I know the Horror Movie Challenge just started, but when checking for last year's thread, I did post the discussion thread on October 7th, this is a few days early but I really wanted to start it now.

2007 Lists Thread (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-talk/517498-3rd-annual-holiday-movie-challenge-lists-go-here.html)

OFFICIAL RULES

-Movies, TV shows/specials, Short Films & Cartoons Count

-The movie or TV show DOES NOT need to be holiday oriented. It could simply take place during the holiday season (i.e. Batman Returns, Gremlins, Die Hard, etc.)

-Although the movie doesn't have to take place during the holiday season, a MAJORITY of the film HAS to take place during the holiday season. No movies with just one scene during the holiday season. If you're not sure, ASK!

-Any holiday from Thanksgiving through New Years Day may count

-A film can only be viewed once, UNLESS you watch it and then watched it again with a commentary

-This year there won't be a goal, but instead a personal goal. Whatever you want your goal to be go for it. For returning participants maybe your goal should be to beat a previous year's goal.

-A new addition to this year's challenge, as suggested by bluelitespecial is a THREE Wild Card Option. This is here to include movies you might watch as a tradition during the holidays. My family used to watch Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory every Thanksgiving. So ANY movie is allowed, up to THREE. Thanks bluelitespecial

-PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE number your lists!

It doesn't matter how you see the film, VHS, DVD, Laserdisc, Theatrical release, it will be counted. Just have fun.

This year the challenge has been extended by 1 day to include all of New Years Day.

List thread is now up here (http://forum.dvdtalk.com/dvd-talk/544100-4th-annual-holiday-movie-challenge-lists-go-here.html#post9083213)

Sure, I'll toss my hat in for this one. I don't think I participated last year, but my gf and I have been planning to watch a lot of Christmas movies in Dec, so I'll have some fun with it while I'm at it.

I'm glad we're starting on the 17th, that gives us 10 days to get Thanksgiving movies in (we only had 3 last year).

I thought of a new category for the checklist: Watch a Christmas Movie that takes place during a war or has a war scene. There are a surprising number of them, off the top of my head I can think of A MIDNIGHT CLEAR, JOYEAUX NOEL, and even WHITE CHRISTMAS.

Also, how do participants feel about movies taking place during December? Pearl Harbor Day really isn't an official holiday, but if you want to commemorate the attack on Pearl Harbor by watching PEARL HARBOR or TORA, TORA, TORA on December 7 or BATTLE OF THE BULGE or BATTLEGROUND in early December, should that count towards the challenge?

One idea I wish we could add to the challenge would be to watch movies that are a holiday tradition to you but they might not be christmas movies, for example I always watch the Lord of the Rings Trilogy during the holiday season. Maybe have a three wild card option for this.

The thing is, though, there are so many Thanksgiving movies that one could watch (movies about families getting together Thanksgiving have become a sub-genre unot themselves) and starting it the Monday before Thanksgiving doesn't even give us a weekend to get them in. I would prefer starting on the 17th as originally stated, or the 20th or 21st.

Trevor
10-05-08, 08:55 PM
That's a good point. No one like to watch Thanksgiving things after Thanksgiving Thursday, we all move on to Christmas then.

There is so much Thanksgiving content out there that 4 work days really aren't enough time to get much in.

RobCA

No one like to watch Thanksgiving things after Thanksgiving Thursday, we all move on to Christmas then. Last year, I started watching Christmas stuff the day after Thanksgiving... and ran out of stuff to watch on December 14th. (I only watch stuff I own on DVD, a couple of things on VHS, and any holiday-themed episodes of the handful of new shows I watch on TV) So this year, regardless of when the challenge starts, I'm not going to start watching any of my Christmas stuff until December 1st.

I'm going to stick with the 24th starting date, because every year I keep changing the dates, but I want to stick to the tradition of starting the Monday before Thanksgiving. I did change the end date this year (last year the last day was 12/31).

If anyone is interested Fye has this exclusive Family Guy Christmas dvd. It has Family Guy's only Christmas episode, but also includes last year's American Dad Christmas Episode that should have been on the volume three set. I am kind of pissed that the AD christmas show should have been on the last box set, but this was only $9.99 so I got it.

