Everyone picks the Cubs except 1. Still, I think the Dodgers have a good chance for an upset with Lowe, Billingsley, and Manny.

The Dodgers have the best pitching in the NL and a pretty good offense since Manny joined them.

Even though the Cubs do have the better record I certainly would not consider it an upset if the Dodgers win this series.

You know, I was Wrigleyville the other day -- nice place. If only Cubs fans weren't so awful to other teams....

Either way, I say the Cubbies take this series pretty easily. Then lose to the Brew Crew, who fall to the Halos in the WS.

And when the Cubs played the Dodgers earlier this year the Dodgers were not at full strength. Dempster has pitched excellent this past season ,but he's due for a bad outing. And their is a lot of pressure on him. He said the Cubs are going to the World Series at the start of the season.
I pick Dodgers in 4.

4 would not be bad but not as good a 3.

That's funny I need the Dodgers to win because this guy i know in the Midwest is having this huge party and invited like 30 friends over and there would be nothing better in my eyes to have the Dodgers spoil the party for him and his friends. that would be a great housewarming party.

All and All i just hope the dodgers don't go 3 and out like they have in every other playoff series since 88(except for their 1 win in 04).

Why the heck didn't the Cubs pitch Zambrano in game 1? You gotta go with your ace. Zambrano is your ace and even pitched a no-hitter recently. That's why Lowe is starting and not Billingsly, even though Bills had a better season.

And...when your starter can't throw strikes, you make him throw down the middle 5 or 6 straight times to the other teams leading run producer after he's thrown 100 pitches?

Cubs deserved what they got in game 1.

My what a difference a foul tip makes...Loney ticking that last swing was the difference. He doesn't tick that ball, he's out on strikes, and it's a whole different game. His grand slam took all the wind out of the Cubs sails last night.

Just to let it be known, I said (not on these boards) the Cubs would lose game one due to winning the division too long ago. They will rebound tonight with Big Z, and take the series in 5.

OTOH, Ethier doesn't swing at at awful pitch with the bases loaded earlier in the game and the wind could have been taken out much earlier. Can't walk 8 guys and expect to get away with it.

What is so wrong with saying the Cubs are more pathetic than the Phils? Sure, the Phils have over 10,000 losses. Sure the Phils rarely go to the post season and have only won a single World Series in over 100 years of history. But we won one. :)

You get booed in your home field, how are you supposed to feel? How about cheering them on so that they regain some confidence and try to give you more to cheer about? Cubs fans need to relax and try to have some fun. I didn't see too many people enjoying themselves at Wrigley. There is always next year.

Now that Im off my rant if they can somehow win game 3 they might get some momentum. They have Harden going Saturday and Lily Sunday if they win. I have more confidence in them then Z and Dempster.

I dont think they should re sign demspter this off season go after CC and throw all their money his way.
You left off one very important name.
Cub GM Jim Hendry who put this high priced team together and just gave Lou a contract extention without waiting to see how he manages in the playoffs.

[QUOTE=Aphex Twin;8981477]You get booed in your home field, how are you supposed to feel? How about cheering them on so that they regain some confidence and try to give you more to cheer about? Cubs fans need to relax and try to have some fun. I didn't see too many people enjoying themselves at Wrigley. There is always next year.

Yes!, next year with new ownership.
And hopefully will fire Jim Hendry.

YOur lame and for once I hate to say it but lopez was right the fans should be booing this sorry ass team. With the fielding errors and not being able to score runs BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO You Cubssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss
Here's the thing here in Chicago.
Up until 2003 the Cub fans would cheer no matter what.
I remember a year not too long ago the Cubs had a bad year and it was the last game of the year and the fans are cheering the last out of the game like it ment something. After 2003 when national t.v. showed Cub fans crying on t.v. and then the White Sox won the World Series the Cub fans stood up and started booing Cub players. Like even today there is this hatered for Dusty Baker. On Dusty's 1st trip to Wrigley Cub Gm Jim Hendry said that the Cub fans would give him a warm welcome. They didn't! They booed the crap out of him. Cub fans have been the butt of a lot of jokes in the past , but no more. I have mentioned this and posted newspaper articals to educate some of you. Cub fans are no longer the same kool-aid Cub fans of the past.
This year in Chicago we have had cub fans arrested for beating up a Sox fan and killing another Cub fan.

No, not really living in the past. Just pointing out the obvious, which you've been unable to grasp. I love how the Dodgers have one year of slightly above mediocre baseball and you come out and think this is like cause for celebration. You still have a fuckton of dead weight on your team (Schmidt, Jones, Pierre) and are going to be paying for it for a while. Enjoy the ever so brief taste of the postseason.

yes stupid. i bring up past Dbacks success. You say don't live in the past. Then someone brings up Dodger vs. Giants championships, i point out the similarities, and you say the Giants haven't won one in xxx amount of years. That's pure comedy right there.

IMO What is stupid is that deftones compares how many WS the giants have won but fails to mention that the last one the giants have won was over 54 years ago. Instead of saying "yeah the dodgers got us this year. They were the better team. The dbacks will get em next year". The first thing he said was well in the past 10 years we have done this, this, and this blah, blah, blah. Which is pathetic and kind of a cop out.

IMO if you talk shit all year. Which is your god given right. (And i do it also.) That's just being a fan. Atleast be able to take a little ribbing like a man and dont be a fucking little bitch about it and say how well you have done in the past.

In baseball statistics, a quality start is awarded to a starting pitcher who completes at least six innings and permits no more than three earned runs.

Quit feeding Lopez. Guy hates the Cubs and loves to grasp at straws to cut any aspect of the franchise down. I will say, though...

