that rings up free, you have to have your receipt, and it has to be in the next 45 days. This was straight from TRU employees.

If this is real, I would think that someone in the corporation would figure this scam out fairly quickly and put a stop to it. Trades counting as new purchases? It sounds like an employee doesn't know how to work the computer/ register. We've had this thread for years and no one's mentioned this ploy before. If this could really work on a regular basis, I'm thinking that at the very least, someone at CAG would have mentioned it by now.

It makes sense. If you returned the two $60 games with gift receipts, you can get two $60 gift cards in exchange. That could then be used to buy two new games and yes, one new freebie.

I spent a week ruminating over this sale and that angle never occurred to me. I feel kinda foolish now. Too little, too late, at least this year.

Ok, to clear a few things up, I did buy the 3 games during the sale. On the last day of the sale i took back 2, Picked out 2 new ones to exchange and then she offered another free game. So making this deal B1G1 for me. I am sure it was a mistake on the cashiers side but it did ring up simple enough for her. And this is not what i meant to happen. In fact when she told me to go get another game since it would be free i had to ask twice if that was right.
