my vote goes to best in show. i finally saw spinal tap and didnt find it very funny at all. i watched a mighty wind this weekend. its great too but i didnt laugh nearly as much as i do when watching best in show. the music in AMW was pretty damn good too. i have yet to see waiting for guffman but i have it and i plan on watching it this weekend.

You forgot For Your Consideration, though if the reviews are to be believed, it is best if this film is forgotten. He also didn't direct Spinal Tap, Rob Reiner did. Sheesh. Waiting for Guffman is my favorite, by a hair over Best In Show. A Mighty Wind had some amusing moments, but the tone wavered a bit uncertainly between comedy and melodrama.

This is Spinal Tap because it was directed by Rob Reiner
Christopher Guest's brand of humor must be an acquired taste.

oops i forgot to mention that i know he didnt direct spinal tap. he wrote it though so i included it.
also i havent seen FYC but IMDB didnt make it seem like a mockumentary. so i didnt include it. is it?
also i never said he directed any of the movies i listed. so technically if he wrote a movie it his movie too isnt it?

For Your Consideration wasn't a mockumentary.

Im the opposite... Best in Show by a slim margin over Waiting for Guffman. But really, you can't go wrong with either.

You know what the genius of Christopher Guest is? You can't watch a "rockumentary" without having at least one Spinal Tap moment. You can't watch the Westminster Dog Show without thinking of Best In Show and you can't really watch regional theater without having some fleeting Guffman thought. He effectively ruined those experiences and God bless him for that.

Well, it's got to be Spinal Tap, even if he didn't direct it. That is just an epic Mockumentary. Not a flaw in the movie - the satire is just biting. How many bands took it personally and thought it was supposed to be about them? And later on how many bands admitted that they took it personally because it hit just a little too close to home?
Just a great, great movie.

I have to give the edge to Waiting for Guffman, but it's a narrow edge.

agreed. The deleted scenes from both DVD's are great as well.

I don't consider Spinal Tap a Guest mockumentary since he didn't direct it, so I voted for Best in Show.

This is Spinal Tap. If just going with ones he directed, I'd give Best in Show a slight edge over Guffman.

Spinal Tap, but even though he co-stared and co-wrote it, I wouldn't call it a Guest movie.
Otherwise, I'd go with Guffman as the best movie Guest directed.

Spinal Tap is my favorite movie, but it is not a CG film. With that out of the way I now cast my vote for Guffman.

definitely guffman > best in show > mighty wind > for your consideration > spinal tap
there are some GREAT moments in guffman, especially during the play and how seriously the actors take themselves. i could watch and re-watch that movie over and over.

The baseball deleted scene in Waiting for Guffman is great.

Not a film, but Christopher Guest fans should try to track down the TV show The History of White People in America (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089277/), directed by Harry Shearer. It's in somewhat of the same vein as Guest's mockumentaries, and stars Fred Willard and Mary Kay Place. Absolutely hilarious and gloriously un-PC. Willard's rant at a black man during his marriage counseling session has to be heard/seen to be believed.

Wow... not a lot of love for A Mighty Wind. I love all of his films but that one struck me as special. I really thought it was the most emotionally satisfying of all his films.

I love A Mighty Wind. I imagine a lot of people in this thread do too, it's just up against some fierce competition.

Spinal Tap all the way.
It's just about flawless. Even the original music in it is great. The soundtrack is one of my favorite albums; the songs are both great rock and songs and hilarious.