Wow. How did I miss this thread? I don't think I'll be anywhere near 200 like I was last year. Last year I tried to watch 1 of every possible sitcom or cartoon that had a holiday theme. There are probably only a handful of shows now that I haven't tapped into. I'll try to knock out as many holiday themed DVDs I have. I should have deferred Gremlins from the October Horror Movie Challenge to this challenge. Oh well.

Has anyone started thinking about their lists yet?

I didn't print my list out, but I have it saved as a text file in Notepad, and have been adding to it as I buy new stuff. I think I missed some of the qualifying TV show episodes on new sets I bought; I should check on that pretty soon. I know last year, I had 13 Christmas movies to watch, and this year, I have 20. In fact, here are the current counts on what I have to watch. I'm not saying I'll watch all of this, but this is just the stuff I own:

Thanksgiving movies: 5
Thanksgiving TV shows: 40

Christmas movies: 20
Christmas TV specials: 14
Christmas & New Year's TV shows: 120

...for a grand total of 199. Plus, the handful of shows I watch on TV usually have some holiday-themed episodes as well.

Forgot to mention, I bought It's a Wonderful Life back in April, but have held off on watching it. I've never seen it before (-eek-) so I figured I should wait until it's closer to Christmas before I finally watch it for the first time.

I'm looking forward to finally seeing what all the fuss is about! :)

Rob

We used to watch It's a Wonderful Life every single Christmas Eve before we could open presents. After about 10 years in a row, it got a little obnoxious and we kind of nixed that tradition. That was about 15 years ago, so I hadn't seen since then. I watched it again last year, and it was just amazing. I have a lot more appreciation for it now that I am an adult.

Trevor
10-13-08, 11:23 AM
I could see where watching it every Christmas Eve would be annoying as a kid. But now that I'm old enough to appreciate it, I can't imagine not watching it at least once per year.

Numes
10-13-08, 11:29 AM
There are only a few movies that I can watch once every year. In general, I need at least 2 years between movie viewings. The only movies that I seem to watch every year are Christmas Vacation, A Christmas Story, The Matrix, and the original Star Wars Trilogy. Some of my absolute favorites I like to go even longer (like every 4-5 years) because I don't want to over-saturate myself with them. A good example would be The Shawshank Redemption.

As for It's a Wonderful Life, I think that may be a once every 2 year movie for me. Although if there is a commentary on the DVD, I may watch it and listen to that this year (last year I didn't have the DVD yet).

Trevor
10-13-08, 11:38 AM
Yep, some movies I just seem to have to watch, or can't turn off if I stumble upon them. But then some movies, even my favorites, I go years without watching. Partly due to the over-saturation fear, and partly due to a silly "save the best for last" philosophy of sorts. Hard to fully explain without sounding even sillier than it already does.

I started this holiday challenge simply because I all ready do watch so many movies every Christmas that I may as well make a contest for it.

Be honest Davy/Micky/Peter/Michael. You started this challenge to save a dying child. If we can just get 20 participants to watch 100 movies each, the child's dying wish will be granted and the angel Griswold will take them to 34th Street where a virgin will heal them.

I haven't checked the thread from last year yet, but I don't remember "End of Days" being listed for one of the rare New Year's movies.

Unfortunately, another one that I inadvertently watched for the October Horror Movie Challenge that I should have reserved for this challenge :(

There is a bit of a letdown after Christmas is over, but I remember last year I was really looking forward to watching Strange Days because I hadn't seen it for 6 years or so. Unfortunately, my excitement turned into disappointment when I put in the DVD and realized it wasn't anamorphic. I may have to see if the R2 German SE is available somewhere.

Before I forget, the season finale of Pushing Daisies Season 1 would falls into the Christmas/New Years timeframe. The name of the episode is Corpsicle.

I must admit, I am making a special point to mention this because I just started watching this show yesterday and it is an absolutely brilliant show. Love it.

I kind of like this idea for a Wild Card (or 2 or 3). Like my sister (whom I don't see very often) and I go see a movie every Thanksgiving Day and every Christmas Day as a family tradition, but it's rarely an actual holiday movie. But it FEELS like holiday because it IS part of our holiday tradition.

