A friend was arguing that Illinois is a more liberal state than California.

I seem to remember there was a list going around that was a ranking of where the states fell on the political spectrum. Not talking red/blue but overall liberal vs conservative.

anyone have a handy dandy link?

Not a state but Washington D.C.?

Vermont is the most liberal state, Utah is the most conservative:

If you go by CPVI, Utah is the most Republican, while Mass, NY, and Rhode Island are most Democrat.

They have obviously never heard of the Nolan Chart.

They have obviously never heard of the Nolan Chart. They started asking that question more than 20 years before the Nolan Chart existed. The whole point of the ANES studies are to have consistent wording to questions over time.

I've always argued that Minnesota is the most True Blue state, being that they have the longest running record of voting Democrat for President, thanks to Mondale. :)

Utah is the most conservativeWhat's funny is that there's Obama signs and bumper stickers everywhere. But hardly anything for McCain. Presumably because voting Republican is the "default" position.

I don't see any in GA. Of course, that could be because Obama poured money into the state and McCain didn't.

I don't see any signs for either Obama or McCain.

Most of the signs I see are for local elections.

And, a few for Sen. Inhofe. I want to tear them down.

As long as it's consistently inadequate, then OK!

I probably disagree 80% with Inhofe. But I think he is one of the most, if not the most, important senator(s) to re-elect.

Isn't there about a snowball's chance in global warming hell he won't be re-elected?

If I lived in OK, I might even break my 28 year boycott on voting. :)

How ironic, given that Utah is where polygamy is/was/secretly practiced.

3 things I do like about Inhoffe:

1. He supports a realistic & comprehensive energy plan.

2. He keeps (helps) military establishments in OK from closing.

3. He's a thorn in the side of Barbara Boxer.

I believe it would more interesting to have a thread ranking liberal-conservative of each of our members. I'm certain our moderators would not have any objections to that. :)

Having lived in Vermont, I don't think it is the most liberal. It has some whacky liberal tendencies for sure, but also has a weird maverick streak. Votes a lot on personality, and not so much on party.

Woo hoo! Walking around Bloomington, you'd think Indiana was in the heart of Obamistan, and that there isn't a single Conservative voter for miles and miles and miles. Nice to be reminded that Monroe County is a tiny little blue island in a solidly red state:

Monroe Co is the only blue county in all of Southern IN.

Yep. Bloomington = Indiana University. Big college in a town with barely twice the population of the school, plus a sparcely-populated county, and nowhere else for Libs to go for miles and miles and miles around.... kinda like Austin, only with bikes and basketballs.

When I attended the Univ. of Texas I didn't notice it being very liberal - considering I attended The Univ. of Calif. at Berkeley for one semester. Then it was called the 'little red school house.'

Coincidentally, the bluer the county (in Indiana and in most states), the more people live there.

If we ever go to a system where you get one vote for every acre you own, the Democrats are in trouble. Until then, maps like the one above don't really mean much.