Or his street sissy hop before he catches the ball?

It's been said many times the hop forces him to concentrate. He was missing a lot of flyballs when he converted to the outfield and adding the hop improved his focus. It's silly, but whatever works. He's not doing it to show off. I figured you, the guy who loves to bring all us peons the happenings from Chicago, would have heard that already.

I think the problem with the Cubs comes down to this: they have the wrong manager.

Lou Piniella's "wound up" personality just didn't cut it this season or last season when everything was on the line. As such, the team played really "tight" and that resulted in sub-par performances in the playoffs.

Compare this with Terry Francona and Ozzie Guillèn, two managers that got their teams to win the World Series after many decades of futility. Franconca did it with his calm demeanor (very necessary to deal with the enormous psychological baggage of the "Curse of the Bambino") and Guillèn did it by just being oblivious to whatever curse there was on the White Sox.

In short, the Cubs need a manager that either can deal with overcoming the teams' penchant of losing or just be oblivious to the whole curse thing in the first place.

I just wanted to come in say, who didn't see this coming?

I was astounded by the number of analysts calling for a Cubs Vs Red Sox WS. Sure in your dreams or a Disney movie that sounds great, but it takes two teams that no how to get the job done to setup that matchup. Everybody knows the cubs feel such relief just making the playoffs, that they think they will automatically win as soon as they realize they're in Oct baseball - forgetting you have to win there too..

I actually am starting to feel bad for my friends who are cubs fans, because they get fooled into thinking this is the year, year after year. My one friend in Chicago told me they even built a sign or something saying as much this year..

Unreal.

I would love to see a Dodgers Vs Sox series. Imagine Manny gets a ring either way, plus a playoff share from each team. That would be unheard of I have to imagine.

I forget how that works, does the team vote on who to give rings/shares too, or is it automatic based on games played or something?

I may be alone in this evaluation, but I thought the Cubs played very well in the series against the Dodgers.

Since 1985, when the Quality Start statistic was invented?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quality_start

that's a 4.50 era! and that's quality.

didn't they give him a contract ex. just as the playoffs started?

Remember that we're in an era where many starters would be lucky to pitch six complete, so it's a much more telling stat today than it was twenty years ago.

It's not the eighties, the seventies, and certainly not the sixties anymore.

Sure, a 4.50 ERA is not so great over the course of a season. But it keeps a team in a game and gives them a chance to win. And it's a maximum number of runs and a minimum number of innings. Anything better is also a quality start. I think it's a reasonable statistic.

Why is it that we don't see the 'Bob Gibson type' of ERAs anymore?

I'd be happy to see the Red Sox go home next. It is time for some new blood and the fans in Boston don't really need anything else to go crazy about. They were spoiled a few years ago.

Yes, you are alone.

BA .246
OPS .650

ERA 6.00
BAA .270

Errors 5

You're right. So to say that they played "very well" is about as far off as you can be with baseball analysis.

I feel bad for Cubs fans. I imagine they feel like I felt after 2003 ALCS. Their fans have had a laid back reputation, but I think that's a thing of the past. They are desperate for a win.

I feel bad for Cubs fans too. I was explaining to my girlfriend last night about baseball since she doesn't know a lick about the game, and how the Dodgers haven't won the WS in 20 years and then mentioned that the Cubs haven't won in 100. She said the Dodgers should just let the Cubs win

I see some of our members fail to detect when someone is obviously being facetious.

They'd fit right in the politics forum. ;)

Lou's a tight manager? Really? Have you paid attention the last two years or are you basing everything you "know" about him on his work in Cincy and Seattle? He had that blow-up last year, but outside of that, hasn't had any incidents or any post-game melt downs.

I read that the ring is automatic, the share is voted on by the team.

However in the past, in '04 they gave Nomar a .5 share. You would think the same would hold true with Manny.

Either way, he would be a lock for the ring - maybe that would work to the red sox's advantage ha

For 2 days the media have been saying Zambrano pitched a good playoff game.
When did giving up 3 runs in 6 innings a good outing in baseball?
That kind of E.R.A. is not good.
And it's crap b.s. stuff like that I point out and pisses people off.

Actually the standards for a good outing by a starting pitcher has really gone down. That is a tirade that Starman and I have to hear very often around here since Blyleven brings it up like every other game

Why is it that we don't see the 'Bob Gibson type' of ERAs anymore?

Other than his insane 1968 season (1.12), most of the time his ERA was right around 3.00, give or take. There are still guys who can pitch full seasons and repeatedly get mid-2 ERAs (Santana), but in general, pitchers don't pitch nearly as many innings per start, or innings per season: Gibson averaged over 260 innings/season, wihle Santana averages around 212.

If you have a great pitcher, let him pitch more innings, and his ERA will go down-- but throw in today's pitch counts and relief "specialists," and they just don't get that chance.

You do remember 2001 season, when the Mariners had over 110 wins in the regular season and still lost to the Yankees in the AL Championship Series? That was a Piniella-managed team, a team loaded with a lot a great players.

This failure demonstrates that the Cubs need the type of manager I suggested.

If anybody caught Monday's PTI I agree with everything Micheal Wilbon said about the Cubs except the part on Jim Hendry doing a great job.

I just got my internet back up and running again last night so I thought I would just come in and congratulate the Dodgers on their win.

As for the Cubs it was disappointing to see them play so poorly and give away runs the way they did in the series.

They have a lot of issues to address in the off season so it should be interesting to see the moves they make.

Anybody hear Vin Scully's play by play as the Dodgers won the 3rd game?
It was so beautiful the way his voice and words came together.
A Hollywood movie writer couldn't not have written this stuff as good.
This guy is a true baseball gem.
