It's the second greatest line ever uttered in a VP debate. Sort of represents the fact that these debates are typically far more entertaining than the main event.
I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some, people out there in our nation don't have maps and, uh, I believe that our, uh, education like such as, uh, South Africa and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and, I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, or, uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future, for our children.

Perot eventually re-entered the race in the fall of 1992, with Stockdale still in place as the vice-presidential nominee. Stockdale was not informed that he would be participating in the October 13 vice-presidential debate held in Atlanta, Georgia, until a week before the event. He had no formal preparation for the debate, unlike his opponents Al Gore and Dan Quayle. Stockdale infamously opened the debate by saying, "Who am I? Why am I here?" Initially, the rhetorical questions drew applause from the audience, [4] seeming to be a good-natured acknowledgment of his relatively unknown status and lack of traditional qualifications. However, his unfocused style for the rest of the debate (including asking the moderator to repeat one question because he didn't have his hearing aid turned on) made him appear confused and almost disoriented. An unflattering recreation of the moment on Saturday Night Live later that week, with Phil Hartman as Stockdale, cemented a public perception of Stockdale as slow-witted. He was also often parodied for his constant use of the word "gridlock" to describe slow governmental policy.
Kind of a shame that that's probably what he's mostly going to be remembered for since he seems to have been a pretty remarkable man.

All eyes on Palin in VP debate
By John Whitesides, Political Correspondent 12 minutes ago
ST. LOUIS (Reuters) - Republican Sarah Palin and Democrat Joe Biden share the same stage in a vice presidential debate on Thursday, but the spotlight will be on the untested Palin as she tries to ease doubts about whether she is up to the job.
\The lone match-up of the vice presidential contenders before the November 4 election promises more than the usual drama, most of it supplied by Palin's debut in an unscripted format.
The encounter could draw a larger television audience than the 52 million who watched last week's first debate between the presidential candidates -- Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama.
McCain's surprise choice in August of the relatively unknown Palin as his No. 2 rallied conservative support for the Republican ticket and turned the moose-hunting Alaska governor into a political celebrity.
But her lack of national experience and her hesitant performance in rare media interviews have raised doubts about her readiness and prompted criticism even from some prominent conservatives.
Palin hopes a solid debate performance can halt Obama's momentum and erase doubts about her ability to step into the top job if needed. McCain, 72, would be the oldest president to begin a first term.
In a Washington Post/ABC News poll released on Thursday, 60 percent of the voters surveyed said Palin did not have the experience to be president, up from 45 percent in a similar survey a month ago.
"I look forward to tomorrow night, getting to speak to Americans about the very, very, clear choice that they will have on November 4th," Palin told conservative talk show host Sean Hannity on his radio program.
McCain lashed out in a testy interview with the Des Moines Register editorial board in Iowa on Tuesday when asked about conservative qualms about Palin.
"I haven't detected that, haven't detected that in the polls, haven't detected that among the base," he said, wishing "good luck" to any "Georgetown cocktail party person who calls himself a conservative and doesn't like Palin."
Biden, 65, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, faces his own set of challenges as he tries to rein in his tendency to make mistakes and talk too much. He will have to tread carefully in challenging Palin without appearing condescending or aggressive.
OBAMA GAINS GROUND
The encounter follows last week's first presidential debate between Obama and McCain. Opinion polls judged Obama the winner, and the Illinois senator has since solidified his lead in national polls and gained ground on McCain in some crucial battleground states.
A flurry of new surveys showed Obama with significant leads in traditional battlegrounds like Florida, Pennsylvania and Ohio, and building a solid edge in states like Virginia and Nevada where Democratic presidential contenders rarely do well.
Obama has picked up steam during the crisis on Wall Street over the last two weeks, with polls showing voters preferring his economic leadership. Obama and McCain, an Arizona senator, voted for the $700 billion financial bailout in the Senate on Wednesday.
The television audience for the vice presidential debate on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis could surpass the 52 million who watched the debate between McCain and Obama last week and it could become the most watched vice presidential debate ever.
The previous record was the nearly 57 million who watched the 1984 debate between then-Vice President George H.W. Bush, the current president's father, and Geraldine Ferraro, the first woman vice presidential nominee for a major party.
Palin and Biden have spent several days off the campaign trail to prepare. Palin has been at McCain's Arizona retreat and Biden at home in Delaware.
Both camps have tried to drive up expectations for their opponent.
"I've been hearing about his Senate speeches since I was in, like, second grade," Palin, 44, told CBS News in a sly reference to their differences in age. "I'm the new energy, the new face, the new ideas -- and he's got the experience."
Obama aides said they have studied her debates during her 2006 campaign for governor of Alaska.
"Anyone who has watched any of her earlier debates would agree she is a skilled debater," Obama campaign manager David Plouffe said.

Best thing about the Stockdale quote was when Phil Hartman yelled it in a Ross Perot sketch.

