TEAMS TIME (ET) NAT TV PITCHERS
Detroit at Chicago Sox 2:05 PM ESPN2 Garcia vs Floyd
The ChiSox are playing to stay alive and Detroit is playing to avoid last place in the division. (Actually they will be in last no matter what, but they can be in a tie for 4th with KC with a win or be in 5th all by themselves.)
Welcome home Freddy! Go Tigers!

I read Floyd is 0-1 with a 7.58 ERA in three starts on short rest this season. Sox lost all 3 games.
This will be the biggest game of his career to date. We'll see how he handles it.
I dragged my butt into work at 6am so I can get home in time to watch the second half of the game.

gotta wonder if the tigers are really into this game though
their season could have been (and probably should have been) over yesterday and they have nothing left to play for

Yeah, but you know they're probably pissed off they didn't get to go home yesterday and now have to fly to Chicago to make up today's game. I'm guessing they'd love nothing more than to send the White Sox home too.

I like to believe that teams that have nothing to play for still enjoy playing spoiler. Like the Florida Marlins have done for the past 2 years.

The Tigers have been a joke all year. Now they're forced to work on the first day of a vacation they've been eyeing since early June.
The Tigers aren't going to win this game. It'll be Twins/White Sox tomorrow in Chigaco.

So what happens if this gets rained out? Double header against two different teams tomorrow?
Raining pretty good here right now....

That ALDS series isn't supposed to start until Thursday so I assume they'd play this 162nd game tomorrow afternoon and the 1-game playoff (if necessary) early Wednesday afternoon (or even late morning CT) so TBS could squeeze it in prior to their 3 LDS games.

Sox really did this to themselves by losing 5 of the last 6 and not winning a single game in Minnesota.

Freddy Garcia - even if healthy is like the opposite of javier vazquez - a big game pitcher who doesn't focus in meaningless games. Looks like in the most meanigless of games for the Tigers, he's coming through so far.
I wonder if Ozzie and Freddy talked before the game and what they talked about.

Well nice to the Sox jump out to an early 1-0 lead but with two guys on and no outs they should have done more damage.

Yeah, I was a little nervous. Luckily the Sox remembered they can't do things the easy way.

Looks the like the Tigers either forgot the fundamentals of pitch and catch or the Twins didn't send them a nice post-game catered spread. ;)

wow, linebrink looks sharp. After his shit appearance on saturday, this looks promising.
I left work with the Tigers up 2-1 and flip on the radio at home to hear the grand slam call. Too bad Freddy got hurt, he was looking good.
Oh well, I suppose it should be decided between the two teams. I really hope the Twins win, the locals are already whining about how unfair it is to have the playoff game decided by a coin toss, and I don't want to deal with more of that. Oh, and I'd also just like my team to be playing in October ;)
I'd feel much better if Blackburn wasn't on the mound. Tomorrow is the perfect time for Morneau to remember how to hit.

It better be a packed house tomorrow.

So what is the One Game Playoff procedure? Is the one game playoff always played in the event of a tie? I thought it was better record against opposing team, in which case it would go to the Twins who won 10 of the 18. I guess now they just go to the one game playoff, which I think is unfair to the teams but a lot more exciting to the fans. I also think if that is the case then home field shouldn't be awarded by coin toss but to the team with the better record against the opposing team.
Or am I way off here with something?

They've always gone with a playoff, at least for a long time. I'm with Greenie on ESPN, in that I think it makes more sense to just award the division to whoever had the best record head to head (which is what they do if they end up tied, but one qualifies for the WC), but playoff games are fun, so keep them.

I think the playoff game is appropriate when one isn't eligible for the wild card. But I tend to agree the home field should be determined by record.
Not that I'm unhappy it's at The Cell.

I wonder if it's the travel arrangements excuse that they use for the world series that prevents them from doing that - that there isn't enough time to prepare the arrangements.

That's what they were saying on Mike and Mike this morning. (actually, more about being able to sell tickets, but I imaging any team would be able to sell out a play-in game one short notice)

Stone signed a contract a few weeks ago that puts him in the TV booth a few years past Hawk's current contract.
And I am so looking forward to that. Stone won't put up with Hawk's ramblings. The six games they did together (in 2007 I believe) were fantastic.

Definitely agreed. I remember DJ doing a FOX (or ESPN) game or two a few years ago, with a more suitable partner, and the difference was quite notable and for the better.
I doubt he will end up on the radio broadcast. I'd imagine he's got higher aspirations after putting in his time with an increasingly loopy Hawk.

Looks like this title might have been decided weeks ago behind closed doors. The home team in this series: 15-3.