Personally, I'm psyched for this. First year for me, and I missed most of the October Horror Challenge. Already planning my list for this one. Gonna kick it off with Home for the Holidays, and it will culminate with Strange Days. (or When Harry Met Sally. Does that qualify for New Year's?)

I have added a new exception this year, which can be found in the rules on the first page:

A new addition to this year's challenge, as suggested by bluelitespecial is a THREE Wild Card Option. This is here to include movies you might watch as a tradition during the holidays. My family used to watch Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory every Thanksgiving. So ANY movie is allowed, up to THREE. Thanks bluelitespecial

This is a great idea. I used to watch the original Star Wars trilogy over Christmas break every year. There should be a stipulation, though, that you have to write about the tradition (at least a sentence or so) in your list thread. Not that it wouldn't count if one didn't, but it would be cool to get a little insight into peoples traditions.

I could see where watching it every Christmas Eve would be annoying as a kid [It's A Wonderful Life]. But now that I'm old enough to appreciate it, I can't imagine not watching it at least once per year.

We always have it on in the background on Christmas Eve at my mom's. Occasionally, everybody will become engrossed in the movie but overall it is just on for ambiance and tradition.

Actually, my cousin's husband had never seen it before. One year, on Christmas Eve, he watched the whole thing and loved it. My cousin was pregnant at the time, and when their baby was born, they named her Susan. But they call her Zuzu for short.

Now "A Christmas Story" is another creature altogether. Aside from when "It's A Wonderful Life" is on TV, we have this on all day long in our house. Oddly enough, we never get sick of it.

Most excellent. We used to watch "Wizard of Oz" every Thanksgiving. Maybe we'll start that tradition up again.

We also used to go to a movie on Christmas Day after dinner. We haven't in several years (since before my kids were born), but who knows when we might start this one up again.

I'm in on this one...although it looks like I really need to read the rules a few times.

EDIT - I think I understand how this works...but if anyone wants to give me the condensed version, please do.

Watch anything having to do with Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year's between November 24, 2008 and January 1, 2009. it doesn't even have to be about those holidays. It could just take place during the holiday season

You can also watch 3 movies that have absolutely nothing to do with any of the holidays and it doesn't have to take place during that time either. Just three random movies. This is here to include movies you might watch as a tradition during the holidays.

Any questions. :D

On another note, I picked up 2 Christmas related movies today from Big Lots: A Christmas Carol (animated, 2001) for $3 and Felix the Cat Saves Christmas for $2, both of which I've never seen.

I think the best way is just hit the "report post" icon (the red triangle with an exclamation point in it.) Or you can post a message in the feedback forum. Or you could PM one of the mods for this particular forum.

If I may make a suggestion, regardless, is don't make the list thread until the middle of next week or something, that will cut down on the confusion.

Davey! You've been here 4+ years and have never used the "report post" button, fixed a thread title, reported a spammer, etc etc? Shame shame. :)

I'll do it right now for you.

Also, coincidentally, I just bought the same two titles at Big Lots as well (and the Woody Allen box set for $16).

It's the Artisan Entertainment release. It says it's digitally remastered and it has a "making of" documentary and a tribute to Frank Capra.

I've never seen the movie before (gasp!) but DVDEmpire had a used copy for 51¢ and I needed to find a third DVD to get free shipping, so I figured why not... :) I actually bought it back in April, but haven't watched it yet; I figure since I've never seen it, the first time I watch it should be at Christmas time.

The list thread should be up by Wednesday, if not Thursday at the latest.

I, personally, can't wait for this to start. Last year I had such a crappy holiday, because my semester in school was going terribly and my father hurt his back so I was taking care of him and it was so much stress, even when school ended I was still stressed beyond belief. But this year, my semester in school is going great, and I love the holidays. Can't wait! I just always have a problem with wanting to watch my Christmas movies right away, but I must wait until after Thanksgiving!

We can watch thanksgiving movies after Thanksgiving still, right? I'm thinking of buying the Garfield holiday special collection with the Thanksgiving episode, but I won't have the money until after Thanksgiving.

I also want to buy the Night Before Christmas with the little mice. There are some on eBay and I'm thinking of doing it just because I love that special so much. I still need "White Christmas" and "A Miracle on 34th Street" in my collection too.

