You do not need to subscribe however for M rated games you have to register.

One of the best games ever. If I didn't already have it, I'd download it.

I recommend Fallout, which is also free, if you haven't played it either.

The original Deus Ex is a masterpiece. The sequel Invisible War is a master-turd.

Deus Ex is an excellent example of how to truly blend RPG and FPS together.... something some newer games like Bioshock failed to do. Deus Ex also was the first game (that I recall anyway) that did not require you to find keycards to unlock doors (although you could if you really wanted to do so). If you have a rocket launcher or grenade, blow the mother ****ing door down...

The original Deus Ex also had some fairly deep role playing. You could play as a variety of different character types. You could build your character up to be a small arms expert, a melee expert, a sniper, a stealth expert, or even a pacifist who doesn't engage in combat. The game isn't essentially non-linear, but there are multiple pathways you can take through each section of the game. You will also have to make some decisions that will have repercussions later. For instance, if a main character dies or you save him/her, the story will actually change. Your actions are not merely frivolous like in most other games.

There's a bunch of things like that that Deus Ex did perfectly, but newer games have sadly ignored.

easily the best game I have played in the last 10 years.

If you want a challenge, Don't put points into your computer/hacking skills, and don't rely on your rifle skills

taffer is always saying he hated Deus Ex: IW. It was quite fun. It was different, but it made you think more. The universal ammo feature that many hated was one of my favorite parts of the game.

Ask him about Thief Deadly Shadows or even Fallout 3. Both are "master turds" in his eyes.

IW made you think more than the original? Seriously? IW eliminated most of the RPG aspects of the original and just became a generic sci-fi FPS using the Deux Ex characters.

I never said I hated Thief: DS though. It isn't as good as the first two Thief games, but DS is decent and keeps the overall Thief atmosphere. Plus, the best Thief mission in the series is from DS (the Shalebridge Cradle.... *shudders just thinking about the creepiness of that place*).

Both IW and DS are perfect examples of "dumbing down PC games for the more simple console experience." The original Deus Ex and first two Thief games were deep and complicated. IW and DS were huge step downs in complexity.

I do hate IW because it really does seem like a generic and bland FPS that just happens to use the Deus Ex name. I do enjoy DS however because while it was dumbed down, it is still pretty fun and the storyline is an interesting and fitting end to Garrett's story.

Another more example.... compare the new Civ: Rev game to Civ 4. Civ 4 is so much more deep and complicated it isn't even funny. Civ: Rev is still pretty fun, but compared to Civ 4, there is no denying it was severely dumbed down.

As for Fallout 3, I won't say it is a "master-turd" yet since I haven't actually played it, but I am not that optimistic. I never have been a fan of Bethesda or the Elder Scrolls series, and I don't like the way that Fallout 3 resembles Elder Scrolls. To me, Fallout is a 2d isometric completely turn-based game. Plus, the first two Fallout games were designed for PC gamers. Fallout 3 is designed for console gamers (with a PC port, but not actually designed for PC gamers in mind). Since console games are really, if ever, as complex as PC games, I doubt that Fallout 3 will truly be as deep and complex as the first two games. Yeah, I know I am a grumpy old gamer complaining about how things were so much better in the past....

And so ends my topic derailment..

Damn! Gametap does not support 64-bit systems. Although some of the arcade games will play, most will not even allow you to download.

As much as I always chuckle about how taffer seems to always come up with a history lesson everytime with have a new sequel to a classic PC game, he's right. Invisible War sucks compared to the original Deus Ex.

You know what was fun about Deus Ex?

The fact that the further you got the bigger the saves got, at one point my save game directory was 14 gigs.

We all have our quirks. Some of us give history lessons on classic PC games, and some constantly talk about how we are too busy with grad school to play video games.

That can't be right. Maybe something is wrong with your game. When Deus Ex originally came out, I think the average hard drive was around 10 GB total. My first PC which I bought in '98 was used to play Deus Ex, and that PC had a whooping 8 GB hard drive.

He probably saves excessively. I just restarted the game and I think I've gotten up to 200 MB of saves.

I'd forgotten how much fun this game is - and I was pleased to see that there's a way to get the resolution to be 1680 x 1050, and in proper widescreen - not stretched. Other than the faces, the game looks pretty good for its age.

Deus Ex supports widescreen resolutions? It really was ahead of its time...

There are games much newer than it that don't support widescreen.

Well, it does, but not natively. You just need to edit two of the .ini files - one to force the resolution change and the other to change the field of view to be larger. The end result looks pretty good, though. Obviously the textures are still fairly low-res, but it looks better than I remember it looking the last time I played it.
