The first game starts in just three days. :)

Bad news for the Penguins: Gonchar out 4-6 months to recover from surgery to repair his dislocated shoulder. The Pens will be without their top two defensemen for a good part of the season.

http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/news?slug=txpenguinsgonchar&prov=st&type=lgns

Also interesting: Blackhawks waive Khabibulin.

RIP Reggie.
I don't think I like the first two games of the new season being played overseas. Kind of takes the impact of watching the first game of the season ( in North America ) away. I'm sitting there excited to watch the first game on tv and then I think to myself, wait I already have missed two games of the new seson. It doesn't sound right to me.
Go Flyers!

A TSN hockey analyst was talking about that and he basically said the same thing. He was talking about how Winnipeg kind of got screwed by only having an exhibition game and not getting a regular season game.

I got NHL Centre Ice this year.

I like Montreal. Komasarek is a beast. He's one of my favorite players.
They seemed to have gotten a bit tougher this season.
Alex Henry, Georges Laraque, Ryan Flinn although I don't think Flinn willbe in the NHL and I don't know about Henry. But they'll be there if needed, they should have a good, fun team to watch.

From what I've read of the preseason scouting reports, the Canadiens are a good team this year. It would be most appropriate for the Habs to win the Stanley Cup on the 100th anniversary of one of the most famous sports teams in the world. :)

!

I still have it somewhere on my old VHS tapes. Dave Brown coming out without a shirt beating up Chris Nilan. Ron Hextall trying to get on the ice, but being held back by Mike Keenan, cause he was the reason the Flyers went to the cup in '87. Chico Resch turning the next backwards so Claude Lemeiux couldn't shoot it into the empty net, great times!

As for this season, I have been to a couple of Flyers PreSeason games, and they look great with Richards the Captain now. If Gagne can come back from the concussion and be the 40 goal scorer he was before, you have to put the Flyers the favorite over the Pens in the East. But Gagne is a big IF!

Anyone know what the deal with online center ice is this year? I have done the regular television center ice in the past, but think i'm gonna do the online version this year. doesn't seem to be too much info on there site though. Guess it got renamed NHL Gamecenter Live, but they don't say how you can buy it or how much.

I watched most of Vancouver-Calgary last night. I thought it was a great game.
Canucks won 6-0. There was a lot of heavy hitting and the flow of the game was very fast. I'm impessed with Vancouver as they have added more toughness to their roster.
Dion Phaneuf is still amazing for Calgary. Very hard hitter. He knocked a few guy's on to their backs last night. Very Entertaining game. Saturday Night should be a barn burner as they go to Calgary for the rematch.

Maybe the NHL should've gotten a band who's even heard of the sport... or at least undertsand the basic concept that the base of a trophy usually goes at the bottom.

In Joe Elliott's defense, maybe Bettman taught him.

That's nuts. Their schedules were so jam packed that the NHL didn't have 30 seconds to talk to Def Leppard (Joe) about how to rest the Stanley Cup?

Yeah I think it was more of an artistic statement. Like "Hey...this is what Bettman thinks of the sport."

Nothing says hockey like Def Leppard. Great job marketing the league Bettman...keep up the good work. This is almost as good as when you had EA Sports remove fighting from NHL 94.

The Leafs are rebuilding... finally. Expect a lot more horrible games like that this season. In fact, they should get even worse as there are still way too many veterans on the team they need to dump.

They should seriously trade Toskala to a potential contender before his value drops. They can get a decent draft pick or a good young prospect for him.

MLSE has the luxury and freedom of being able to sellout every game and getting great television ratings despite having a horrible team. We learned this through the 80's and early 90's with 13 straight below .500 seasons, and it hasn't changed the last 3 seasons of missing the playoffs.

The main reason is 4 teams played 2 games last weekend in Europe, so their regular season started 5 days before anyone else. But for some reason, a couple teams didn't play their first game until Saturday (or today in the case of Edmonton) even though opening night was technically last Thursday.

I was pretty pleased with the Isles peformance last night. Never thought I'd see a 4 goal period by them this season. The coaching and system change looks to have already gotten these guys out of that trap mentality. They might not be good this season but they won't be boring to watch.

yeah, but the problem is he'll only do that about 5-7 more times for the rest of the year. No one wants to fight him anymore...Which is why he was let go here. I like Georges, he's a real nice guy (met him last year), but he's dominated so long that he's almost untouchable. Sure, Brashear will throw down with him, but there's only a few guys left that will, and the majority of the 'tough guys' that are smaller won't bother going near him or just ignore him. And in my opinion, because of that, he's not much more than a deterrent to most shots at the top players, but less so than some other guys like, say, Godard. A guy like Scott Hartnell (or "Fartsmell" as one fan had a jersey this weekend that said that) who will drop, won't drop with Laraque, would be more likely to go with Godard. Georges may have fought himself out of vogue...

