View Full Version : My local gamestop are thieves!!! Stole money off my gift card. What should I do?

I am posting this here because I believe this forum is filled with the most mature people who can help me with this situation.

I took my edge card (basically a gift card with store credit) to my local gamestop. Later that day while the card was in my possession 3 purchases for 20, 70, and 70 dollars were made on my card. I made a purchase the next day and it was down by $160.96.

They are telling me to go back to the store and they need to do check their "logs" or something.

I don't want to do that because they can probably look up my address and do bad things to me.

I am in a bind and don't know what to do.

Should I contact the police???

Gamestop Customer service on the phone told me to go to another store and they can file a complaint with a department that I forgot the name to. They say I can't call them direct.

edited to add
I went to another gamestop in my area and the manager there called the district manager and explained what happened. While he was on the phone he agreed with the DM about something. When he hung up he said to me that he kind of figured what was going on but he couldn't tell me. He said they would get it fixed and the district manager would call me tomorrow.

I am sure he believes that it is some crooked employee doing something but doesn't want to mention it to me. We'll know more tomorrow.

Here is the latest.

The manager said he would immediately refund me one of the $70 purchases.

He said he needs to review the surveillance footage and register logs for the other 2 occurrences and as soon as he verifies what happened there he will refund the remaining $90. He said that should be a day or 2.

So that is the latest news in my saga.

Do you have your receipts?

Yes i have all the receipts from all the transactions i have made this past week. But who is to say they wont accuse me of "losing the receipts" for the purchases i "supposedly" did not make???

Michael Corvin

Can't they pull up your whole history on the card? They will see a break in dates between the last time you used the card and your recent 3 transactions.

vwbeetlvr

this all happened in one day between 9/26 and 9/27. I didn't say anything after I noticed it because There was $148.50 in credit that had not posted from a previous transaction and thought that was the discrepancy until I called gamestop today and they told me the whole scoop.

The logical answer is to go back to that Gamestop and ask em about it.

I'm not sucking up. I'm not going to post this on the X-Box forums or anything like that. Those are all immature fanboys.

What you need to do: gather all proofs that you did not use any of your gift card. Go to GameStop, ask for manager - do not say or discuss any of that with employee(s), just manager only.

If the manager refuse to help you, go to regional manager. You don't need to get police involved.

They are telling me to go back to the store
That's probably what you should do. If you didn't make the purchases, you need to be assertive and get them to correct their mistakes. If they can't resolve it to your satisfaction, then you would probably go through the main company's customer service department.

I don't want to do that because they can probably look up my address and do bad things to me.
Wow. That seems just a tad paranoid.

Go back to the store & talk to the manager. Makesure you had all the receipts with you. If things didn't work out. Go to local Gas Station buy 5 gallons gas & light that gamestop into dust, lol

Well.. he is in Jersey .

Then by now he should've gone all "Paully Walnuts" with a baseball bat on some Gamestop employee's head and thrown a trashcan into someone's IROC Z window in a blatant act of overreaction. -ohbfrank- He must be a California transplant.

But seriously, gather your reciepts and talk to a Manager.

Either it was a mistake, in which case, the manager can help you out, or it's deliberate on the part of a thieving employee, in which case, the manager should be made aware of this person so that he/she can be fired. If the manager isn't being helpful, ask for the phone number of the district manager.

What's proofs of non-purchases is he supposed to bring? I would think they could print out a transaction history against the card. That should explain a lot.

There are only 2 things that could possibly happen in your situation:

Lots of customers are dumb and do not know what they are buying or how the credit system works...I'll go against my usual judgment and assume you are not dumb and understand the credit system.

This leaves only 1 possibility. An employee used your number and bought stuff. This could only work if you were in that store at least once that day using the card though. When you left, he rang some stuff up.

There is no way to look up your card history in the store, only a call to customer service can tell you what was bought and when. The manager would then have to look at the tapes and see what happened around that time, assuming he was not the one stealing the credit.

Hope this helps...good luck.

Burn the place down. Or start wild rumors on stock forums that they're going out of business, then everyone will dump their stock, and will in fact go out of business.

makesure you take advantage tomrorow & get 1 or 2 games with extra $10 or $20 off. Told the manager you spent lot times & gas go back & forward cos they mistake .. they should give you discount on game for it ;)

Suprmallet

The manager probably won't authorize a discount, but the DM more than likely will.

I was a GameStop manager until today actually and will be more than happy to direct you however you want to go. This actually happens a lot and is always an employee stealing from you. They write down your card number and manually enter the code later and spend your money. What has to happen in order to restore the money is to contact the District Manager first. Any GameStop in your area can give you his/her number. Then contact corporate loss prevention, also available at any gamestop. They will look into the purchases on the card by the number, review footage, and give you your money back. However, I would keep calling them every day because GameStop sucks and will try to ignore you until you go away. If I can be of any assistance please let me know.