Yes, you can watch any Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Years (I guess I should just say Holiday) movie/show any time during the duration of the challenge.

Which remake? I think we've had about 5 versions of it. If I recall, I've seen 3 or 4 of them and they aren't horrible, but nowhere near as good as the original, imo.

Really? I thought there was only one. Shows how much I know about movies. :nopanic: The one I'm taking about came out in the 90s I think. It looked cute but there's no touching the original for me. My mom had the VHS copy from many years ago, but I never watched it though. A couple of years ago, my mom was watching it and forgot to eject the tape from her VCR, which was set to record something later that night. For some reason, they record tab was still on and the "It's A Wonderful Life" got erased.

I've been tempted to pick up this version, but at this point I'm wondering if I should just wait for Blu-ray.

There were three back in the 40s and 50s, and I think some more modern ones with different names.

There was a TV Movie version of MIRACLE ON 34TH STREET in the 70's with Sebastian Cabot as Kris, and Jane Alexander and David Hartman in the Maureen O'Hara and John Paine roles. Not bad, but not particularly memorable either. There was also a Broadway musical version called "Here's Love" in the early 60's, but there's no recorded performance version available.

According to this Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000HT3PPG/ref=nosim/dvdpricesearch) review, you're correct.

For not only does the release feature the original black & white version shown in theaters and the circa 1980s colorized version of the same feature film, but also hidden away on the second disc is the curiously titled "20th Century Fox Hour of the Stars: The Miracle on 34th Street," which turns out to be a 46 minute 1950s remake for television that is surprisingly in incredibly good quality.

For anyone who can answer this, I decided to order the Black Christmas remake that came out a few years ago, but have been thinking about getting the original as well. Are the Gossip Girl episodes Thanksgiving or Christmas?

I'm currently in the middle of adding my list and Trevor's list from last year. I figured between the 700 titles we watched, it would cover a lot of titles. I've already noticed quite a few doubles I didn't delete. That will be resolved shortly.

(Damn you Trevor for putting your comments on the same line as the title, it took some ingenious search/replace methods to delete that stuff) :D

well, i recently saw:
"Silent Night, Deadly Night"
"The Nightmare Before Christmas"

i also just saw two season 2 episodes of the "West Wing" that would qualify:
"Shibboleth" (Thanksgiving)
"Noel" (X-mas)

so i guess i jumped the gun, but i will hold off on my annual ritual of watching "Love Actually". i can't wait to see that one again!!

For anyone who can answer this, I decided to order the Black Christmas remake that came out a few years ago, but have been thinking about getting the original as well. Would it be worth my time, how do the two versions compare to one another. It will be good to have a christmas horror flick to watch along with everything else.

The original is vastly superior to the remake. Order it...you won't be disappointed.

Based on comments from the Horror Movie Challenge, I've been trying to get Black Christmas from my library. I went in to pick up what I thought was the original, and they handed me the remake. The funny thing is, my library has the remake and I had to try and get the original via inter-library loan. They actually went ahead and requested the remake from another library! I don't know if it was my library's error or the lending library's. I DO know that I requested the original though. Anyway, I put in the notes section of my new request that I want the original directed by Bob Clark, not the 2007 remake. Hopefully they won't make the same mistake.

Great job on all the lists Numes!

Sorry about not being forward thinking and formatting my list to make cut and paste easier. :) I admire your ingenuity though, I would have given up and just manually done it.

Couple minor things. You probably meant to add "movies" to the top of your Christmas list. I don't think the King Kong/Mighty Joe Young movies weren't officially sanctioned as counting for Thanksgiving. They could count as wildcards at the minimum, as it is a Thanksgiving tradition in many areas to show them each year.

I went through the discussion thread from 2007 and this year (so far) and I have compiled a listing of everything that anyone mentioned in those threads. If I get really ambitious, I will go though last years list thread too.

I plan on keeping this list up-to-date, so I will continue to add/delete titles as mentioned.

Finally, all of this was just cut/pasted and sorted, so if there is an error, please let me know. Impressive lists! One error: the Mad About You episode "Met Someone" should be under Christmas, not Thanksgiving.

A couple of additions to your very impressive list, Numes:

Christmas:
Scrubs Episode 1.11 "My Own Personal Jesus"

New Years:
3rd Rock From the Sun Episode 4.9 "Happy New Dick!"