I can pretty much guarantee that Godard is going to ask him to go when the Pens and Habs play for the first time on 12-27, just so he can stand up to the ol' pens tough guy.

I'm LOVING it, especially all the double feeds (home and away teams). This means I should get to see most of the Pens games, if not all.

(Between the new minor league hockey team/my season tix and not getting to see Pens' games because I was deemed TOO CLOSE to Pittsburgh, it was a no-brainer to give it up.)

Not sure officially their stance. I'm sure publicly they frown upon it because they are trying to get the newer, faster, skills-driven league image going, but they know it is part of the game that will hopefully never leave since it's such a great part of the tradition of the game not to mention the appeal it has for some fans, obviously myself included.

The Flyers offically......suck right now. They play no defense, their forwards don't backcheck, and the goalies right now are letting in soft goals. The Flyers are usually hush-hush about any rumors, but has anyone heard through the grapevine that Stevens could be gone if the Flyers don't started winning. (literaly):)

I 've never liked their stance on fighting ever since Bettman came in.
If they can just leave things alone how they are now, I can accept that and go with it. But in this league they make changes to something every year now to try to bring in more fans which equals more money. But they have to realize, at some point, that the game will never be anything more than what it is now and hopefully finally leave things alone and just go with it.
But when and if these bonehead front office people can realize this, I have no idea.

I don't see Stevens going anywhere unless things get really, really bad.
John is their golden boy that they have groomed and brought up through their system. However a few trades could happen and I would look for that first. But if things stay bad for a long time ( a few months ) anything could happen. They have Mchllargey there as an assistant who could step right in and has head coaching experience if something were to happen there.
But I would look for a trade or two first and if that still doesn't work, the sky is the limit.

Also, Palin says if she and husband Todd had had a sixth child, they have already picked a name for a boy joining siblings Track, Bristol, Willow, Piper and Trig.

The Habs have be doing great with 11 out of 12 points, only losing in a SO against the Sabres. Lang and Tanguay have added depth, and big George some muscle. They have a solid top 3 D (Markov, Komisarek, Hamrlich), both Price and Halak have been solid and Kovalev/Plekanec/Kostytsyn haven't even gotten started yet. It's a long season but I like this team. :)

It's pretty common. Boston and Nashville only drew 12,000 last night and the Islanders only drew 10,000 even though they had a "buy one, get one free" promotion. Columbus and NJ both had 12,000 a few nights back. It's sad that these numbers are actually boosted to hide the real attendance.

A handful of US teams were financially unstable in the best of economic times. With the economic meltdown kicking in, I have to believe these teams are on the verge of failing - while a few more are probably now deemed unstable.

Not long ago many were asking if Canada would ever receive another NHL franchise, now many are wondering how many.

Legace hurt and Blues lose 4 - 0

Legace hurt on Palin carpet

ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Blues lost a game and may also have lost a goalie for an extended period of time.

Dustin Brown's goal and assist and Jason LaBarbera stopped 15 shots for his third career shutout in the Los Angeles Kings' 4-0 victory over the Blues on Friday night.

Before the game, Blues goalie Manny Legace tripped on a carpet laid out for Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin to drop the ceremonial first puck.

"I went to go step on the ice and the (Scottrade Center security) guy goes, 'Watch the carpet,' and he had his foot there holding it, so I figured it would be safe to step on," Legace said. "If he's holding it and I figured the other end's pretty much secure, I was just worrying about the carpet slipping (forward). As soon as I went to step down, he took his foot off the carpet. As soon as I stepped on the carpet, the carpet just shot out and my leg kept going and my other one was still on the bench. I felt it pull right away."

Legace played the first period but the left hip flexor injury obviously affected his play. He gave up two goals on 12 shots and was replaced by St. Louis native Ben Bishop at the start of the second period.

As for the hit on Sutter by Weight, textbook. If Weight doesn't lean over he hits him with an elbow to the head which is even worse.

And I'm tired of hearing and seeing how everyone needs to be held "accountable" for a good clean hit. It's popping up more and more and it's not a good thing. Tell your teammate to keep his head up instead.

