I tried to search for this, but I only found info on the Blue-Ray release of this. Is there any significant differences from the new Platinum Edition DVD's being release by Disney on DVD and the 2 Disc Special Edition that was released 5 years ago, or is it essentially the same? Was there a new transfer for the Platinum Edition?

I just saw Speedy's Best Buy ad and wondered the same. I didn't even know they were releasing a new version.

There's new extras, like a very good commentary and a 40 min making of. I thought the transfer looked a little cleaner, less EE than the older one, but not by much.

Aren't the sides of the frame opened up more? The commercial states it is presented for the first time as Disney intended and a screen comparison is shown with the new version definitely ummm...wider screen(?). LOL

Yes, the new transfer is wider. Really wide. The old one is 2.35:1 (I measured it to 2.31:1) while the new one is stated as 2.55:1 (actual measured ratio 2:54:1).

Looking forward to receiving my copy tomorrow I want to buy the Blu Ray release too , for when I buy a Blu Ray player , and cannot wait for Pinocchio in March and
Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs next October (2009). I wonder what the extras will be like on those two releases?

I also want to pick up a Blu-Ray copy for when I do get a BR player down the road.....not that I think it will actually go OOP anytime soon, unless they do the Disney Vault with Blu-Ray's as well.

Just in case some don't know, the Blu-ray release of this actually includes a bonus SD-DVD copy of the film on a third disc.

Thanks for the screenshots. I didn't realize the new edition was a "wider" widescreen edition. Is this the correct OAR for the movie? I thought 2.35 was the correct OAR. At least that's what UltimateDisney said in their review of the original Special Edition:

"it’s original widescreen aspect ratio of 2.35:1, enhanced for 16x9 widescreen televisions; "

New Audio Commentary, but left out the old commentary featuring the original animators and Mary Costa, the voice of Aurora? A crime....

Keeping my old disc. I don't see it as a reson to upgrade.

I just got my copy today , and the film looks great , I'm so glad I bought the new Platinum Edition , and I'm thinking of buying the Blu Ray disc as my first Blu Ray disc too , as I'd love to see it in real Hi Definition , but I do need to buy a Blu Ray player too!

Do any other UK based DVD Talk forum readers know which player to recommend?

I think I'll take a look at the selection at Richer Sounds , as they usually sell already chipped Multi Region players!

Probably a REAL dumb question....but I wanted to ask anyways....but a buddy of mine at work said you'll be able to send Disney your SD DVD and be able to get the Blu-Ray counterpart in return for a fee too I'm sure.....any truth to this, sorry if it sounds stupid!

It's true.

It's more like buy the New Sleeping Beauty and mail back an old Disney DVD and receive a $10 check.

Did you have the special edition as well? I'm trying to see if its worth double dipping since I already have the special edition.

a question: for those who got the BD copy w/ the 3rd disc SD copy... is the 3rd disc basically just Disc 1 from the SD version? or does it seem like a completely made-only-to-package with BD 3rd disc.

The DVDtalk review (http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/34969/sleeping-beauty/?___rd=1) does a great job of explaining the differences.

I poped the SD Copy into DVD Profiler last night and it said that it is Disk 1 Platinum Edition, it has a 2 music videos and 2 or 3 extras on it.

I dont' even have the original special edition release but I am sure interested in getting the Platinum Edition as it is 2.55:1 widescreen unlike the other that was only 2.35:1 and plus the sound and picture is updated/brighter and more better.

The Blu-ray comes with a dvd version of the movie. So you're covered.

Love that they give you the DVD as well. Studios should have started doing that from the start.

Remind me next time not to buy anything Disney that's NOT a Platinum Edition. I remember the documentary about how the 2003 DVD was an enhancement over the theatrical. I guess they can keep improving and improving it. I suppose the Golden Edition will be in a 3.00:1 super duper widescreen format and reanimated in 3-D. :P

No, I'm not bitter...