Also, the Sports Night episode "The Six Southern Gentleman of Tennessee" is listed twice.

I have in my notes that the Space: Above and Beyond episode "The River Of Stars" (1.11) might be a Christmas episode, but I haven't actually seen it yet so I can't confirm.

When we saw it in theaters on Christmas day, I loved the Black Christmas remake. Now, on DVD, I think either it was the excitement of the day or I was just on crack, because the movie sucks, but it's fun enough for me to watch it again. The original...well, the thing is, I love it and there's a lot of good in it, but there are a lot of stupid crappy things about it too that no one mentions because its so beloved. To me, it's just like any other slasher, it has its flaws, but it's one of the best slashers, period, and it's well worth a look, especially if you're going to be seeing the remake too.

I've put links to all the lists in my sig for (relatively) easy access. The Monkees - Maybe you could put links to my posts on the first post of the thread.

I will update the lists tonight with everyones comments. I was able to incorporate all of the Numes/Trevor shows for Thanksgiving, but the Christmas one is going to take a little longer... Especially since Trevor had some off-the-wall things and I wasn't sure whether to put them in movies, shows, or specials. I may leave some of those off until I can look them up on IMDB. I know there are probably quite a few dupes in the Christmas list, so hopefully that will get resolved tonight too. Ideally it would also be nice to make items bold that are also available on DVD, but maybe we'll leave that for next year.

Finally, just curious if there was going to be any change to the checklist this year? I know there was quite an expansion for the Halloween challenge. I'm not necessarily suggesting anything, but I thought it would be nice to have it finalized before the list thread goes up.

If they still work you might as well include them, it will make it easier for everyone to watch them. If it's an easy thing to do that is, not sure what you're doing exactly as I'm fairly clueless when it comes to excel.

Saw something very disturbing at Wal-mart yesterday.

You know those holiday collections that contain Rudolph, Frosty, and all the like? There are several different versions of it. Here's one. (http://www.amazon.com/Original-Christmas-Classics-Red-Nosed-Reindeer/dp/B000R7G6JA/)

They seem to re-release it every year with slight changes. Also, there have been store exclusive versions of it in the past, with slight changes or additions.

There seems to be yet another version of this, this time with actual new features. It is called Classic Christmas Favorites (http://www.amazon.com/Classic-Christmas-Favorites-Without-Rudolphs/dp/B001H9N1AO/), contains the usual suspects of Rudolph, The Grinch, Frosty, "and new for 2008 are three specials previously unavailable on DVD: The Leprechauns' Christmas Gold (1981), Pinocchio's Christmas (1980), and The Stingiest Man in Town (1978)"

I hate to triple/quintuple dip on some of the standards, but those three specials have never been on DVD and are hard to find on TV. Anyone else tempted?

A Soapy Christmas * - 5/10 - I'll be honest. I did not watch this to broaden my mind and expose myself to new things. I thought it was a one hour long episode of the old sitcom Soap. But instead, it is a special on a bunch of soap opera stars making a Christmas CD.

Thanks Numes :) Another reminder for me to keep away from the insanity of last year. I was a crazy person last year. You all should have stopped me. I thought you were my friends.

Spoilering personal ramble/rant, you can safely ignore it.
Although I only spent about 7-8 hours per day watching my 500+ shows, the whole month was just Holiday Chaos. I probably spent another hour per day on my list, and another hour or two accumulating the content (shopping for DVDs, searching my collection for holiday themes, scouring the TV listings, running my DVR and DVD-recorder almost constantly, etc).

Between last year and the challenges this year, I have literally burned out two DVD Recorders. They are probably not meant to be run 24/7, constantly burning content from my DVR so that it wouldn't fill up.

So this year, while I am still very excited about the challenge and plan to fully participate, it will be much more calm. I'm not going to even glance at the TV listings this year. I have enough. I burned everything to DVD last year, so I have 600 or more Christmas titles on DVD. I think that's enough. No checklist for me this year, it just feeds my OCD. No more shopping for holiday titles. I have a few things in my DD cart right now, but that will be it for the year.