True, there aren't enough devil's fans at any given game for that to happen anyways...

As for the Weight hit, I have to agree. Carolina's Rutherford made some pretty strong comments on TSN to Bob McKenzie about it, and while I feel bad for Sutter, you have to keep your head up. Rutherford whined about the NHL not doing enough about hits to the head. It's not like Weight was literally going for his head, as he's not that type of player. Sutter was leaning, weight braced himself by dropping in for the blow, and there you have it. It's not pretty, but it's not dirty. Notice you don't see Sidney Crosby get rocked like that, and he was younger than Sutter when he was a rookie. While I don't think Weight was trying to hurt him, I do think he could have pulled up a bit. Now whether or not that would have been worse because of an awkward collision, I don't know.

I had somebody tell me the same thing today, "oh he should've let up." My response was; if he lets up like you said that could be a real nasty collision; if he lets up and Sutter somehow gets around him it's a 2 on 1 or breakway. It's the NHL, guys shouldn't be letting up on hits like that IMO. If Sutter was facing the glass and Weight saw numbers then yeah, he should let up. As you said, it's the player's responsibility to be aware and have his head up. I remember Witt caught Crosby in open ice, but Crosby was aware the hit was coming and didn't put himself in a position to get hurt. Some players just adjust faster to the speed of the NHL. Hopefully Sutter recovers quickly, he's a good player.

Brandon Sutter's injury has dad talking about revenge

Brandon Sutter's injury has dad talking about revenge

Brent Sutter was speaking as a father, a coach and a longtime hockey man Monday in discussing his son, Brandon. Brent Sutter is coach of the New Jersey Devils. He played in the NHL for many years and said he suffered eight or nine concussions in his career.

But Sutter said what happened to Brandon Sutter on Saturday night in the Carolina Hurricanes' game against the New York Islanders -- Brandon being leveled by the Islanders' Doug Weight and suffering a concussion -- shouldn't be a part of the game today.

"It was a hard hit, a legal hit ... but something has to be done about players being hit in the head while in a vulnerable position."

Sutter said that when he played, such a hit would lead to repercussions. "I'm not talking about suspensions or penalties, either," Brent Sutter said. "If a player got hit in the head, whether it was clean or dirty, you knew what was going to happen. It was going to be a long night for the guy who did the hitting. And the next time, it would be a long night.

"People may say I'm old-school," Brent Sutter said. "The game today is better in a lot of areas. But in some areas, it's not and it's troublesome. There is a lack of respect for opponents' players. It's the way the game is played today, and there are significant injuries. It is what it is."

Brent is 100% wrong IMO. If you skate with your head down in the NHL expect to have a short career.

I agree with him on this part though...

Guys like Tootoo, Kaleta, Hollweg, etc running around like idiots intentionally leaving their feet, hitting from behind, and going for high hits and trying to hurt guys is what needs to be taken out of the game. I honestly woudn't even care if they had their knees taken out.

I agree with you on that. But Sutter's reaction is totally off the mark. It was a clean play and I don't think there was any intention to cause injury. Leaving your feet to check and hitting from behind into the glass should be automatic 5 minute majors.

I agree with Brent. So what if it was a legal hit. When your team mate gets stung like that, even with a legal hit, you have to stick up for your team mate. Some people think just because it's a legal hit everything should be ok, I don't think so. I applaud Brent for saying what he thinks. Most of the time you can't even do that now.

All things considered, though, I think they are doing reasonably well. How many teams can lose one of the best defensive pairings in the NHL in Gonchar/Whitney and still be 7-4-2? Not saying they can't improve, but I also don't think the Pens need to hit the panic button yet or trade anyone away just yet.

And this makes me smile: Satan with 8 goals and 12 points at $3.5 million vs. Hossa with 6 goals and 15 points at $7.45 million.

Dr_Evil

Satan has worked out quite well so far. He started a little slow but has been really producing lately. I think Hossa brings more of a total game than Satan, but at those salary numbers, Satan is the way the Pens have to go.

I think this team will be really solid once Gonchar comes back. Really wish Staal would regain that scoring touch of his rookie year. That is looking more and more like a fluke.

Good call Sun. I didn't mean to imply that we shouldn't be impressed/happy that the Pens are still so good. They still do need some help, though, either internally or from an acquisition, as Gonch and Whitney aren't due back for some time. I guess as long as they can keep winning more than they're losing and get those guys back in time for the postseason push, then a move isn't absolutely necessary (especially if it comes at the cost of the future of this team).