I think the expectations have been lowered so much that just showing up will be enough for the pundants to proclaim a victory for Palin. My prediction is that it'll be pathetic at best.
I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some, people out there in our nation don't have maps and, uh, I believe that our, uh, education like such as, uh, South Africa and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and, I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, or, uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future, for our children.
why not just use her actual quotes:
"As for that VP talk all the time, I'll tell you, I still can't answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day?" --Sarah Palin, interview with CNBC's "Kudlow & Co", July 2008
"As Putin rears his head and comes into the air space of the United States of America, where– where do they go? It’s Alaska. It's just right over the border." --Sarah Palin, explaining why Alaska's proximity to Russia gives her foreign policy experience, interview with CBS's Katie Couric, Sept. 24, 2008
"I'm the mayor, I can do whatever I want until the courts tell me I can't.'" --Sarah Palin, as quoted by former City Council Member Nick Carney, after he raised objections about the $50,000 she spent renovating the mayor's office without approval of the city council

*Conservative Republicans expect Sarah to rip out Joe's beating heart and consume it on stage.
*Moderate Republicans are a trifle nervous.

Do the candidates get the questions in advance for this one? If so, Palin will do fine. If not, she still won't be a complete disaster since I'm sure she'll be given canned responses on the most likely questions. The only problem will be is if she's thrown a curve ball (a question the campaign didn't see coming).

Someone was saying that Biden's best strategy would be to virtually ignore Palin. His main goal should be not to make any news whatsoever. The polls are going strongly Obama's way, and he just needs to stay off the radar.
As for Palin's strategy ... I guess it's try not to say anything too dumb. I'm guessing it'll be a heavy course of "we cannot blink," "I'm ready," and "shore up the economy."

Here's my cut-n-paste for future use for our Obama supporters:
Just pick one of these depending on the situation..
If Palin does poorly:
"By Palin completely screwing up the answers and saying all sorts of stupid stuff just goes to prove that she is the wrong person for VP and it further goes to illustrate that McCain is a complete idiot for picking her - thus, once again, showing that he is NOT the person you want as President at this important time."
If Biden does poorly:
"By Biden mis-speaking and accidentally fumbling over some words just goes to prove that he makes mistakes sometimes like everyone else but does nothing to damage the fact that Obama is a genius for picking him - thus, once again, showing that he is DEFINITELY the person you want as Preisdent in this important time."
I hope this helps make your night a little easier. :)

The Official* Vice Presidential Debate Drinking Game!
September 30, 2008 by slander08 <http://slander08.wordpress.com/author/slander08/>
Prepare yourself for this Thursday’s vice presidential debate by printing out the rules below for this year’s Vice Presidential Debate Drinking Game!
Without further delay, we bring you the rules.
For Sarah Palin:
Every time Palin mentions one of her kids by name, take the number of drinks corresponding to that child’s number in her brood (e.g. 1 drink for Track, 2 drinks for Bristol, 3 drinks for Willow, 4 drinks for Piper and 5 drinks for Trig). If she does not give a name, take 1 drink.
When Palin mentions 9/11 in a textually-relevant manner (e.g. “We need to prevent another attack like the one on 9/11″), take 1 drink. When Palin mentions 9/11 in a gratuitous, textually-irrelevant manner (e.g. “When my son Track was sent over to Iraq on 9/11…”), take 2 drinks.
If Palin uses the phrase, “hockey mom”, drink until she takes the self-satisfied smirk off her face.
For Joe Biden:
Every time Biden chuckles condescendingly at Sarah Palin, take 1 drink. Every time Biden chuckles condescendingly at moderator Gwen Ifill, take 2 drinks.
Every time Biden refers to himself in the third person, take 1 drink. If he uses his full name (e.g. “When people ask me, ‘Joe Biden, how did you become so good looking?’”), take 2 drinks.
If Biden points out that despite being less than 1/100th the size, Delaware has more people than Alaska , drink until you see the bottom of your glass.
If either candidate says:
Russia, take 1 drink. U.S.S.R., take 2 drinks. Swimming the Bering Straight, take 3 drinks.
Hillary Clinton, take 1 drink. Bill Clinton, take 2 drinks. Monica Lewinsky, take 3 drinks.
Dick Cheney, take 1 drink. Tricky Dick, take 2 drinks. Sucking dick, take 3 drinks.
Finally, if at any point Biden uses the phrase “I know Geraldine Ferraro; Geraldine Ferraro is a friend of mine. Governor, you’re no Geraldine Ferraro,” chug your beer, turn off your TV, and shoot yourself in the head.
Note: Slander ‘08 only condones drinking irresponsibly during election years when you need it most.