I'm obviously not saying that watching a lot is a bad thing. I'll probably be back to 5+ hours a day on the next challenge. But right now, I need a break.
Sorry for the personal ramble, but remembering that I actually watched an hour of soap opera stars sing and talk about making a Christmas CD makes me want to go back in time and slap myself silly.

So I guess it's an acceptable title to include.

I started going going through the DVR tonight setting up recordings for Thanksgiving shows and I wanted to bring up the discussion about starting this challenge a little earlier next year. There are a lot of Thanksgiving episodes out there and it's a little unfair that Thanksgiving only gets 4 days (3 days for many because of family, cooking, etc... on Thursday.) I'm only through 4 channels and I probably have 30 shows set up to record. I know there's no way I'll get to all those, but if I were able to start say...tomorrow morning, the weekend would sure give me a lot of time to watch some of these shows, plus it will get me in the Thanksgiving mood a bit more. I might have to forgo watching A Boyfriend for Thanksgiving because The Iron Chef America Thanksgiving Showdown had priority. :)

Just a thought.

Numes, TM is slightly reluctant to extend things, although we have gotten him to extend it a bit in the past.

I agree with you though, there are a lot of Thanksgiving shows and movies out there, and we really only have 3 days to watch them. I know we could watch them after Thursday, but, like most people I think, once Friday hits it's all Christmas. Same with Christmas. Come the 26th, I'm done with Christmas and move on to New Year's planning and doings.

Maybe start the Friday before Thanksgiving next year, giving us a good 5/6 days to get our Turkey viewing fix?

WallyOPD
11-21-08, 08:12 PM
I like the idea of starting on Friday because it gives you an even week (counting Thanksgiving day) to watch your content.

Numes
11-21-08, 10:35 PM
Like I said, just a thought and a discussion point. Personally, I wouldn't want to extend it any more past the Friday/Saturday before Thanksgiving. In looking at the TV schedule, Saturday is really when things start "cooking" (oh, horrible, I know) for Thanksgiving programming. I think I'm just a little more jazzed because I went to the store after work for some cooking supplies for Thanksgiving and looking forward to seeing the fam, etc...

Edit: I also am excited because last year's Holiday Challenge was the first time I participated in any of the DVDTalk challenges (I've been a continuous member since 2002, what was I doing??) and I really went for it last year with 200 viewings and it was a lot of fun. I watched so many random shows that I would have never watched were it not for this challenge. It also gave me an excuse to watch a lot of TV shows that I used to watch when I was growing up. Brought back a lot of memories. I hesitate using the term OCD, but I am very particular in how I watch TV shows now and it is extremely rare for me to simply watch a random episode of a TV show without watching the show in order... even for shows that don't have a continuous storyline. I already have episodes of Gilmore Girls and 7th Heaven on the DVR next week. Never seen an episode of either show and have no idea what they are about, but certainly anticipating watching them :)

It's a possibility to start the challenge earlier next year, I'll think about it. I hate extending it every year though. I'll think about it, it does make sense.

RobCA

Personally, I don't mind watching Thanksgiving stuff after Thanksgiving, and I'm not planning to start watching anything Christmas-related until December 1st, so I don't run out of things to watch way too early, like I did last year.

But I don't see any reason not to start the challenge the Friday before Thanksgiving next year. It made sense to keep it shorter the first year, when it was just movies, but now that TV show episodes are included, and with so many of them that we can watch, the extra time is not only a good idea, it's practically essential. :)

Also, since I do have it listed as starting at midnight CST, I guess that does indeed mean you people on the west coast get to start it early! It's only fair.

I'll be watching Home for the Holidays tomorrow, with my other Thanksgiving movies, but tonight, I started off with Tadpole. I wanted something nice and short, so I wouldn't be up too late, and at about 70 minutes, not counting the end credits, it fit the bill nicely. Great little movie too, I highly recommend it.

Ooh, you can watch "A Charlie Brown Christmas" online!

Also, that Youtube version of "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" doesn't have my favorite song ("Give Your Heart a Try"). My friend says that the special has been edited so much for commercials that they don't play that song anymore (blasphemy!) Supposedly this version is more complete:

Yes please. Spoiler tags on the checklists would help out a lot.

I think the mods will end up stickying the list thread, but if not, we can keep it on page one pretty easily. Personally, I think people ignore all the sticky threads but notice threads that bounce around.