And that Satan bargain after the snub by Hossa sure is a wonderful thing to behold! If Miro keeps it up, while his all-around game isn't as good as Hossa's, it could end up being a bigger coup that Hossa's defection to the Motor City.

I can't really fault their effort at all tonight. No DiPietro, Witt, Martinek, Sillinger, or Meyer and they still manage to hustle and pot some goals. Tonight's game was just an example of skill beating will. MacDonald continues to keep them in games and that's all you can really ask of a backup. That was a ridiculous tip from Kennedy for the tying goal.

Luongo is on quite the roll. A shutout in better than one out of every three starts? lol That's ridiculous! (Glad Nabby's injury isn't as bad as thought, but it would have been interesting to see Boucher have to be the starter and if his little streak (2 SOs in 3 games) was real or not.)

Actually, other than that 2 goal/27 second outburst, with the play coming from behind the net on both, the 3rd goal was a PP goal and then an empty netter, it wasn't a bad effort. And he stood on his head late in the 3rd to try to keep the Sharks in it.

Wow! Look at the Pens bring it back to within 1. Crazy!

It looks like this one's going down to the wire.

**edit

Wow! What a weak goal. It wasn't even a "should've had". It was a "had a piece of". :(

**edit 2

Holy crap! Jordan Staal picked up the Pens and singlehandedly took them to the overtime win!

That last play was just an incredible individual effort!

That was an insane game. Staal was playing out of his mind tonight. Looks like all it took was me calling him out for him to step his game up. Huge win for the Pens playing with 5 defenseman most of the game.

Do you mind calling his brother out before the Canes' game against the Capitals tonight? He needs something to wake him up! ;)

Great effort by Jordan and the Pens to pull that one out.

What a great hockey game last night in Detroit. Even the Sportscenter guys joked when it was the 2nd lead story last night, "This was such a great game, we are going to show Hockey highlights in the first 5 minutes of the show!"

Sharks put up 57 shots against the Predators, but can only manage 3 goals. First loss at home.

Dan Boyle missed the game because his wife gave birth earlier in the day. Therefore, I place the blame of this loss squarely on her vagina.

That line of Ovechkin-Backstrom-Semin was deadly last night. 12 points and a +12.

They are a great line no doubt, but it had more to do with who they were playing :helpme:

I can't disagree with that. Staal just seems to be off early on.

Wow Semin with 27 pts in 15 games thus far. I wish Crosby would start picking it up. He usually starts gaining steam around January or so.

Sharks get back on winning track with 6-1 win over Flames. The 1st period was about as good as I've seen the Sharks play all year.

Also set a franchise record with 9 points from the blue line.

Multi-goal leads don't seem to mean much to the Pens this season, both for and against.

Isles beat a reeling Senators team last night. Nice to see them get a win. Don't know what the hell Pock was thinking with that elbow though. He'll have 5 games up in the pressbox to feel shame.

In the "that didn't take long" department, Barry Melrose was fired.

^Tampa is challenging the Isles and Thrashers for worst management in the league right now. Melrose was an awful choice from the start.

Pretty much everyone (save Koules and Barrie) could see that Tampa Bay was assembling a disaster this offseason. No surprise Melrose is out of there.

Nice choice in Rick Tocchet to take over on an interim basis, fresh off of his two year league ban for gambling.

Lol @ Tocchet. (That said, I'd like to see him succeed, him being a former Cup-era Pen and all.)

Melrose was out of the league for so long, he's a bit out of touch, I'm sure. Though, he had a solid staff behind him. However, these new owners and the management didn't help Melrose at all.

Look at all the money they spent in the offseason vs. how said money is currently performing. Between that and Barry's rustiness (not to mention that he probably upset the "wrong" people with his comments after the European tour), it was pretty much inevitable. Folks sure are quick to pull the trigger, though. (Obviously not as bad as the Savard incident, but 16 games isn't that long either.)

Pittsburgh sent Sydor to Dallas for Boucher. I don't really understand the trade on the Pens' side with the contracts being the same, but who knows....

Scary collision between Arnott and Pavelski left Arnott motionless on the ice for a few minutes. Hopefully it turns out to be nothing serious.

The Rangers left Lundqvist out to dry last night. He basically pulled himself after the 5th goal by Demitra. Apparently he looked at Renney and the coach gave him a nod to take himself out.