ST. LOUIS — Sarah Palin plans to go on the attack in tonight’s debate, hitting Joe Biden for what she will call his foreign policy blunders and penchant for adopting liberal positions on taxes and other issues, according to campaign officials involved in prepping her for tonight’s showdown.
The Palin camp is projecting surprising self-confidence in the pre-debate hours, despite the vice presidential nominee’s uneven — and, at some points, peculiar — performances in recent television interviews, the officials say. Top advisers to John McCain privately say Palin’s recent CBS interview was a borderline disaster, especially since it played out in several segments over several days. Tonight will be different, they say.
“This is going to finally put her back into a position where we see her like we saw her the first couple weeks,” a McCain official said. “She was herself. She was authentic, and people related to that. ... Tonight, she’ll get into a rhythm. You’re going to see her in a way that you haven’t seen her yet.”
By contrast, Biden plans what an aide calls "a just-the-facts, prosecutorial approach laying out the case against McCain and defending Obama." The aide said Biden will be "keeping the eye on the target, which is McCain."
It is hard to imagine higher stakes for a vice presidential nominee on the national stage. Palin wowed even her biggest skeptics with her spirited introduction to the American people at the Republican National Convention last month. It’s been downhill since then, however. She has been largely sheltered from unscripted moments on the campaign trail. And, when she has exposed herself to improvisation or tough questioning, Palin has been criticized for offering vague and at times unusual responses.
Palin advisers say that she remains just as popular with much of the Republican base as she was a month ago when her convention speech was hailed as a home run. But her ratings have eroded in polls since then, and the advisers see the 90-minute debate at 9 p.m. Eastern as a chance for a swift turnaround from what they call “negativity” in her news coverage.
From her debate playbook, as described by McCain officials:
— Throw Biden’s own words back at him.
“There’s going to be a lot of opportunities to use Joe Biden’s words against him — and not his gaffes,” an official said. “When he says raising taxes is patriotic, that’s a policy position. That’s what he believes. She’s going to use those against him.”
(On ABC’s “Good Morning America” last month, in explaining the need for the wealthiest Americans to pay more taxes, Biden said: “It's time to be patriotic ... time to jump in, time to be part of the deal, time to help get America out of the rut.”)
— Highlight past Biden foreign-policy positions as a way to undermine his core strength.
“He’s a celebrated foreign policy expert, but he has been wrong … dating back to the Reagan administration,” the official said. “There are opportunities there for her to jump in.”
One example that was provided was Biden’s reference to North Korea as “a paper tiger” on CBS’s “The Early Show” in 2006. (“I would rather have seen it do exactly what it did, demonstrate to the whole world that it is in fact a paper tiger.”)
Another example noted by the campaign was voting for defense cuts during the Reagan administration, and voting against the first Gulf war in 1991. (PolitiFact.com points out that he voted with the majority of Senate Democrats on the resolution.)
— Highlight places where Biden and Barack Obama have differed, including primary-season statements about Obama’s readiness to lead and his positions on Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan.
“He voted for the Iraq war, and Obama said that was poor judgment,” the official. “There are a lot of wedge positions between Obama and Biden.”
McCain officials say they are optimistic despite her falling credibility and likability in polls.
“Nobody who’s in the middle of a campaign takes a minute to panic,” an aide said. “Every single day, there’s an ebb and flow — that’s what makes these things exciting. She’s been there before. She’s done this before. She’s been successful. And we as a campaign expect she will rise to the occasion and be strong.”

What Gen. David McKiernan said:
First of all, please don’t think that I’m saying there’s no room for tribal engagement in Afghanistan, because I think it’s very necessary. But I think it’s much more complex environment of tribal linkages, and intertribal complexity than there is in Iraq. It’s not as simple as taking the Sunni Awakening and doing the Pashtun Awakening in Afghanistan. It’s much more complex than that.
But there are countless other differences between Iraq and Afghanistan. In Afghanistan, it’s such a poor country, by any set of metrics you can imagine. A country that has very harsh geography. It’s very difficult to move around, getting back to our reliance on helicopters. It’s a country with very few natural resources, as opposed to the oil revenues that [Iraq] has. There’s very little money to be generated in terms of generated in Afghanistan. The literacy rate — you have a literate society in Iraq, you have a society that has a history of producing civil administrators, technocrats, middle class that are able to run the country in Iraq. You do not have that in Afghanistan. So there’s educational challenges, challenges of human capitol that I mentioned earlier.
So there are a lot of challenges. What I don’t think is needed — the word that I don’t use in Afghanistan is the word “surge.” There needs to be a sustained commitment of a variety of military and non-military resources, I believe. That’s my advice to winning in Afghanistan. It won’t be a short-term solution.
Uh oh more heavy sighs..And he's got the hands going...hulk out already.

With Joe Biden I feel like he's actually talking to someone.
With Sarah Palin, I feel like an electronic arm is reaching inside her and pressing "play" on her pre-recorded message.
Right. When Biden speaks, I feel like he understands what he's saying. When Palin speaks, I feel like she's repeating from memory. She's not doing a bad job, but she doesn't seem to own her words.

Ill put up 20 bucks that Sarah Palin thinks Darfur is a town south of Barrow.
Darfu is the name of Bristol's kid.

Biden is frazzled over Palin answers. He knows he can't go full Biden on her and it is getting to him.

True about Palin (at times), but Biden is starting to let his underlying anger take control of his answers. It's affecting how he comes across.