 Me too. I will not be putting my checklist in a spoiler tag. I will be putting it in small font, though.

After a whirlwind weekend of working just so I could prepare for taking vacation tomorrow and Wednesday (that sounds counter-intuitive, doesn't it?,) I should be able to finalize the lists tonight or tomorrow. My plan was to complete it before the challenge started, but at least the Thanksgiving items were done.

Just watched Pieces of April for the first time. Wow. I love it when I go into a film completely blind, not expecting anything, and am blown away. A truly excellent film.

I didn't even realize it was Katie Holmes until the end credits. She did a fine job, but the entire cast did great work on a fantastic script. This film deserved Oscar noms, and I recommend it to everyone.

I, for some reason, can't stand holiday type films. I mean, I can rock Die Hard a bajillion times, but films like "Miracle on 34th Street", yeah, not my bag. Hey, more power to everyone else in this thread that can.

I'm merely part of this challenge because the October challenge was so much fun, and I figured if it was at least HALF as fun as that was, I'd give it a shot.

I figure I'll just watch a bunch of TV shows holiday-themed episodes. I already printed out the TV schedule. I'm good to go.

First thing I watched was the Colbert christmas special, mainly because it was on at 12:00 on the first day of the challenge. Severely disappointed. I find Colbert usually hilarious, but this was just bad.

Anyone else tempted?

http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/7404/51qtxc7nglsl500aa240wj2.th.jpg (http://img515.imageshack.us/my.php?image=51qtxc7nglsl500aa240wj2.jpg)http://img515.imageshack.us/images/thpix.gif (http://g.imageshack.us/thpix.php)

So putting it up there is of limited to no benefit for us who are already in the challenge, and greatly diminishes the chances of newcomers finding the challenge.

I posted in the old thread that I don't think The Thing should count. I don't think that just taking place in December is a valid criterion, I think if it takes place during the holiday season, it should at least reference some sort of holiday. I mean they don't even mention anything about the holidays at all in the movie. Personally, I wouldn't count it.

Here's what I wrote last year (the last post in last years discussion thread):

...
Anyhoo, I can confirm that this movie has absolutely nothing to do with any holiday, let alone a November/December/New Years holiday. I guess this can be for future reference for next year's challenge.

I try to keep it holiday themed though, it's more fun!

Yeah, I haven't watched a whole lot either... mostly kids shows and TV episodes. And those are usually more of a "I'm going to bed soon so I don't want to turn on a movie" situation.

My kids were sick all weekend too so I just let them watch whatever they wanted. Of course, I tried to steer them toward Christmas programmming, but was unsuccessful.

I watched on demand last night a 2002 Canadian film called 'Northern Station' and I swear to god, I wanted to slam a nail in my forehead - it was soooo painful to watch. Let alone the obvious (bad) dubbing, the movie was so wrong on so many levels, it was never boring, cause I was quite rivetted in seeing how this would end, but the film was scattershot and I never quite knew who the director/studio was catering to. The overall tone of death, loss and extremely weird set pieces - Santa sings a rock song, the filmmakers must have been on drugs - this film was so ripe to have a MST3K treatment.

Thanks Trevor, that's awesome.

From the "Could it Get Any WORSE" files: A fire gutted my apartment building today. The upstairs apartments are ok, just smoke damage, so luckily I still have most of my stuff, but I lost some DVDs and books and some posters and some boxed food. I'm infinitely lucky though, a few of those downstairs apartments are totally decimated. I feel for those poor people, especially in cold Michigan weather.

I have a feeling I'm going to totally LOSE IT when I watch "It's a Wonderful Life" this year. I've actually been putting it off for that very reason, but it doesn't look like things are going to be looking up any time soon. Maybe I should just watch it and get it over with. :-p

Sorry to hear about your current situation, edwardnortonfan. Do you know what caused the fire?

