I just purchased the Graham Nash Songs For Beginer cd/dvd-a set on ebay. I'm having an issue with the dvd-a.
In my Pioneer universal player, which has dvd-a capability, when I
insert the disc the menu comes up fine. However, when I select play the
machine freezes up, to the point that the only thing i can do is unplug
the player to unfreeze it. This is repeatable.
The dvd plays fine in my regular non dvd-a dvd player, also a Pioneer.
The universal player has never before had a problem with dvd-a. Any idea
what's going on?

I may not be thinking straight because your user name is turning me on....
But... My first guess is hardware. Are there any firmware upgrades for your Pioneer universal player that you don't have installed?
Barring that, you may need a 3rd player intervention to determine if you have a hardware or software problem.

Is this anything like Songs for Beginners?

My bad spalang airor!
Checking for a firmware update is a good idea. My only concern is this Pioneer has to be internally flashed to make it region free, rather then through a hand set code. I would be afraid that a firmware update might remove the hack which I have no way to restore.

Rhino is giving me an exchange by mail. They believe it's a bad diisc. I'm very happy with them!

Plays fine in my universal Pioneer 563a. I don't know what model you have, but as suggested in the second post I would check to see that you have the latest firmware. I had to upgrade mine a few years back to overcome similar problems.

BN, When the problem first happened, I did some Googling. It appears there was only 1 firmware update for the dv578a & I think I have that update. It also appears that most people who try to update this particular machine at home trash it. Doing it right appears to require a pc, a serial cable & opening up the puppy to get to the inside serial port.
If you have more info on this, I'd appreciate it. When I bought the unit, the region free firmware was preloaded by the seller on ebay. This is the ONLY disc/title the unit's ever had an issue with.

Rhino's now stating that there is a known issue with this release (& 1 other release they didn't name) & some Pioneer players. They've offered an exchange for a different title or a refund.