It always seems that things like this always happen around the holidays. We had a bunch of layoffs around this time last year and there are rumors of more coming soon. I wish life had a happy ending like "It's A Wonderful Life".

edwardnortonfan
12-15-08, 11:22 PM
It's really sad. The lady in the apartment below mine was just getting back on her feet (she came from a battered women's shelter) and she happened to have a candle burning in her apartment that she thought she blew out, but wen she came back from visiting a friend the smoke was already billowing out of her apartment (the candle fell over). We were all evacuating and people were holding blankets over their kids' heads. We're lucky everyone got out but people were outside sobbing because most of us don't have the $25 a month it takes to have renter's insurance, and even the lady who had insurance was crying because she can't afford the deductible. Scary times.

I wish life were more like "It's a Wonderful Life" sometimes too. But the lady below me already has people donating furniture for her and clothes, and my church is giving her food and dishes to replace the ones she lost, and the Red Cross is giving her clothing vouchers to replace her clothes and her son's clothes. There are some good things, too.

The Monkees
12-16-08, 02:06 PM
That's exactly why when I light anything in my house (candles or otherwise) I not only blow them out but I will run the wick under water as well. If I light matches in the house I usually run them under water as well before throwing them away, to make sure no fire starts in the garbage or anything like that.

Sad story, I'm sorry.

I'm at 84 now two more shows and I'll beat my last years total, but I think I'm already burned out on Christmas viewing. I will probably watch the rest of the new stuff I bought this year, then finish with my wild card movies.

Of course you know that there is about 50 hours of Christmas programming on cable per day, right? Yup! But instead of watching TV, I'd rather watch my DVDs; that's why I buy 'em. :)

I know what you mean, set myself a goal of one unwatched movie a day (on average) back in April and am keeping up so far.

But I also look at my cable bill and feel like I have to watch some TV to get my money's worth there.

I do that too. I'm like, "Ok, I pay $95 for this and my internet combined, we'te GOING to get our money's worth" and then I have the TV on about 16 hours a day when I'm not working, and I feel justified. :-p

Yeah Im almost pretty much out of steam with the xmas programming... I think the problem is I have watched way too much crappy stuff and its beginning to take it toll. Ill try to make it to xmas day where I will do Xmas Vacation and Xmas Story and call it done.

Just had my birthday today and despite receiving numerous TV season DVDs, it doesn't look like a single one has any Christmas episodes on it. :( I've still got about 10-15 things I need to watch from my collection, plus a couple of shows on the DVR, and I'm hoping to get Joyeux Noël off of my Netflix queue to watch on Christmas Eve.

I've fallen out of spirit lately. I think once Monday gets here I'll be in full Christmas mode and really cram some good stuff in those days before Christmas!

My problem has been that I'm waiting until the last few days before (and including) Christmas to watch the top ones: Christmas Story, Christmas Vacation, White Christmas, etc... so up till now it's been mostly tv shows and kid stuff with my daughter.

Well, I watched the 1938 version of "A Christmas Carol" and I'm a blubbery mess. It figures. I don't even want to think about what the other movies are going to do to me.

I got the next 5 days off including today. I usually stop after Christmas Eve, Christmas day is full of family stuff so I don't watch anything on Christmas day. I'm gonna try to watch to watch as many as I can today and tomorrow!

Yeah, my plan from less than 12 hours ago already fell apart. I got to playing Rock Band and that consumed most of my day. Hopefully tomorrow will be better since it's Christmas Eve!!

Anyone else notice how much Christmas gets in the way of watching Christmas movies?

The last week or two I've added almost nothing to my list, because I've been too busy with shopping, wrapping, planning, decorating, holiday activities with the family....

Come on, people! I have movies to watch! Leave me alone!! :D

It doesn't really get into my way, it's just I'm not in the spirit for some reason. I should be but I keep thinking about how everything goes back to normal AFTER Christmas, and I need to stop thinking about that because it should be what happens now! Not later! Life is too damn short to worry about stupid shit like that.

I'm not coming anywhere close to my goal from last year, but I am staying up really late tonight and will try to get in some more titles.

LOL!

I'm surprised that I've watched as much as I have lately (and that still ain't much) with how busy we've been.

Christmas Eve on Sesame Street was the one show that really put me in the Christmas mood this year. PBS use to always air it on Christmas Eve until they stopped sometime in the early 90s. I have the dvd, but its really sad its not on tv anymore, not only that this year was the show's 30th aniversary. It really is one my all time favorite Christmas shows, classic Sesame Street at its best, and still holds up incredibly well for me watching it at age 27.
